D.C. United News & Notes

*South African Tiyi Shipalane, a midfielder-forward from USL-2 club Harrisburg, is expected to begin his loan to D.C. United on Tuesday, a roster addition that will necessitate a personnel move (trade, waiver, transfer, injury list?).

*Liberian Adam Smarte is continuing his trial this week. He was an attacker who played right back for the PDL's Ventura County this year.

*United's Champions League match Wednesday against Mexican club Toluca at RFK Stadium will be shown live on Fox Soccer Channel and Telefutura. Kickoff is 8 p.m.

Any word on D. Szetela?

Posted by: TheWashDipsSince88 | August 24, 2009 1:35 PM | Report abuse

Let's see, blew off the DCU/Galaxy game to go see Alice In Chains and Tool in concert. See the game ended in a tie, see DCU is still on the outside of the playoffs looking in, still see Swine Flu Tommy Boy is the coach.

Yeah definitely better seeing Alice In Chains and Tool than watching DCU on Saturday.

@ Goff

What's the dillio w/ Szetela? I can understand if you know what happened and can't tell us or even that you don't know but good-googa-mooga. How long can this go on like this?

Is the offence soooo bad that he needs to go? How long is he going to suck up a roster spot and not even dress?

Any thing you can tell us?

Posted by: 9Nine9 | August 24, 2009 1:50 PM | Report abuse

Adam Smarte? Was he with San Jose briefly last season? If so, he looked pretty good in a preseason game against Houston at Kezar Stadium I went to.

If I knew any of specifics concerning Szetela, I would share them with y'all. I don't. Sorry. We'll see if he is in uniform Wednesday.

@OWNTF

yeah, she had a pretty good run there at the end. undefeated as the coach, right? i'd vote for her.

she definitely created a career for herself beyond her playing days. it's just too bad a team from Joisey (with a ridiculous name and bad uniforms) got to hoist the first championship trophy.

Get rid of Janicki and John - sign Smarte and Shipalane

Sign Ochocinco.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/peter_king/08/23/mmqb/2.html

Talked to Ochocinco on Sunday night (how weird it is to write "talked to Ochocinco"?), and he said he played soccer from 4 to 14 growing up in Miami. "Soccer's my first love,'' he said. "I only gave it up my freshman year in high school because it was time to get serious about football as a career.''

Hey steve, what are your thoughts on World Soccer Daily/Steven Cohen calling it quits.

Posted by: adecool79 | August 24, 2009 3:24 PM | Report abuse

Will Shipalane be allowed to play in CCL games, or only league ones? (Like UEFA where you have to submit a roster for the UCL, which was why Jozy couldn't play in any Villareal UCL games)

Steve the Pirate?

Who cares about WSD? Bigsoccer? I had never heard of it until the Hillsborough comment.

Pretty interesting seeing live EPL on ESPN2 on a Monday afternoon. It sure beats FSN replays on Comcast. Even without a cable box I'm still getting a little fix.:-)

My daughter woke from her nap and noticed soccer was on the tv. I asked her if she liked the Red team or the White team. She paused for a second, and then she said,"I like the Black team." :-)

strikers*

I don't think that I see United cutting Greg Janicki just because of one awful performance. Other than the Marathon match, he hasn't been THAT bad.

If I understand correctly, N'Silu was placed on the disabled list on 8/14, which means that he must miss at least 6 league games, but which freed up a roster spot for Habarugira. Perhaps DCU should do the same thing with Khumalo to make room for Shipalane? They play essentially the same position.

That Toluca match may be an absolute blood-letting.

Liverpool and Villa on ESPN--Halftime. 2-0, Villa!! Great game by Villa so far, Liverpool looks very frustrated.

I think Reina's outburst shows how frustrated they are. It looked like a corner to me.

re:Dont forget to add Moreno as Stirkers coach.

Wait-- we've got strikers on this squad? As in plural? Funny, I haven't noticed them lately.

Aston Villa is actually playing for a win, not a draw. L'pool seems to be playing for the whistle.

Funny comment about Villa's new Greek signing "He'll get to know the referees quickly."

Kenny Cooper scored in a losing cause.

I don't mind watching live EPL football with the former US keeper playing on a Monday afternoon but I will sorely miss today's edition of the Worlds Strongest Man competition.

Friedel looks great but was out of place on the Lullpool goal.

@ Arswift
Don't see Eric Wasshisname in 18.

I use Sporting Life, Live Center then Matchday Live while watching. You don't need the Live Center but they give you tables from the major European leagues.

Toluca looked very good at home to Santos yesterday afternoon on Telemundo. They were completely dominant and up 2-0 within about 20 minutes. Sinha (a better roving attacking mid/withdrawn forward than Blanco but not Aguirre's favorite), Nestor Calderon and Carlos Esquivel are meshing well and shooting with accuracy. D-mid Israel Lopez also has a good outside shot and is dangerous on their freekicks.

Toluca played 10 of the 11 startes they had used midweek in their CCL roadgame at T&T. So maybe they will start to get fatigued or the coach will choose to rotate in some more subs on Wednesday night.

Their coach is Chepo de la Torre, who I'm pretty sure coached against DC United when he was with Guadalajara. Like most good Mexican coaches he's been fired by Chivas owner Jorge Vergara.

Alice In Chains and Tool? What'd you do, set your time machine to 1991?

Posted by: edgeonyou | August 24, 2009 6:39 PM | Report abuse

I swear to God, if Soehn dumps Szetela before he gets canned, he will be the most hateful schmuck that has ever coached a team of mine, and that includes Bob Bradley.

We used our pick on him, we're not getting another great u-20 player who has played abroad in the forseeable future.

Bench him if you hate him, but then get the *$^% out of dodge.

It's kind of a tricky situation with the roster spots. The most likely player to be cut would be N'Silu, who is on the injured list (thus not taking up space, just cap room). Khumalo's infection makes him a candidate for the injured list, opening a senior spot. I doubt Shipalane would be signed to a senior spot; instead, I feel like Kocic would be promoted to the senior minimum, opening a developmental slot for Shipalane.

That's not even the tricky part. I doubt anyone would be surprised or upset if, when he comes off the injured list, N'Silu was waived. There's no one worth cutting to make room for him, and frankly his $72K salary is possibly our least reasonable (yes, including Emilio, who can at least point to a 20 goal season at some point). That would still leave us with 20 senior and 4 developmental spots all filled whenever Khumalo comes off the list. Someone would have to be cut or traded for picks/cash. The likely candidates:

Khumalo - Seems unlikely; I think Soehn likes his energy and versatility, and he meshes well with Moreno.

Allen - Out of the cadre of wide midfielders/forwards we have, Allen is the least likely to play forward and has only played on the left. To me, he's the most superfluous player on the roster.

Shipalane - Highly doubtful that we'd sign him only to kick him to the curb that fast. On the other hand, Allen's only been on the team for a month longer...

DiRaimondo - Soehn always wants an enforcer around, and he can play centrally or on the right in a pinch. I think he's safe, despite being a bit redundant.

Janicki - His awful form and the signings of Habarugira and James are dangerous to him. If Soehn would rather play Burch as a center back at this point, he's in deep trouble.

So, long story short, I see all this shuffling ending with Kocic on a senior deal, Shipalane getting a developmental spot, and cuts for N'Silu and one of Allen or Janicki. Oh, and I doubt Smarte has the goods to stick. He didn't do well as a right back in San Jose, and in our formation he'd probably be more suited for right midfield (where he'd be up against about 75% of the roster). Maybe he's grown in the PDL, but it seems unlikely to be enough to get onto this United squad.
