Matchnight #22: United-Galaxy

Greetings from a very soggy RFK Stadium.

Being RFK, we are bound to have a delay tonight for: a) power outage; b) lightning; c) water-logged pitch; d) all of the above.

Hope for the best.

For details about Coach Tom Soehn's absence, please see the previous thread.

INJURY UPDATE: Boyzzz Khumalo's broken wrist became infected and he was hospitalized all week. He had hoped to return next week; now he's looking at being sidelined another four weeks.

Winless in league play for five weeks and without a victory of any kind since the U.S. Open Cup match against Rochester a month ago, United is in urgent need of a good result. Will Danny Szetela be part of it? I doubt it. From what I hear, the recently acquired midfielder landed himself deep in the doghouse for an unspecified transgression.

Some stats to consider:
Galaxy is 5-1-6 on the road, DCU is 5-0-4 at home.
Galaxy is 6-0-4 against Eastern clubs, DCU 3-3-5 vs. the West.
Galaxy is 8-8-1 all-time at RFK (regular season).
Nine of L.A.'s 27 goals have come in the last 15 minutes, 10 of DCU's 34 in the same period.
Eighteen of 34 goals allowed by DCU have been scored in the last 15 minutes of the first half or first 15 of the second half.

TV: Fox Soccer Channel, 7:30 p.m.
Announcers: Max Bretos and Christopher Sullivan.

Starters and subs soon.....
DCU: Wicks; Namoff, Jakovic, Burch; Fred, Simms, Olsen, Gomez, Wallace; Quaranta, Emilio. Subs: Kocic, John, James, McTavish, Jacobson, Pontius, Moreno.

Your pregame, in-game and postgame thoughts are welcome.

Oh well...There goes the season...See ya at the game anyway...

Come on Goff!! Dying to know what Szetela did. What transgressions would get you this far in the dog house?

Posted by: RetiredShark | August 22, 2009 6:14 PM | Report abuse

Wear a baseball cap and enjoy free parking in Lot 7.

Posted by: BigBubba1 | August 22, 2009 6:14 PM | Report abuse

Just added a note to the thread concerning Khumalo's wrist and more bad news.

Posted by: Steve Goff | August 22, 2009 6:20 PM | Report abuse

I love Bretos.

I am gonna go out on a limp and say the game will be delayed through a series of crazy events from the "ladies night party area."

Posted by: grubbsbl | August 22, 2009 6:21 PM | Report abuse

For those who can't watch....

Jozy entered the game at about 60' for Hull making his premiership debut. His first touch is a perfect flick on to a striker for Hull to go up 1-0.

Great start for Jozy! He should deff see a lot of playing time at Hull, which can only be good for everyone!

Posted by: tphasbdp | August 22, 2009 6:24 PM | Report abuse

I wonder what the crowd will be like tonight? Has the Beckham effect worn off, or will 10,000 screaming fangirls be there to contaminate one of US Soccer's cathedrals once more?

Posted by: kdiff813 | August 22, 2009 6:32 PM | Report abuse

Count me among the curious wondering what Szetela did to land in the doghouse. Considering how promising his arrival seemed to be, he must have reeeeeeeally effed up.

Posted by: SportzNut21 | August 22, 2009 6:36 PM | Report abuse

Or it's something minor and Soehn is just being a d-bag... taking out all his angst on the new guy.

Lineup is sadly what I predicted (well, I had Fred on the left and Pontius on the right with Moreno up top, but still figured we'd go out in a friggin 3-5-2, guaranteeing at least 1 Donovan breakaway goal.

Posted by: alecw81 | August 22, 2009 6:52 PM | Report abuse

My current theory is Szetela stole Soehn's centrum silver - leading to Soehn's sickness and Szetala not even making the bench.

Posted by: noptov | August 22, 2009 6:52 PM | Report abuse

Well, that was a good use of the new allocation...surely Goffinho will figure it out!

Oh, and during the pre-game on FSC, one of the morons called them the DC Eagles... ugggh.

Posted by: alecw81 | August 22, 2009 7:31 PM | Report abuse

Well then.......let's speculate, but stay true to the possibilities.

I think he took a swing at someone in practice or in the locker room.

Any one else care to play?

Posted by: RetiredShark | August 22, 2009 7:34 PM | Report abuse

Peddy, I am forever indebted.

Posted by: UVAtoRFK | August 22, 2009 7:43 PM | Report abuse

Showed up to practice hungover or something similar is my guess

Posted by: alecw81 | August 22, 2009 7:43 PM | Report abuse

Cuss word dissension at the coach in front of the team or walked off the field during a scrimmage.

Posted by: RetiredShark | August 22, 2009 7:47 PM | Report abuse

It's already obvious that this will be 11 vs 12... a horrible Phantom Offsides call negates an Emilio goal, and then Ben gets a very soft yellow simply for making the egregious mistake of fouling Beckham.

Posted by: alecw81 | August 22, 2009 7:50 PM | Report abuse

Wo Gomez shaved his head...and Fred?

Idiot announcer said Bianca would love Paris. Duh.

Posted by: Reignking | August 22, 2009 7:57 PM | Report abuse

He's all over Tino's back and we can't get a call?

Posted by: alecw81 | August 22, 2009 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Soft-ground studs cumbersome?

What morons Bretos and Sullivan are.

Posted by: alecw81 | August 22, 2009 7:59 PM | Report abuse

Fire Ashton! Ashtontheexit .. .

Posted by: delantero | August 22, 2009 8:05 PM | Report abuse

What on earth could D Stetz possibly have done to not even be on the bench?

Posted by: delantero | August 22, 2009 8:07 PM | Report abuse

Olsen must really be old, the FSC sideline doofus said that Olsen came up to Arena before the game and "the old teammates" shared a hug.

Posted by: delantero | August 22, 2009 8:09 PM | Report abuse

Doesn't have quite the same ring to it Delantero... But other than Simpson I wouldn't mind saying goodbye to the whole coaching staff.

Posted by: alecw81 | August 22, 2009 8:09 PM | Report abuse

Wow...DC really putting some shots on now.

Posted by: Reignking | August 22, 2009 8:14 PM | Report abuse

Great series, from Fred to Tino to Namoff, but still nothing in the net. We have to shoot low and crash the goal. There's bound to be rebounds.

Posted by: delantero | August 22, 2009 8:15 PM | Report abuse

Emilio wide! End to end action after the rain has stopped...

Posted by: Reignking | August 22, 2009 8:17 PM | Report abuse

WOWOWOWOWOW. I had to get on to say 100% onsides and the second play was 50-50 watch carefully. On my tv there is another galaxy defender out of frame it looks like quaranta was on possibly. SKETCHY. Dc is possibly playing their best game of the season and we can't catch a break.

Posted by: jdickinson187 | August 22, 2009 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Let's just hope they don't come out flat to start the 2nd half...

Posted by: alecw81 | August 22, 2009 8:35 PM | Report abuse

D Szetela..."trans"gression...
gender test????

lol

I see alot of bandwagons at the game tonight...24k+????

Posted by: TheWashDipsSince88 | August 22, 2009 8:37 PM | Report abuse

So that's onside but Emilio was off... god these Refs are really making it hard on us.

Posted by: alecw81 | August 22, 2009 8:44 PM | Report abuse

Very late read by Wicks on the Beckham cross finds Magees head. Dodge a bullet?

Posted by: delantero | August 22, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

Holy crap, Landycakes almost looks like Maradona against England.

Posted by: delantero | August 22, 2009 8:47 PM | Report abuse

It's time for Pontius to come on for Emilio.

Posted by: alecw81 | August 22, 2009 8:52 PM | Report abuse

Jaime beats three and Berhalter's bump leaves us wanting.

Posted by: delantero | August 22, 2009 8:57 PM | Report abuse

Pontius for Wallace would be my choice. Either way, I think Party Boy can turn the game.

Posted by: delantero | August 22, 2009 8:58 PM | Report abuse

How was that NOT a PK? Seriously?

Posted by: alecw81 | August 22, 2009 9:00 PM | Report abuse

Namoff gets crushed. No call. Wallace touches Dela Garza and a yellow?

Posted by: delantero | August 22, 2009 9:02 PM | Report abuse

Bite me Bretos. Hands on the chest of Emilio and that's not a call>

Posted by: delantero | August 22, 2009 9:06 PM | Report abuse

This officiating crew should have their credentials pulled. Absolutely horrible.

Posted by: carnack | August 22, 2009 9:14 PM | Report abuse

the best analysis does not come from bretos or sullivan but from a fan who yells: "geiger you are a jacka@#, f@#k you!"

Posted by: birdynumnum | August 22, 2009 9:16 PM | Report abuse

Fred heads to the locker room, not the bench? What gives?

Posted by: delantero | August 22, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

So we have another game (against LA again, mind you), where DC will not received the points it earned because the Officials are incompetent. This is not the way to run a professional league.

Posted by: carnack | August 22, 2009 9:27 PM | Report abuse

United was again screwed by Geiger...

Does it shock anyone that MLS is trying to ease the path for LA to a Cup?

Posted by: alecw81 | August 22, 2009 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Refs certainly were easier on LA than DC. That was totally a PK. But I have to say our forwards are not getting it done.

Posted by: wichne | August 22, 2009 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Bretos and Sullivan REALLY need to get off the Galaxy's collective dick. Every time they got possession, it was "Oooooo look how the Galaxy have been applauding!!" *Thunderous applause*

We definitely controlled the game. They were able to counter a few times, but if anyone should have been praised for their performances, it was United.

Posted by: kdiff813 | August 22, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

2-0 final. Nice goal by Emilio to open it up and PK from Moreno. I'm just going to go on believing that rather than hunting down and expressing my real thoughts to the officiating crew direct.y. WHEN IS THIS GODFORSAKEN LEAGUE GOING TO GET SOME PROFESSIONAL REFS???????????

Posted by: speculation | August 22, 2009 9:39 PM | Report abuse

Get used to these experienced men in the middle; several established officials have fitness issues. DCU bites. Get used to that as well.

Posted by: lgm6986 | August 22, 2009 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Correction: INexperienced men in the middle.

Posted by: lgm6986 | August 22, 2009 9:58 PM | Report abuse

The ref missed two PKs. The foul on Emelio was obvious, but there was a hand ball in the box late in the second half the ref missed. That being said you have to put away your chances and DCU did not. So you really can't blame the ref even though Geiger was mediocre at best. He seems a little biased, but that is my highly skewed opinion.

Posted by: no_recess | August 22, 2009 10:15 PM | Report abuse

By now Szatela must have paid for his sins. If he still deserves punishment than it can't fixed.
I don't care what he did, get him on the pitch or trade him. Kiss and make up or get a divorce already!!!

Posted by: 9Nine9 | August 22, 2009 10:19 PM | Report abuse

@9Nine9

I agree, but I think this is an ego thing with Soehn. He does not like to be shown up.

Posted by: no_recess | August 22, 2009 10:23 PM | Report abuse

Great game from DCU, bad luck, bad calls, more bad luck. Glad to see those watching at home were as shocked by the offsides and non-PK as we were at RFK. Also, Fred haters, you have the week off. Emilio haters, you should also take the week off, but since despite Emilio doing most everything right tonight, he didn't connect, you probably won't.

Posted by: dccal | August 22, 2009 10:27 PM | Report abuse

ditto..great game from DCU tonight despite the frustrating result. Our two newbies were impressed with the pace. And i definitely enjoyed the rare 400 section viewing. The Beckham effect most definitely has worn off. Thinking back to the last two games there was no teenybopper shriek at all tonight.

Posted by: DCB23 | August 22, 2009 10:33 PM | Report abuse

Fred put in his best performance of the year.

Emilio was standing offside most of the time. If he's going to play on the edge he needs to use the other edge.

Wallace was way too slow with the ball in the first half, especially.

Donovan and Beckham didn't do much of anything.

For sure not Mr. Geiger's best job.

Posted by: fedssocr | August 22, 2009 10:34 PM | Report abuse

I thought Namoff had a great game and was Man of the Match. Unfortunately, when your right fullback is MoTM it usually means your team didn't score.

I might have missed him, but I looked for Szetela among the players doing warmups at halftime and did not see him out there.

Bad news about Khumalo. Some good news for United is that Harrisburg lost 1-0 at Richmond tonight and was eliminated from the USL2 playoffs. So Ty Shipalane should be available quite soon.

Posted by: Joel_M_Lane | August 22, 2009 10:51 PM | Report abuse

I guess Alecko's nose hasn't healed yet. How did that happen anyway? Elbow in training?

Posted by: Pedalada | August 22, 2009 11:01 PM | Report abuse

I liked how Fred played. I thought Emilio did a good job as a target forward, holding the ball and distributing it. Moreno was an excellent sub in the second half.

Namoff saved our bacon a couple of times by blocking shots on goal.

I liked how Josh Wicks came to the Barra Brava after the game and traded his gloves for a Barra jersey. Also classy move of Bruce Arena to applaud the Barra.

So Jacobson was DC United's third sub?

Posted by: billindmd | August 22, 2009 11:06 PM | Report abuse

Jacobson was the third sub, you didn't notice him running onto the field and shunning Fred?

This game was still well worth watching. Two teams I could picture in the Cup Final if they got healthy and lucky at the same time.
DCU aren't push overs, and in all honesty have some great tools to get the job done. The problem is guys are looking for some sort of divine hands to drop down and guide those tools instead of working hard themselves. Maybe not...
Either way, tonight proves I'm not a total idiot when telling non soccer fans that an 0-0 draw can be riveting.

Is it just me or was that push of Emilio a penalty? I don't want to complain if it wasn't without a doubt more of the highway robbery we've seen of DCU this year. On one hand I don't know about changing a game that'd played out like that on something that could be left to interpretation, but it seemed like homeboy was not playing the ball at all and was playing the man. A penalty right?

Posted by: DadRyan | August 22, 2009 11:29 PM | Report abuse

Jaime for Gomez.
Pontius for Olsen.
Jacobson for Fred.

I was very surprised how well the team held their shape, and stymied LA's attempts to get Donovan on a breakaway.

Posted by: alecw81 | August 22, 2009 11:31 PM | Report abuse

I have said this before -- whenever Mark Geiger refs a game, you can be sure of one thing Every close call will be wrong. He sees a different game than the rest of us.

Of course, the worst call was made by the assistant. I do not think Emilio was offside. However, if he was, there is no way the assistant could have discerned it. Way too close to call that against Emilio.

Unfortunately that was it for the real threats. When DCU starts scouting new talent, they need to find people who can actually shoot. Not right at the goalie, or a million miles high or wide.

My props to those who came out. I ate my ticket for the first time. It is hard enough to watch this team in good weather.

Posted by: fischy | August 22, 2009 11:31 PM | Report abuse

I'd put Wallace's first half whiff in front of the LA goal right up there with Janicki's in front of DCU's goal last Tuesday. Just not the touch of a professional soccer player. In fact, I'd check the whole offense for swine flu - isn't s__tting your pants one of the symptoms?

Posted by: Godfather_of_Goals | August 22, 2009 11:32 PM | Report abuse

Boyzzz's arm getting infected is pretty ominous. He has hardware in the arm to set the bone, and an infection bad enough to put him in the hospital means the hardware is likely infected, too. That's usually IV antibiotics for an extended period of time. Oof! Open it up, stick in a drain, very messy.

Namoff made 2 great stops, as usual. WIcks was solid. Moreno had a moment or two of brilliance. The rest are hardly worth mentioning. Fred played a pointless game. He even lost the ball after dribbling backwards for 30 yards. He is a waste of considerable soccer ability. Gomez -- I heard he started tonight. I wonder if anyone can anyone prove that....

Our great rookie class: Pontius cannot shoot, Wallace cannot cross....I would take Omar Gonzalez.

Posted by: fischy | August 22, 2009 11:43 PM | Report abuse

Alright I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that it's time for United to start looking beyond this season. With this home tie, our MLS Cup expectations can't be very high any more. Points to consider:

1. Why isn't Szetela playing? If it's because of Tommy, it's definitely time for Tommy to go. I'm still upset that he didn't cut Janicki the day after Marathon.

2. Fred was voted "Man of the match." What does that say about our talent on the field????

3. I'm tired of all the conspiracy theorists saying that the refs are out to get us every game. It's ridiculous. Let's face it.. we're all biased as hell.
