Can we leave Soehn behind too?

Wicks stay behind to learn when to leave his line?

What's the point of this trip? Unless the fine for forfeiture is greater than the cost of flying everyone over there, why not quit while we are ahead?

This roster hints at N'Silu's imminent departure - I don't believe the IR applies to CONCACAF, and he is certainly not injured at this point.

It's too bad Fred isn't going on the trip, that way San Juan Jabba the Hut could push him into that pit where he would be digested for thousands of years.

Remember how the A-League was so mad to have him leave? Can we trade him back for a stuffed koala bear or something?

So if Outback did a "That's Australian for Soccer" bit in one of its commercials, what would it show? Three guys piling on to the goalie while Fred runs in with the ball tucked under his arm?

Posted by: regularfan | September 14, 2009 3:41 PM | Report abuse

Hey, just because Fred was consistently used out of position once he got here and lost any semblance of form does not mean we don't have good soccer players. Anyway, the Victory probably wouldn't take him back now because he's become so miserably bad.

Now on to the real story - Namoff is out from dizziness? Zakuani really did run circles around him....

Posted by: TassieTiger | September 14, 2009 3:57 PM | Report abuse

Speaking of affordable talents from down under, I'd aim for the following players:

Jason Culina (Gold Coast Utd),
Nathan Burns (on loan to some Greek 2nd div team from AEK),
Carlos Edwards (Melbourne)

Culina and Burns could probably be obtained via loans since A-League is spring to summer season (opposite seasons to MLS). Edwards we will have to buy outright like Fred. Some of you might remember Carlos Edwards' golazos against the Revolution few years ago in the CCC.

dadryan: still looking at my team...I hate picking my CL team, because I don't know who will play

Posted by: Reignking | September 14, 2009 4:11 PM | Report abuse

When Fred was the sole playmaker at CM he was a sold player. He never dominated a game, but his passes were tricky and insightful. He only got a chance at CM for DCU a while after he had been manning the left flank and he still wasn't the one the team looked to to make plays, as Moreno and Olsen were always around.

I don't want to sound anti immigrant here because I like the international feel of my team and fans but... can we please get an american who can run the flank and send Fred where ever the hell HE wants. I don't care if he goes to NY Red Balls just send him else where and let another player develop. The only real reason I want an American is because I think we could pay him less and sign a real DP after we plant # 11 in a forest so his roots can grow free and wild.

Posted by: MOCker | September 14, 2009 4:34 PM | Report abuse

Despite "rest everyone in the CCL" becoming the party line amongst DC fans, I don't think it makes much sense for this game. I have 2 reasons, and neither is my enthusiasm for the CCL as an event.

First, our next game is no less than 9 days away, and it's at home. So a player in the twilight of his career and a keeper that had several hard landings on the weekend need a break, but resting everyone when you've got 9 days is coddling in my book.

Second, and more importantly, this team's confidence is fragile. If we want to make the playoffs, we need to go into these last 3 home MLS games with some positivity and belief. This loss against Seattle probably put quite a dent in those things, and you don't repair it by losing to a team from the T&T league. It might seem easy to treat these games as an irritant, but if you've played before you know that losses, in any context, suck and make it harder to show up for the next one believing you'll win.

Given a squad that is hardly close to our normal group (which kind of flies in the face of what I just said), here's who I'd like to see:

---------- Gomez - Pontius
Wallace - Simms - Szetela - Shipalane
John -- James --- McTavish -- Vaughn
--------------- Kocic

It might seem early to toss Vaughn in there, but I believe I read he'd been training with us before the signing. I'm not psyched about McTavish and James, but that's what we've got. Vaughn and John should be told to play this one conservatively, though John's lack of ability on the ball should mean he plays that way every time out.

Szetela's going to be fresh, and the fact remains that he's the player most suited to our current 442 in the more attack-minded central role. That position, currently, isn't pushed up underneath the strikers; the player there has to be deep enough to do real defensive work, while also having the engine and urge to drive forward. We saw what happened when Wallace did this correctly against Seattle. I don't know what he did, and at this point I don't really care. He needs to start.

Shipalane and Wallace give us some athleticism on the flanks. Both should look to get to the endline and cut back more than the traditional "get wide and cross" approach. Make the defenders defend in the box; maybe we get a penalty or a fortunate deflection that leads to a goal.

Finally, up front, I go with Gomez underneath Pontius. I can't imagine Emilio has any real confidence after Saturday, and without that he basically lets the game pass him by. Pontius has had his finishing problems, to be sure, but he seems to forget them and push on. This also gives us more speed, which will cause San Juan Jabloteh some problems.

Posted by: stairs | September 14, 2009 4:04 PM

Comment of the day ^^^

I agree with Chest's lineup for the most part, although I'm not sure I'm willing to risk starting Simms after he's gone 90 minutes in every match we've played since he returned from injury. I'd rather keep Simms on the bench as emergency relief for any of our defenders, since we have no other defensive backups.

Kocic
Vaughn-McTavish-James-John
Shipalane-Wallace(CDM)-Szetela(CAM)-DiRaimondo
Gomez-Pontius

Required substitution no matter the score: Jacobson for Wallace at halftime

I've given Soehn the benefit of the doubt on Szetela from the beginning, but if he doesn't start this match I'll be pissed. I think I'm most excited to see Shipalane though. Wonder how he'll wear his shorts...

Or we could trade Fred to the Brisbane Roar for Henrique, a 24 year old Brazilian Right Winger/Forward, who scored 2 nice goals in their recent match against Newcastle (AU). Unlike Fred, he actually put shots on frame.

Posted by: alecw81 | September 14, 2009 6:21 PM | Report abuse

Considering we really only have 4 defenders on that roster, 6 if you count Wallace and Simms, I won't be terribly surprised by a 3-5-2, but think a 4-5-1 is even more likely:

---------------Kocic----------------
Vaughn---Simms-------James------John
---------Jacobson--DiRaimondo-------
Shipalane--------------------Wallace
---------------Gomez----------------
---------------Pontius--------------

I'd rather see Szetela in there, but won't be surprised if Soehn continues to stick him at the far end of the bench.

I'd rather see this:

----------------Kocic----------------
Vaughn----McTavish--James--------John
----------------Simms----------------
Shipalane---------------------Wallace
---------------Szetela---------------
-----------Gomez-----Pontius---------

Posted by: alecw81 | September 14, 2009 6:33 PM | Report abuse

You're both wrong:

---------- Gomez --- Pontius
Wallace - Jacobson - Szetela - Shipalane
John -- James --- McTavish -- Vaughn
--------------- Kocic

I wouldn't be entirely surprised to Allen start and give Wallace a bit of a breather, but I think this is one game where Wallace might be really effective on the flank.

To those who feel making a coaching change mid-season or now (i.e. kicking Coach Soehn to the curb) wouldn't accomplish anything I give you the 2009 Colorado Rockies:

This season, so far, the Rockies are 82-62.

They started the season with a different coach (Clint Hurdle) and were 18-28.

With their current coach (Tracy) they're 64-34.

I most certainly am. I'm actually in the keep Bozo The Coach through the end of the season-camp but that doesn't matter really.

The point is, a fresh voice in the lockerroom (not to mention a coach who isn't in love with the 3-5-2 when he knowingly doesn't have the personel for it, not to mention hasn't had it for 3 years or a coach who will actually play the same 11 a few games in a row to actually develop some on-field chemistry together) could do wonders no matter if it's from day one, day 50, or day 97 of the season.

DCUMD:

My only problem with your lineup would be using DiRaimondo wide. He's been tried on the right, and to me it looked like he was out of position. He's right footed, so it stands to reason that he can't shift out there (especially in a 442 that requires more offensive ability).

I could live with swapping DiRaimondo and Wallace in your lineup. I would worry about him picking up a quick sending off (this is CONCACAF, after all), but it wouldn't be a lineup that made me start drinking immediately upon kickoff.

fischy:

Ditto for yours with Jacobson instead of Simms. I'd be a little more OK, actually, if only because Jacobson is less likely to get himself sent off.

***

I'm in the Champions League group as well. Hopefully I can repeat or better my near-victory over all other US based teams (back in 2000, when I should have been paying more attention in college). The ensuing years have been mediocre to poor by comparison.

Posted by: Chest_Rockwell | September 15, 2009 5:15 AM | Report abuse

You guys, I'm trying to sign up in the Champions League, but I can't. Your bogging down the server! "The Service is Currently Unavailable, please try again later."

So, I'm assuming, right after I get that error, trying again isn't later? :)

Anyway, I know, bad schtick...

As for Namoff's dizziness, didn't he take a crack to the noggin a couple of games ago? Or was it the Seattle game? Crimeny, all that drinking, done messed up my memory. But, to be honest, I'm fine with Tommy resting Namoff. I'd much rather him be fresh for the continuation of the hunt for the playoffs.

Senor McPoop, while I do not disregard your desires for a new coach now, personally, I don't see it being benificial to the team. Firstly, what candidate would there be for the new coach? Though, I will say that I think at the end of the season, especially if we don't make the playoffs, Tommy boy is gone.

From what I've seen, though, James worries me greatly. It's kind of sad that we're only bringing, listed, 4 defenders. I know Simms and Wallace can also fill in those spots, but, I guess we gotta do what we gotta do.

So, off I go to continue to try to register and hopefully I'll not forget to finish and be part of the "cool crowd". :)
