Matchnight #28: United-Chivas USA

Die-or-do time for DCU.

After dropping the past two league home matches, United is running out of time to pick up points in this wildly congested playoff race.

The best-case scenario for the club tonight: DCU (36 points) defeats Chivas (38); Columbus beats Seattle (38); and New England (37) and Colorado (39) tie. The New York-San Jose late game and tomorrow's Kansas City-Houston match have no bearing.

Factoid I: DCU is winless in four straight against Chivas USA (0-2-2) since beating them the first five times they met.

Factoid II: Both probable starting goalkeepers, DCU's Milos Kocic and Chivas USA's Zach Thornton, starred at Loyola in Baltimore -- many years apart. Kocic is 24, Thornton turns 36 next week. On a side note, DCU keeper Bill Hamid, 18, grew up idolizing Thornton before adding Tim Howard to the top of his list.

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. ET.
TV: The Comcast Network, Direct Kick.
Announcers: Dave Johnson, Sasho Cirovski.

DCU lineup and subs to come later.....
DCU: Kocic; Vaughn, Jakovic, James, Burch; Khumalo, Simms, Olsen, Quaranta; Gomez; Pontius. Subs: Sharpe, McTavish, John, Jacobson, Fred, Moreno, Emilio.

Your pregame, in-game and postgame contributions are encouraged.

MLSNET is listing Simms at forward with Pontius in the matchtracker. The first time I have ever bothered to look at the thing to be honest.

Either MLS needs to do a better job with that or we are screwed.

Since the "refs impacting the game" medal can be awarded to the LSU-UGA game crew, hopefully DC will be saved from having to deal with a bad PK or red card call tonight
[btw: how are players suppose to celebrate a key touchdown?]

I checked the Fios site and they don't list it for me ... but I'm about to search my channel guide and see if I get it.

I don't understand why soehn thinks subbing moreno for gomez is going to do anything when our midfield is getting absolutely hammered. What in the world is he thinkng? This pattern of subbing at the 42 nd minute is horrible

Posted by: strago | October 3, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

the move is doublely puzzling. Why the 42nd minute and why Moreno/Gomez ?

Posted by: emanon13 | October 3, 2009 8:28 PM | Report abuse

Goodnight guys, goodby season.

Posted by: JacobfromAtlanta-ish | October 3, 2009 8:48 PM | Report abuse

Normally I would say at this stage, with a few adjustments, dcu can take this thing. But that would require leadership from the bench. I count myself as possibly the very last regular on this board in Soehn's corner. At least, keep him until something clearly, demonstrably better becomes an option. Now, if they can't find a way to take control of this joke of a match, screw him. Anything is better than this.

Posted by: Godfather_of_Goals | October 3, 2009 8:48 PM | Report abuse

Like I said... no midfield at all. It's time to blow it up and start over without soehn, emilio, fred, gomez, moreno, and maybe olsen. Thanks for your service guys

another reason to fire soehn. this team has no discipline. olson loses his mind. pontius with a dumb tackle. it goes on and on...

Posted by: birdynumnum | October 3, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

kosic has showen well. neither goal was really his fault. the first one was just bad luck. that is the silver lining for this one.
so next game vs the best team in the conference no benny and no pontious, second string keeper, and probably a team with no reason to really play. I imagine we will be out of the CCL and out of the playoff picture. we might lose by 3+ goals...scarry.

Four of our final five games are/were at home, we faced teams like SJ or Seattle (struggles on the road). We had a break before this set of games happened. If by some weird quirk of nature or math we should back into the playoffs, this team doesn't deserve to be there. I admire and respect or like most of our players individually. But collectively, we have played as if we want to throw away our playoff chances.

Posted by: JoeW1 | October 3, 2009 10:12 PM | Report abuse

I arrived late to the match - parking was such a nightmare (well more the traffic into park) that I turned around frustrated at myself and frustrated at missing the kick-off.

WHAT LUCK!

I didn't have to sit through that misery - then walk to the depths of Lot 8 to fight my way out to 395.

I have my renewal letter sitting on my table right beside me. I love the club. But the last two years have really been not so banner for an organization that prides itself on winning. Tradition and Honor come from success domestically and abroad. It doesn't mean keeping the same unit again and again. It worked in the first half of MLS' years, but now it's a different formula and we officially do not have the personal that are picking up the diamonds in the rough and surrounding them with capable veterans. We are grasping at straws in the past.

Turn the page. Change the direction. And get us a stadium!

Posted by: VirginiaBlueBlood | October 3, 2009 10:14 PM | Report abuse

Go Hokies! Uh oh, wrong thread!

Sorry, got excited over the win in Columbus, and escpcially the Hokies win today!

Posted by: Crikey1 | October 3, 2009 10:19 PM | Report abuse

I was walking up to the stadium from Lot 8 about 20 or 25 minutes before kickoff and some blonde lady had parked her black SUV right across the crosswalk on the walkway that comes up from the Barra Brava and Screaming Eagle tailgate areas.

She had blocked the entrance into the fenced in parking lot and gotten out of her vehicle to berate some guy that was wearing a Fire Soehn t-shirt and I thought she was going to hit the guy (she only kicked a box that was next to his feet as hard as she could). She was going ballistic and screaming, "WHY DON'T YOU TRY COACHING THE TEAM!!" at him.

Anyone know if Soehn is married, and, if so, what his wife looks like?

Posted by: Joel_M_Lane | October 3, 2009 10:24 PM | Report abuse

Hell one look at the line-up and the results were evident, Vaughn over McTavish, enough said?

So it's do or die at home and you lose 2-0, beyond shameless. Anymore crow left? That makes 3 straight home losses in vital MLS playoff games losing by a total of 6-2, that is serious crapola.

What are the chances that was Benny's last game at RFK?

Posted by: tcbannon
====

I'm going to miss the game on the 17th, so I'm guessing that this was the last game I'll see Ben, Christian or Jamie (and probably Luciano) in uniform for United. Truly the end of an era as these players all contributed greatly to DC. But they don't belong on the team next year.

With that much re-building necessary, lets hope United finds a new coach quickly so that the planning can start early.

That said, I'm too depressed tonight to count the days until the start of next season.

Posted by: Curious99 | October 3, 2009 10:35 PM | Report abuse

This game was lost before it started. A line up with 4 nominal defenders but really 1 plus 3 useless scrubs and 6 midfielders. For a match at home we had to win! With a fresh Luci and Moreno on the bench! After Gomez and Boyzzz played the whole game or almost the whole game on Wednesday. I have not really been on the fire Soehn bandwagon exactly, but that starting line up has pushed me over the top.

Olsen is an idiot. I hope he apologizes to everyone after that. He was looking like a hack all night grabbing guys as they ran past him. He just can't keep up anymore. Time to hang up the boots.

James gave up by about the 70th minute.

Time to blow it all up and start over. Keep the promising young guys and ditch the overpaid dead weight. At least a "rebuilding" year you can understand.

Posted by: fedssocr | October 3, 2009 10:50 PM | Report abuse

I too was late for the game - I'd accidentally locked myself out my apartment and then got taken to the cleaners by the locksmith who showed up and claimed he would have to drill the lock -- Yeah, I've had a pretty cr***y day. Anyway, I saw a young couple walking away from the stadium, with United jerseys on and scarves around their necks. It occurred to me after watching the game that they might have just shown up to get the supporters scarves and left. If so, they were the smart ones.

My impressions of the game? Really sad that this was probably our last look at Olsen playing in RFK -- sadder still that he went out the way he did. I feel like he did something similar once before. It's petty and ineffective. Like United's play. I share his frustration, because at times he seemed to be the only guy playing.

Quaranta played his worst game since coming back to United. His one good touch came to Emilio, who cranked one off without aiming it. Jakovic had some pretty awful touches, too -- and he also killed a great opportunity by awkwardly turning and shooting and firing wildly wide, just like Emilio did.

Posted by: fischy | October 3, 2009 10:50 PM | Report abuse

One more point about the players -- Is Kocic the worst goalie to don a United kit? I swear I had more confidence in Zack Wells.

For once, I'm going to put some blame squarely on Soehn's shoulders, because he did what a coach must never do. He heard the constant Brava refrain for "Jaime Moreno" and "Fire Soehn". Instead of ignoring it, he responded by bringing in Jaime for Gomito. Pointless sub. Gomez was right to be angry. Soehn has no answers, and he keeps shifting lineups hoping he'll stumble across some magic. It doesn't work like that. We need a coach with confidence that he has the answers.

I'm looking at my ticket renewal, and I'm wondering what to do about it....

Posted by: fischy | October 3, 2009 10:52 PM | Report abuse

OK -- one more point. There was a rumor that Fred came on after halftime. I did see some guy who looked like Fred nearly get stripped of the ball in the center of the field on our end- just narrowly avoiding disaster by poling it to another United player. Other than that, I didn't notice if Fred was actually playing. I know he's had a tough year personally. He has my sympathies -- but, if he's back in a United kit next year, everyone in the FO should be fired.

Posted by: fischy | October 3, 2009 10:55 PM | Report abuse

So much about the game tonight didn't make sense. first, they couldn't decide where Kumalo, Pontius and Tino should play. Then taking Gomez out for Moreno? Gomez had words with Soehn right there at the bench. At half time, a few players came back out very early (Olsen, James, Kocic and Tino that I noticed) I never saw Christian come back out. There's no way Jaime was diving - pure momentum and he was clipped although you'd be hard pressed to call it a penalty.

I didn't have any problem with not starting Emilio or Fred. Why bring them in at all? They aren't going to do anything the younger guys couldn't do. Like run. At least the younger guys run the whole game.

I'm just so thoroughly perplexed and disappointed I can't even write a coherent post. I'm going to bed. I know my 11 year olds will play better than this tomorrow.

Posted by: spata2 | October 3, 2009 10:56 PM | Report abuse

As much as I have enjoyed and appreciated what Ben, Jaime, Luciano and Christian have done for DC United, they all need to go, unless one or two of them are willing to play for reduced salaries in 2010. Fred probably needs to go as well, although he had his moments. Quaranta seems to have faded the second half of the season.

Can't believe the team is playing so uninspired at home during this critical time of the season!

just home and unhappy. 2-0 was absolutely better than we deserved. that was just a shellacking. sat with SE and had great seats, ruined by -- i'm not kidding -- chivas fans sitting behind me. in the SE!

by the way SE folks, I was the one that broke the pole on the flag. sorry. I was perhaps a touch too exuberant in waving it.

Goff, please post a video of the silly red card. I was too busy screaming and jumping up and down to see the replay on the monitor.

ah well, see ya'll on the 17th.

Posted by: troy6 | October 3, 2009 11:07 PM | Report abuse

oh yeah, and while it probably was a valid red card, I'm not sure the guy needed to drop on the ground like he'd been shot. I mean, Olsen THREW the ball. it ain't like he lined up a free kick at the guy. pansy (the chivas guy, not olsen).

Posted by: troy6 | October 3, 2009 11:08 PM | Report abuse

@Troy: Unless DCU expanded the Screaming Eagles' ticket allotment, I think your section is a DCU-sold area, not SE (which ends in Section 132 across the aisle to the left of you), which would explain the Chivas fans near you. I think.

You could write a book about how little Soehn knows or understands about this game. But rather than do that, why don't we promote him to the Red Bulls as their new head coach. He needs to go before the weekend's out and he ought to take Kevin Payne with him as well. Good riddens to both of them.

My wife and I have two teams hot after us to renew our tickets...United and Freedom.

Tonight helped me decide who gets our money.

Posted by: seahawkdad | October 3, 2009 11:21 PM | Report abuse

The timing on the DCU ticket renewal could not have been any worse. I will probably renew but I agree that the house will be cleaned this winter. This league is competitive, with the wear and tear of the USOC and CCL the small rosters, our older players just can't get it done anymore. Like last year, we just don't have anything left in the tank.

When I saw the starting lineup tonight I wondered where the goals would come from. Chivas sliced and diced our defense to pieces and we had nothing in the midfield at all. They had speed, technical skill and organization. The difference was stark.

I feel bad for Ben, to go out like that in what is probably his final game played at RFK but it just sums up the frustration. At this point we have no answers.

Posted by: sbg1 | October 3, 2009 11:22 PM | Report abuse

Ben owes no apologies, except maybe for his play while in the game. I would have murdered Cueta, right there on the field. What Goff describes in his writeup as a "foul from behind" was a running forearm to the back of the head, Olsen was completely defenseless. Then Cueta runs away from the scene. What a no class piece of dung.

Kumalo - you only got 45 minutes with this coach.
Moreno - A su casa!
Emilio - Hondures is calling
Fred - Stop saying your brazillian
Tino - So much potential year 7
James - stop hanging out with burch.
Olsen - FCUK off... very stupid!

This was hard to watch.

CCL is now the top priority. The MLS season is done. They must make sure that the absolute best line-up they can send out takes the pitch against Toluca.

Terrible game from everyone top to bottom. Quaranta, Moreno, Olsen, Kocic, Jakovic, Emilio, Pontius, etc all had an AWFUL effortless performance. Throughout the game I saw players frequently walking with their heads down in frustration--THIS HAS BEEN THE STORY OF THE YEAR!

As many have posted, Gomez's sub was ridiculous.

For all the adamant nay-sayers NOW is the appropriate time to say DC's playoff hopes are over. This was unexpected because we have the talent individually but not as a collective unit. This problem stems from the coach. If we fire Soehn now, can there be any benefit?
