Matchnight #30 - United at Kansas City
Greetings from CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, where I am eagerly awaiting the feast of Arthur Bryant's barbeque that sits next to me. I am in Kansas City, I figure I have to get some legit BBQ. I opted for the pulled pork.
I must say it's the most awkward viewing experience from the press box, as we sit behind home plate and a lengthy distance from the far side goal. There are about 40 wireless options here, about zero of which work right now. Still, it's about 40 more options than are available at FedEx Field. Don't kill me for a Redskins reference.
We all know what's at stake today. D.C United needs to win. They also need help.
The games/scores to watch tonight:
Toronto at New York, 7:30 PM
Colorado at Real Salt Lake, 9 PM
FC Dallas at Seattle, 10:30 PM
Again, here's the playoff breakdown:
If DC is the only team tied on 39 points to win, they will qualify
If DC wins and Colorado wins AND New England OR Toronto win, they cannot qualify (unless DAL, DC AND TOR win - decided by goal differential)
In the case of a tie on 40 points (RSL win, DC tie), DC will qualify ONLY if FC Dallas AND DC tie, or if DAL AND DC AND TOR tie
Fun stuff. I'll get back at you with lineups later. For now, I'm off to enjoy my pulled pork.
Some surprises in the lineup today. Not just that Fred is starting, but that he is listed as Fred Carreiro, which I've never seen before. Also, D.C. is opting for a 4-4-2 and veterans Ben Olsen and Jaime Moreno start on the bench.
DCU Starting Lineup: Cronin; James, Jakovic, Burch; Wallace, Gomez, Szetela, Simms, Fred; Emilio, Pontius
Subs: Moreno, Khumalo, Vaughn, Olsen, Jacobson, John, Kocic
D.C. United at Kansas City Wizards
When: 8:30 PM
Where: CommunityAmerica Ballpark, Kansas City, KS
TV: CSN+
As usual this is your place for pregame, in-game and post-game commentary...and score watching.

Vamos United!

Paul - as a native Memphian I have to tell you, I believe you've made a mistake. KC has mastered the art of beef BBQ, but nothing in the world can beat a pulled pork sandwich from Memphis.

Note: A Dallas LOSS knocks us out of the playoffs.
Posted by: B_A_ | October 24, 2009 10:46 PM | Report abuse
You cant blame it all on Fred - the ball got through the box - he was manning his corner and got a direct hit at his arm. Poor defending on the corner cost us. Wallace's defending cost us.
Posted by: AnthonyTheGreat | October 24, 2009 10:49 PM | Report abuse
It seems odd, but we need Dallas to tie --- sends it down to goal differential, where DC comes out on top. If Dallas loses, DCU loses on tiebreakers to Colo. and RSL.
Posted by: fischy | October 24, 2009 10:49 PM | Report abuse
You can't blame that on Fred at all. If he doesn't stop the shot with his arm, it's a goal anyway....

OK. two seasons ago I bought (non-season) tix to DCU games because they were a winning team and the atmosphere at RFK was awesome.
Last season I bought a half-season-ticket plan because they had just come off their second straight Supporters Shield-winning season.
This season I bought a full-season-ticket plan because I would up going to just about every home game the previous season, even with a half-season-ticket plan.
After tonight's game, there's not much of a reason for me to buy another season ticket package (unless DCU were to back into the playoffs and qualify for the next CONCACAF Champions League by doing a Red Bull and somehow getting to the MLS Cup final), but regardless of whether DCU makes the playoffs, I'M STILL BUYING SEASON TICKETS FOR NEXT YEAR.
I became a fan of DCU because of its winning record (at the time that I started paying attention), but now, I admit it:
My Name Is Juan-John, and I'm a Soccer Junkie.

It seems odd, but we need Dallas to tie --- sends it down to goal differential, where DC comes out on top. If Dallas loses, DCU loses on tiebreakers to Colo. and RSL.

"It seems odd, but we need Dallas to tie --- sends it down to goal differential, where DC comes out on top."
First tie breaker is W/L (ties don't count?) record against tied teams. For just RSL, Col, DCU it is
RSL 2-1
Col 2-2
DCU 2-1
which eliminated Col and goes to second tie breaker (GD) where RSL advances. Start again... Col and DCU are 1-1 against each other, Col advances on tie breaker. That is why Dallas needs to have 40pts.

fischy, if you're a comcast subscriber why didn't you watch the whole game live? It was on comcast+.. what gives? Caps fan?
I watched at my neighbor's who has verizon fios, and the game was on channel 1....
Anywayz. Crazy game. Had fun watching. I've run out of fingers to count draws that felt like wins on. This one is a draw that mid season would have felt like a win, but in this case it feels like a loss.
James is a soldier. Funny watching Fred realize he'd be the biggest wuss in the world if he didn't get back on the field with James playing in the state he was in.
Too many chances wasted by United all season long. Gomez, Wallace, etc. I would have peed in my pants had Olsen scored on that volley in the box early in the second half.
Maybe we squeek in...
Hope we get some preseason match days in Charleston!
Vamos United!

and yeah, Gomez got a cut or something on his forehead early on, and then on an odd ball offside scramble in the box he looked to have had his foot stepped on by one of KC's players. He tried to run it off but then had to be helped off the field. I say he broke something in his foot.

So, now we turn our eyes to next season. Who stays, who goes? Players and coaches, of course, or at least perhaps. Still, think realistically who the management can replace them with? Start the debate.

So long Fred at your current salary, if not forever. Thanks for everything.
So long Moreno at your current salary, if not forever. Thanks for everything.
So long Gomez at your current salary, if not forever. Thanks for everything.
So long the Chad Allen's, David Hambrugia's, etc.s. Thanks for everything.
Hopefully the offseason brings in both the management and player levels. Also here's hoping for some good news in-regards to the stadium situation.
Good luck DCU, you've got your work cut out.

Man MLS needs a single season cause all this tie-breaker crap does not help the cause. Its a headache that just needs to go away. If it stays, goal differential is the simplest way.

So with DCU officially out of the playoffs, next year it has three trophies to go after:
US Open Cup
Supporters Shield
MLS Cup
Won't have any Champions League games on the docket (which means more "Game A" tickets for season ticket holders to those slightly-pathetic USOC play-in games), so maybe a lighter schedule will work in the team's favor.
See y'all next season!

FYI- Don't blame Fios for the Maryland CSN+ problem. I talked to somebody behind the scenes on this one. It is Comcast. They will not let Fios carry the channel in some areas of Maryland. Just a ploy by Comcast to try to get subscribers to move to their infinitely inferior product.

I hate the way Seattle plays as much as the next guy, but the fact remains that DCU had their chances this year and they simply screwed the pooch. A lack of an ability to put away games came up to bite this team in the rump time and again. How many times did they have a lead only to lose it late in the game and settle for a tie? I'm not joining in the gloom and doom club when it comes to next year. Sure, some changes need to be made for next year, but I think there are enough young and talented players on the team that can be used to re-build quickly. It's time to lose the dead weight of some of our over paid players and bring in some new blood. If Cronin can stick around, along with Milos and Hamid, I think we're ok for goal. Wicks is not the answer in my opinion. Jakovic, James and Namoff are a solid beginning to any defense. The midfield is a little shaky but Wallace, Q, Danny Szetela and Simms are a good start. Up top, if Jaimie can take a pay cut and be a guy to come on late in the game and finish games, he is servicable and of course Pontius has potential to be a good forward. Any one not mentioned above is a sub at best in my opinion or just needs to be let go altogether. Tommy should probably go if a good replacement can be secured. New ideas are needed on the bench.

I'm still confused about tie-breakers... If NE loses, I think first is (8) ppg in tied group: RSL 1.6 (advances), Col 1.4, DCU 1.0. Then head-to-head W/L between two teams (1): Col 1-1, DCU 1-1. Then GD (2): Col +4 (advances), DCU -1.
If NE wins, same as above except only one gets in. Col eliminated, DCU eliminated.
If NE ties, then ppg: RSL 1.57, NE 1.5, Col 1.29, DCU 0.83. So DCU and Col eliminated.
Bottom line, RSL is in, DCU is of course out. If NE win/tie, NE in. If NE lose, Col in. (Unless I'm still confused!)
