Matchnight: USA-Honduras

We're nearing the end of World Cup qualifying in CONCACAF, and still nothing has been settled heading into tonight's critical matches in Mexico City, San Jose and San Pedro Sula.

First up is Mexico-El Salvador (6 p.m. ET, Telemundo). Any doubt El Tri will bury the Salvadorans, who executed the upset at Cuscatlan earlier in the hexagonal?

Wounded Costa Rica is in the most desperate situation, but with the eliminated Soca Warriors coming to Saprissa, it's another match where the home side is heavily favored.

Which leaves us with USA-Honduras (10 p.m., closed circuit). Los Catrachos have won eight straight at the Olimpico in this qualifying cycle and are seeking to all but clinch their first World Cup berth in 28 years.

If the Internet gods are with me, I will keep you updated via the Insider's Twitter page.

And of course, your pregame, in-game and postgame comments are warmly welcome.

Did anyone else just see the crazy bug related delay in the Mexico-El Salvador match?

Mexico just scored in the 25th min.

Wish there was a way to watch...just crazy I can watch Mex and not us.a

Steven G. - Can you imagine if England were playing in a WC qualifier and the match not shown on TV in the UK! There would be outrage, my friend. Therein lies our problem. The USSF has little regard for its fan base, no mechanism for ensuring the US national matches are shown on TV and basically, its processes are not positive for soccer growth. I'll be sitting in section 117 at RFK for the CR match. Hopefully we will have qualified by then. If not, the US can do it that night. No thanks to the USSF for its lackluster organizational efforts.

"Can you imagine if England were playing in a WC qualifier and the match not shown on TV in the UK!"

You mean like the England/Ukraine game earlier today?

online viewing for tonight's game? Bueller, Bueller, anyone?

Posted by: ddd001 | October 10, 2009 7:42 PM | Report abuse

All,

You should check http://www.myp2p.eu/index.php?part=sports at 10 pm to see if you can pick up a feed for tonight's match. They do list several possible Internet feeds including Honduras TV. I can't promise the quality but do use this site to watch a lot of the Euro leagues and saw the Denmark-Sweden match this afternoon. Give it a shot.

Mexico just went ahead 3-0 on on a goal by Paco Palencia. The goal before that was from Cuauhtemoc Blsnco so Mexico is only going through thanks to the benevolent influence of Major League Soccer.

As noted above, there was a crazy delay when about a minute into the game a beehive was apparently found inside the Salvadoran goalpost.

El Salvador just got one back on a graet 35 yard freekick to the upper 90 from Julio Martinez. But it's too late since it's now the 88th minute.

El Salvador put up a good fight keeping it at 1-0 til about midway thru the 2nd half.

See you guys in a couple hours.

Go Gators. Out for an early dinner tonight and saw more Gator jerseys than any of the local schools - not including my son and me.

Posted by: I-270Exit1 | October 10, 2009 8:06 PM | Report abuse

Final whistle from Batres and Mexico wins 4-1. Vela got a very late goal after a Salvadoran defender gifted him a chance as he headed back a long Memo Ochoa goalkick to set up Vela.

Estadio Azteca is buzzing like a beehive and El Salvador is eliminated.

I've gained some confusing geographical knowledge in the past few hours as I've been told Denmark and Mexico are in South Africa.

Going to Molly Malone's now...

I guess Blatter's efforts to prevent El Tritanic from sinking worked. He wont be in a short fall of cash this world cup.
I just know that they are not able to win outside of the Azteca and it will show in the upcoming months.

I can't believe how many times in the past two weeks I have seen the "This would never happen in England!" mantra brought out only to see people slink away when they realize that the greed of rights holders is not a phenomenon limited to the US.

The lineup, per Twitter. Um...

Howard; Spector, Onyewu, Bocanegra (c), Bornstein; Holden, Clark, Bradley, Donovan; Casey, Davies

Posted by: Section117 | October 10, 2009 8:56 PM | Report abuse

Subs are: Guzan, Cherundolo, Torres, Altidore, Conrad, Feilhaber, Cooper

Posted by: Section117 | October 10, 2009 8:57 PM | Report abuse

I really hope that Casey being in there is a joke. Casey is not international quality. The US is definitely going to lose this one because they are starting the game a man down with casey in there.

The crowd is going wild 1 hour before the game.

Posted by: Barracudas | October 10, 2009 9:01 PM | Report abuse

There's a part of me that likes having a forward on the bench who can change the game. But then there's the rational part that never ever wants to see Casey on the roster.

Is Cherundolo just horrible? Why does Bradley refuse to play Spector on the left? I can't imagine he would defend worse than Bornstein. This isn't a game that's going to be won though attacking prowess from our outside backs.

Would love to join you at Molly Malone's but DH is claustrophobis, and I' positive it will be a mob scene. Justin.tv is a good bet. And I hope you will feel compelled to update here, often. Don't worry about mispellings -- we just want the stuff!! Go, Goff! Vamos USA!

Posted by: sbuck | October 10, 2009 9:30 PM | Report abuse

OK, so Torres ain't playing tonight. If the USA wins, then he'll start in a meaningless game at RFK.

C'mon, Goffinho, what did Torres do to tick Bob Bradley off so much?

And why is Jozy not a starter tonight, yellow card notwithstanding? HOLDEN gets a start? Umm, OK, but wow...

Posted by: Juan-John | October 10, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Oh good grief. Can't the USA EVER get a different set of referees?!?

Posted by: Juan-John | October 10, 2009 9:58 PM | Report abuse

I am so sad for this team that Conor Casey gets the nod over any other US forward! Bradely is pathetic! Casey must be extorting him some how. I do not care that he is the leading scorer in MLS. I hope he has a career ending injury! This is ridiculous!

US strategy:

Let Honduras hold the ball as long as they want
Let them shoot on Howard
Howard save it or get the goal kick
Boot it down the field
Hope to get a foul or corner kick
Donovan takes a free kick

This game is going from awful to worse.

What a match! Congrats to the US men's team for being the first team in the last nine qualifying matches to get a result in Honduras.

Gotta give some credit to Bob Bradley - I would have never started Casey or Bornstein. I had to follow the second half through Soccer Insider, and it sounds like Bornstein held his own.

Thanks everyone for the updates. Was great following the second half that way. I have a pickup game this morning, so I decided to crash, and I was tired of the Internet feeds repeatedly getting shut down.

@ birdynumnum

I wanted Casey to have the career ending injury. I still think that I am right. Casey has not business on this team. First he fouled the Honduran GK and then scored with his neck and not his head. He did have a nice finish on the second goal, but I still hate the SOB because he is overrated. Ching, Cooper, and Casey are great MLS players, but they are not internaitonal quality. Altidore should have started. Watch Casey on the wing in the 60th minute. He could not even send in a decent cross. Watch Casey either give the ball away or miss most of the high balls played his way. He sucks!

Posted by: no_recess | October 11, 2009 9:42 AM | Report abuse

No recess! No recess for no recess! Wait to hang on to your resentment all the way to the bitter end.

Since you're "No Recess" you should probably just stand in the corner with your nose against the wall while everyone else is playing.

I went to Molly Malone's - the feed was atrocious but every US fan still had a great time. The hue was way off and blue looked green (like we were playing against Real Betis). Tim Howard wore a pink jersey (probably something to do with breast cancer awareness month). Even some of the security / stormtroopers on the sidelines were decked out in pink helmets.

Posted by: Joel_M_Lane | October 11, 2009 9:59 AM | Report abuse

norecess-
The first goal was not a foul because:
a) Casey was first to the spot,
b) Casey did not extend his arms and push the GK.

He did not charge or push the GK. He ran to the ball, and the HON GK charged into him. The GK was just too small and too late to make a difference.

Sunil Gulati should be fired for letting this happen. Of course that will never happen since he is so tight with the Krafts. The USSF is tying to win a world cup bid and they can't even ante up to make sure the game that the US qualifies in is televised. How can FIFA possibly take us seriously? I really feel bad for the players. This would have been a great help for players like Connor Casey (excellent match) to possibly get a look in Europe.

I really don't care about Casey's career or his livelihood. I hope he makes what he is worth, but it is frustrating to watch the likes of him on the field. Yes I apoligize to the Casey lovers and Casey himself. I overreacted by hoping he never plays soccer for the US again. It was a classless comment. I am sure I will get chastised by all of you deservingly so. However he did foul the GK and I was watching a British who mentioned it was also a foul. To all you Casey lovers out there way to jump on the bandwagon. In my opinion he is still not good enough for this team.

Posted by: no_recess | October 11, 2009 12:10 PM | Report abuse

Right there with ya in regards to the assessment of Casey's play and the surprise start.

I found myself in a bizarre scene last night . . in a very cool, and very full bar called the British Bulldog in Denver, CO. Much to my surprise, a half dozen Colorado Rapids players popped in to watch the game and sat at our long booth.

They laughed when the starting lineups read "C. Kersey" and a few even expressed surprise at his start.

But recess, you can't ignore results. 2 goals (albeit one lucky bounce off his back) and a trip to South Africa. And yes, up till the goals, he looked like a bumbling fool, but he scored twice in a cauldron, including showing some very nice patience and touch on his second goal.

His counterpart, the more refined and traveled Pavon sure didn't.

As a soccer fan I remember well the lean days of 1970's and 1980's. There was no hope, NONE of making the World Cup. In friendlies, the US would get PASTED by the MINNOWS who did make it, and got PASTED by many minnows who didn't.

Now, we are EXPECTED to qualify for the world cup, and we DO. We are EXPECTED to get out of the group stage, and we did that in 2002. We can go toe-to-toe with the very best teams in the world, though we might not usually win.

Though we we have room to improve, the US has arrived as a serious competitor in international soccer.

Kudos to the boys.

You're missing the point. Home team control of the rights goes both ways. Thus Gulati and Co. have leverage. Before the first meeting between the two sides in Chicago, U.S. Soccer could have insisted on reciprocity in terms of suitable TV arrangements in both countries for both matches. If their Honduran counterparts did not go along, then the Honduran public would have been searching the Internet for bootleg feeds on the evening of June 6, just as many of us were doing last night.

I cannot wait until Wed to see our team! Casey & Donovan played crazy great last night. As for the defense, just glad that Howard is the starter for Everton, since our best defender is sitting on the bench & wasn't 100%. When people complain about MLS players on the US team, they should think about the guys sitting on the benches in Europe.

Too bad for Ireland, thought they were going to beat Italy. Of course Germany would beat Russia, but I do want to see Russia make it, they played so well in the Euro. & it just wouldn't be a World Cup w/out 2 of the forwards on Barca (France & Argentina).

Posted by: johnlclark | October 11, 2009 2:06 PM | Report abuse

Some thoughts:

Gooch & Bradley need matches because they WILL play no matter what for Nats and they were both terrible.

Boca needs to move to LB to solve that mess.

We battled last night but were very fortunate not to lose by 2-3 goals. Honestly Honduras coked.

But it turned out to be a great party on the sidewalk which was about 6 deep and people spilling into the street. Got a 6 of Lagunitas IPA from the corner store and shared them with my brethren so we could celebrate my eating some delicious crow.
