Arena: MLS Coach of Year

Bruce Arena, who turned the Los Angeles Galaxy's fortunes and brought harmony to the club's high-profile roster, was named MLS coach of the year.

Seattle's Sigi Schmid, who guided the expansion Sounders to the playoffs, and Columbus's Robert Warzycha, who oversaw the Crew's second straight Supporters' Shield, were the other finalists. Arena also won in 1997 with D.C. United.

Arena's influence on USA soccer is immeasurable. A few of his disciples:

*Bob Bradley (Virginia and DCU assistant, USA national team coach)

*Dave Sarachan (Virginia, DCU and USA assistant, coached Chicago to MLS Cup, Galaxy assistant)

*Curt Onalfo (UVA player, USA assistant, former Kansas City head coach)

*Richie Williams (UVA, DCU and USA player, Red Bulls assistant/interim coach)

*George Gelnovatch (UVA player and then assistant, USA assistant, more than 200 wins as head coach at Virginia)

*Clint Peay (UVA and DCU player, University of Richmond head coach)

*Bob Jenkins (UVA assistant, American U. head coach, USA under-18 coach, head of Richmond Strikers club player development)

*Jeff Agoos (UVA, DCU and USA player, Red Bulls executive)

*John Harkes (UVA, DCU and USA player, U-20 assistant, DCU youth development, Red Bulls assistant, ESPN commentator)

*Eddie Pope (DCU and USA player, MLS players' union executive)

*Marco Etcheverry (DCU player, coach of Bolivia's Oriente Petrolero)

*Raul Diaz Arce (DCU player, U-17 assistant, Chicago Magic club coaching)

*Lyle Yorks (UVA and DCU player, one of American soccer's most influential agents)

Unrelated, but Lilian Thuram in the booth for an in-game interview on the online broadcast of UVA vs UMD (ACC tournament). Pretty cool

How can you forget Claudio Reyna?

As I recall, Reyna did not leave the Pink Cows on very good terms with Arena, so perhaps that makes him an ex-disciple.

Boston College has dispatched Duke in OT. The gametracker for the other game (Maryland-UVA) seems to have problems, as it hasn't been updated since the 81st minute. Does anyone know what is going on there?

Posted by: universityandpark | November 11, 2009 5:30 PM | Report abuse

Ughh. Just saw a commercial for the Eagle Bank Bowl at RFK... Wonder how much worse the field could get at RFK.

Dear Goff! Any news on the pitch at RFK in the offseason? I know everyone is waiting for news on a new coach, etc. but any word on any extra care being taken this year, or will we continue to see football lines next season?

universityandpark, I'm guessing you know that Virginia scored way late and won. The live feed is pretty good. It's two bad they can't really run both games at the same time, but still cool. Are you just choosing to watch game trackers instead of the video feeds?

DR: I didn't know the UVA-MD result, and I thank you for providing it. I was indeed watching the live video, but then I had to turn my attention to something else. By the time I got back, the video feed had been terminated, and all I was left with was that silly gametracker that had frozen at 80:46 or something.

Wake Forest leads Clemson 3-0 in the second half. Unfortunately, it can't be seen on ACC Select because it is taking place at the same time as the NC State-UNC match on the next field. That game is scoreless after regulation.

Cobi Jones. USA Player, LA Asst Coach, will one day soon enough be a (likely good) head coach.

Also, does this surprise anyone? I can't imagine it would, good for him.

Jacob: Do you think Jones should be on DCU's radar screen?

Posted by: universityandpark | November 11, 2009 7:37 PM | Report abuse

Final
Wake Forest 3 Clemson 0

Cobi Jones is one of the last people I would want to see on a DC sideline.

Posted by: sitruc | November 11, 2009 7:40 PM | Report abuse

Not necessarily, I just think his intangibles would make him a good motivator of players, and from what I remember of his career (I was either too young or in and out on soccer during his playing days) he seemed a solid play in terms of game IQ.

Also, forgot to mention since I haven't had a chance today in this forum, big thanks to all the Vets out there.

NC State-UNC is about to go to PKs.

Posted by: sitruc | November 11, 2009 7:49 PM | Report abuse

State took a 2-1 lead in the PKs as the keeper saw the shot going to the right and saved it. He followed it up by taking the next PK for the Wolfpack and then saving the next shot to his left.

NC State beats UNC on PKs 4-1

MoLM, if I may, what exactly are you talking about? I can't find anything anywhere about anything like that.
