Beckham Status and MLS Notes

Galaxy star David Beckham, who has a bone bruise on his right foot and has been wearing a protective boot, says he will play in Sunday's MLS Cup. He will receive injections to manage the pain.

Today at Qwest Field, Beckham trained for the first time this week.

"We're not anticipating any issues," Coach Bruce Arena said.

Much more on the continuation .....

*RSL midfielder Kyle Beckerman, describing former teammate and longtime MLS nuisance Dema Kovalenko: "He's on the borderline crazy out there. He's really intense. He likes to get in tackles. He likes to fight. He likes everything about a fight. So he really brings that competitiveness to his game every day."

*RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando, on the challenges of playing on artificial turf compounded by rain: "For the goalkeeper, it's a nightmare really. You have to adjust, look at the skipping balls. Especially when it's a beautiful day like today." [sarcasm]

*Responding to a statement/question that the Galaxy is the heavy favorite, Arena quipped: "Where are we heavy favorite? I haven't seen any lines on this game. I think Vegas has taken $12 on this game. [Arena sarcasm]

*RSL General Manager Garth Lagerwey, on veteran Andy Williams' late-season contributions: "You've seen 'Twilight', right? He has resurrected himself like any good vampire." [pop culture sarcasm]

*Ticket sales are around 40,000 but organizers do not expect additional sections to be opened at the NFL venue, meaning capacity will be about 42,000.

Uh oh...the fines from the league office are on the way. How dare Arena mock the epic hugeness that is the MLS Cup Final!!!

It figures Beckham would be faced with an injury right now. I'm surprised Donovan hasn't gotten hurt too. Maybe the lights can go out a few times at Qwest Field on Sunday, or a freak monsoon can pass through Seattle.

American soccer is perpetually cursed. Stuff can never just go perfect for once. The stars never quite line up right. It's always something -- every time. Seriously: Think back to every single opportunity soccer has had to make a step forward in this country. Something always pops up to keep the moment from being everything it could have been.

So this time it's that Beckham will be playing hurt in the biggest game of his MLS career, on Sunday prime time television.

Seattle, WA [Reuters] -- David Beckham, who will appear for the Los Angeles Galaxy in Sunday's MLS Cup, has sought a highly unorthodox treatment for his bone bruise. According to an anonymous source who overheard Landon Donovan talking to Grant Wahl over a lunch of tofu quiche and mangotinis, Beckham will seek the services of a Mercer Island housewife to massage his foot with the placental fluid of an Orca. Orcas are strongly identified with Pacific Northwest mysticism and are believed to have healing properties. According to the eavesdropper, Beckham heard about Robbie Van Persie's intended treatment and thought he could do even better than horse placenta. His original request was to use the placenta of another Pacific Northwest icon, the Copper River salmon, until he was disabused of that notion by someone with an elementary school knowledge of biology.

Tournament winner
Los Angeles Galaxy 1.55
Real Salt Lake 2.30

For those who don't know, that's return on a dollar bet, including your original dollar, for a correct bet.

So LA are clear favorites, but not huge favorites.

By comparison a $1 bet on Wolves to beat Chelsea will get you a $15 return if successful.

And Chris Wingert to score the first goal of the match will get you $67!
