Video: Penalty Kick Distractions
From the America East tournament semifinals, Hartford goalkeeper Nenad Cudic used cartwheels on the goal line in an attempt to distract the shooters. Stony Brook's Anthony Rogic repeatedly tapped the crossbar. Both were mocked after yielding a goal. The Seawolves (5-9-4) advanced to Sunday's final at home against UMBC (14-5-0).

Sorry, but that ref's a piece of crap to allow the timewasting. And how can you not disallow a save when the keeper comes a yard off the line?

The cartwheel bit was really bush league. No disrespect to Hartford's coaching staff but if I were them, I would be embarrased.
Bush league.

Hmmmm...only slightly less annoying than the garbage Donovan does before PK's.

Shouldn't the keeper be carded for shaking the goal?

HA! Just terrible. Those goalies were a tad bush league. Though the PK's are what concerns me the most. Awful.
And yes, I could have done better.

And this is why the rest of the soccer world mocks us...fans of the other major sports in our country must be rolling on the floor after this...seeing those players do that makes me feel dumber...

As spectator it's funny as hell but I would of been a tad bit peeved if I were the coaches. I think it is disrespectful to the team and to the opponents.
Could have the tapping GK been guilty of moving the goal giving him an advantage? Since it's fieldturf the goal isn't anchored down into the ground it's anchored by sandbags. Repeatedly hitting the goal as he did could have moved it a few inches. But then again I don't think any went wide. And it might be a moot point anyways as it appears the back bar of the goal either runs through football goal post or the goalpost sits in front of the bar.

I can slightly see the purpose in hitting the cross bar, though shaking the goal is too much and could have reasonably been stopped by the ref. The cartwheels though? The GK's cartwheels combined with the mocking cartwheels give you the raw materials for a Monty Python skit. All that's missing is the voiceover.

great. another video to e-mail to the "Soccer Guy" with a mocking cover note. Maybe we deserve it. Can you imagine a D1 NCAA hoop player doing cartwheels while his or her opponent is shooting a free throw? Or a football player defending a field goal?

i don't even understand how this is supposed to be distracting? i also don't understand why the ref just stood there waiting to blow this whistle until the guy finished his stupid cartwheels, he should have blown the whistle while he was upside down.

No wonder Cam Weaver scored so many goals in that 2nd division!

Bush League? Really? It's the American East semifinals... It's not even a "BCS" conference. It's immature and shouldn't have happened, but it's D1 soccer not professional.

That video felt like some old British comedy skit mocking soccer.

Is that an A.R. on the line or just a spectator? If it's an A.R., why doesn't he signal when the GK jumps a yard off the line before the ball is kicked? All of those penalties that were saved should have been retaken.
They must have flown that ref crew in directly from the BYU-UNM game.

The refs is to blame for this nonsense. If he had carded the first keeper, it wouldn't have come to this. What a joke!

That kind of goal is virtually unstoppable.
I've watched plenty of high level soccer and about the only hope a defender has is to pull the attacker down by the ponytail.

Pretty stupid all around -- goalkeepers, referees and the shooters who missed so miserably.
Notice how the goal is not aligned with the white line? Good thing for the referees that no deflections came off the post along the goal line. That would have been interesting. Shame on the refs for not even noticing -- checking the goal for that sort of thing is a must.

the saves remind me of brianna scurry in the world cup final. she went early and off the line on the game-winning save. not that I complained about it.
but yeah, a card for time-wasting would have stopped the silliness, but who does it really hurt? I especially liked the striker who mocked the keeper with a few cartwheels of his own.

Not to defend Donovan, but at least OCD is a recognized medical disease in the DSM-IV. Regarding the Hartford keeper, as far as I know, being a jackass hasn't made the diagnostic manual, yet.
Posted by: DrBeaker | November 13, 2009 6:18 PM | Report abuse
For those complaining about the keepers being beyond their lines, that and/or players from both teams entering the area before the kick happens on virtually every penalty you'll see taken. Letting that bother you would be like pulling people over for doing 56 in a 55 mph zone.

I think the Hokies just got past the first round for the first time in their short women's soccer history.

The women are kinda short there, sitruc, but no need to draw attention to it. That's just mean.
