""No longer covered by British tribute payments after the American Revolution, United States merchant ships were seized and sailors enslaved in the years that followed independence. In 1794 the United States Congress appropriated funds for the construction of warships to counter the privateering threat in the Mediterranean. Despite the naval preparations, the United States concluded a treaty with the dey of Algiers in 1797, guaranteeing payment of tribute amounting to US$10 million over a twelve-year period in return for a promise that Algerian corsairs would not molest United States shipping. Payments in ransom and tribute to the privateering states amounted to 20 PERCENT (!!!, emphasis mine) of United States government annual revenues in 1800."

There really is no group where there are 3 favorites. The hardest to predict is Group A. France should advance. Mexico and Uruguay are close but you can't rule out the hosts.

Group A esta el Grupo De Muerte.

Posted by: adecool79 | December 4, 2009 1:35 PM | Report abuse

For those lamenting Mexico's "luck"...

Mexico has the curtain jerker with South Africa on June 11th (Are they really going to the beat the host team in the Capital City in the first game?)

Then they face France on June 18th. (No way they win that one.)

They could very well be eliminated from further advancement when they finally get Uraguay on June 22nd.

Posted by: CapsNut | December 4, 2009 1:35 PM | Report abuse

Pretty much as good a draw as USA could hope for. Especially considering our bad luck in draws lately. Everyone is saying how easy Mexico will advance, I'm not so sure. They SHOULD move on, but France will not be easy, obviously, and playing the host team is never a guarantee. I'd honestly rather be in our group than Mexico's.

Yeah, I thought Mexico was getting another cakewalk, but now it looks like they'll have at least as hard a time getting thru as the US. The home country always gets breaks, and France will not be an easy opponent.

US got about as good a draw as was possible. Too bad we open against England, but even it we loose that one we can still compete with the other two.

Posted by: hacksaw | December 4, 2009 1:46 PM | Report abuse

G, followed by A are toughest. Sub Swiss miss for Portugal in H and it would be pretty even. Ivory Coast; best African team last time. Perhaps Mexico is poochie the dog, or France when the refs clamp down in the retaliatory pay back.

This draw is as good as we could expect. England is getting old and has not done well in recent Cups. If we don't beat Algeria, we don't deserve to advance. The Slovenia game will probably be the deciding match.

I just hope Gooch is healed up by June.

From a personal perspective, having at least 1 game on a Saturday means I have to take less time off work! And it will be nice not to be up at 1 in the morning on a weekday this time!

Posted by: Dougmacintyre | December 4, 2009 1:48 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: alan19 | December 4, 2009 1:54 PM | Report abuse

I concur with most of you, Group D is by far the toughest. Here are my predictions:

A: Mexico, France
B: Argentina, Nigeria
C: England, USA
D: Germany, Ghana
E: Netherlands, Cameroon
F: Italy, Paraguay
G; Brazil, Ivory Coast
H: Spain, Chile

Mexico, France, Argentina, Italy and Spain all have cakewalks into the next round (or as close as you can get). And most of the African teams I picked because relatively speaking they got decent draws as well. Should make for a fun tournament.

Oh and of course the US got the best draw they could have gotten.....teamwise. I just hope we don't relax and think we have it easy. We tend to play to the level of our competition which could be very bad for us. Luckily we start with England, so that should help, even if we lose as is likely the case we should be ok, get the loss out of the way and we'll be fine. If we steal a point the 1st game we're set. Unfortunately it looks like Ivory Coast or Portugal in the round of 16, yikes! That is how it normally works right? #2 G vs. #1 H.

Mexico 3-0? No way. They aren't beating France, period.

The best I figure they can do is either 1-1-1, or 1-2. But I really think they will end up 0-2-1 stealing a point from Uruguay which won't be nearly enough to get through. Maybe 0-1-2 if they're able to withstand the home team playing in the first game.

It'd be nice to play Ghana in the round of sixteen and get some revenge for '06, but I'd put my money on seeing us play Serbia.

Best not look past Slovenia though. Their game against favored Russia, played in Russia with the winner advancing to the WC a few weeks ago ought to give us pause.

Posted by: KireDCU | December 4, 2009 2:34 PM | Report abuse

I vote for G as the Group of Death. Brazil, Ivory Coast, and Portugal could all make the quarterfinals easily, maybe the semis. D is the next toughest. Group H seems easy for Spain, but they'll have to face a tough team from G in the Round of 16. Argentina, Italy, and France all got off easy. I don't mind if the U.S. loses to England, as long as we advance out of the group and beat the crap out of Germany in the Round of 16. :-)

Posted by: mrmoogie | December 4, 2009 2:42 PM | Report abuse

whoops, thats right, US is in C...hah. So D winner, well that may or may not be Germany. With the group of death (IMO) maybe someone else sneaks to #1. Germany would be the worst, but otherwise it'd be about as good as we could hope for. Let's get through the group first though right?

Yeah, if someone can provide an explanation, I'd really appreciate it. I'm stoked with Algeria, but when I saw Ivory Coast drawn I thought they were coming to group C. I'm still confused.

OK, just rewatched the draw and got a little help from comments at SBI.

The first two African teams from pot 3 were drawn automatically into groups B and G, and the first non-African team from pot 3 automatically went into group. This was to alleviate the geographical issues and make sure they didn't get in a situation where they got down to groups G and H and only had South American teams left to be drawn.

Unfortunately, the talking heads at ESPN were yapping their pieholes while the guy was explaining this, causing many a US fan to have heart palpitations until they saw that, for no well explained reason, Ivory Coast went to group G.

Pretty disappointing production overall, doesn't bode well for next summer.

Is this site down?

Odd that I see no posts since 609pm yesterday with lots of stuff going on.

UVa beat Maryland and UNC beat Drake to get to the Men's final four in NCAA soccer.
