Friday Night Lights
*Insider loyalists were first to learn that Carlos de los Cobos, a Mexican who guided El Salvador's national team to the final round of World Cup qualifying, had emerged as the leading candidate to become Chicago's head coach. And now the Fire is preparing to introduce him as Denis Hamlett's replacement Monday at Toyota Park. You can watch the event live on the club's Internet machine beginning at noon ET.
*Chivas USA has loaned forward Eduardo Lillingston (eight goals in 25 league matches) to Mexican second-division club Tijuana for the next six months. He will be eligible to return to MLS after the transfer window opens July 15.
*Akron sophomore forward Teal Bunbury, who is expected to be among the top 10 picks in next Thursday's MLS draft, was presented the Hermann Trophy as the nation's top college player. The other finalists were Wake Forest junior midfielder Corben Bone and Harvard senior forward Andre Akpan, both of whom have also signed with the league. Stanford senior forward Kelley O'Hara won the women's award ahead of North Carolina senior midfielder Tobin Heath and UCLA senior Lauren Cheney. All are available in next Friday's WPS draft.
*The latest from the African Cup of Nations following the attack on the Togo team bus.

Good day for El Salvador...
1. Former Boss gets a job elsewhere (Most of us hated to see him go, but we just couldn't match fianacially what he wanted)
2. He will very likely bring a couple of national team players to the team (Like Julio Martinez/Miguel Montes)
3. Because of USA and Mexico's broadcast dispute, Mexico will now face El Salvador on Feb 24 in the Rose Bowl according to OEM.Com.Mx.

Gallas just pulled something in his back when he was running to the ball.

Bad heading clearence from Donovan leads to an Arsenal goal. But I don't know if he could've gotten any more power on it.

The sopcast feed at 69850 is fantastic.
People were worried about this kind of attack for the U17 WC, too...

I'm reading an Everton forum match thread thing and all the Everton fans are saying "sign donovan permanently"

Donovan's off...he looked pretty gassed the last couple of minutes, but it looked like a good start!

I made it up. Just this morning. I've also made up and trademarked Hull's Bull. That hasn't gone far.

LOL RK...
I must admit that the atmosphere in this match has been excellent. I thought Donovan did pretty well for a guy who has probably just been chillin' by the pool for the last month.

Is there a USMNT nickname clearinghouse that I need to apply to? :)
Donovan is more than chillin right now...freezing is more like it.

That was frusterating.

I really don't have any attachment to either team. Or any team in the Premier League for that matter. From a semi-neutral standpoint that was a fun game to watch. Gotta love the snow.
Have a nice afternoon folks.

Any idea whether the player's union is going to shut down MLS with a strike?

They're just waiting to be goaded into it by rightwing nuts on the internet.
I live in the Blue County of Arlington where we don't much tolerate those crazies from outside the Beltway. Tie 'em up to a chainlink fence and stuff their mouths up w tofu and quiche, I says...

In other WPS news, Old Pride is moving from Santa Clara to Hayward. It doesn't sound as if the 'Quakes will have them as a secondary tenant in their new SSS, assuming it ever gets built:

Why did we let Lori Lindsey go? That doesn't seem very smart.
