Donovan Scores, DCU/MLS News & Notes

*USA midfielder-forward Landon Donovan has scored his first goal in the English Premier League, a 19th-minute strike from 15 yards with his left foot to give Everton a 2-0 halftime lead over Sunderland. [UPDATE: Donovan plays 76 minutes in the 2-0 victory.]

*The Honduran publication El Diez is reporting that D.C. United has taken an interest in defender Quiarol Arzu, who plays for Platense and started for the Honduras under-23 squad at the 2008 Olympics. Arzu, 24, plays central defense and defensive midfield. One Insider contact says the report is accurate but it remains unclear whether a trial or a deal is in the works. The club has declined comment on all player pursuits.

*DCU defender Dejan Jakovic discusses Canada and MLS.

*The Seattle Sounders have capped season tickets at 32,000 -- yes, you read that correctly -- and are less than 1,000 short of reaching that total. (Some MLS teams need three weekend matches to claim 32,000, and that's the Sounders' starting point.) Last year Seattle's season ticket total was capped at 22,000. Capacity at Qwest Field this season has not yet been set but is likely to be around 35,500.

*The Sounders and Colorado Rapids will face one another in a preseason charity shield fundraiser March 19 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Proceeds will be donated to UNICEF to aid relief efforts in Haiti.

*Dan Steinberg's Sports Bog looks back at the MLS Kansas City Wizards' recent game with the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers. Huh? Yup.

Atta boy Landy cakes. Can't wait until June 12.

Looking more and more like other leagues around the world - one team has a capacity crowd in a 30K+ stadium, and they go on the road to play the minnows in their half-full 10K seater.

Congrats to Landon as well.

...and the supporters chant, "U-S-A! U-S-A!"

Congrats Landon. However, you'll have to average a goal a game before the Eurosnobs argue that "Landycakes" was a term of endearment all along.

Can we stop with the Landycakes?

Good for Landycakes!

I feel like I read a Honduran rumor linking us with Arzu last year as well...deja vu or no?

In any case, it's nice to see us linked with players in positions we need to fill. Playmaker is still a big question mark, but I'm guessing that one will be kept closer to the vest for as long as possible.

Definitely not a Eurosnob, but I've been calling him Landycakes for years, since he's such a soft little sweet b*$%#.

Donoman out after 75.

Posted by: Reignking | January 27, 2010 4:45 PM | Report abuse

Sure, it's great for Donovan to score his first EPL goal and what have you, but I think we can all agree that the real winner here is Fischy, who yesterday predicted that Donovan would score.

Soccer Insider 1, Sunderland 0.

Huzzah!

Apparently another golazo from Sergio Canales today...

We were linked with him (and Norales) in 2008/2009 to bring him in for a trial.

Any highlights out there of L.D.'s goal? Here is a question, when you hear the intials L.D., who do you think of first? Larry David or Landon Donovan. I think its a toss up.

Chest, you posted this a year ago:

Bored? Rumors are fun, right?

http://www.laprensa.hn/Deportes/Ediciones/2009/01/01/Noticias/Chavez-cerca-del-DC-united

La Prensa in Honduras has Osman Chavez joining DCU if United and his club, Platense, can come to an agreement. Later in the article, it mentions that Adan Ramirez (defensive midfielder) and Quiarol Arzu (defender of some sort) will be on trial with DC. Arzu didn't miss a minute during the Olympics for Honduras (wearing #2 in a squad starting Erick Norales and Samuel Caballero, I'd guess he's a right back), while information on Ramirez was a bit harder to come by.

Does anyone know if Chavez is a right or left back? Or anything about these other guys?

Posted by: Chest_Rockwell | January 2, 2009 4:11 PM
------------------------------------------------

Whatever became of Chavez? If memory serves, the Galaxy put in a discovery claim, so DCU couldn't sign him then. Why not now? More interested in the younger, cheaoer version?

Anyone find the highlights for Lando Calrrissian's(sp?)first?

Posted by: UniteforDC | January 27, 2010 5:21 PM | Report abuse

Well done, Landycandy.

And well done, Seattle.

Here's a reference to Arzu:

USA clinched Group A in the Olympic qualifying tourney, when Arzu pulled down Charlie Davies deep in stoppage time. Gaven knocked in the game-winning penalty.

Good thing he wouldn't have to contend with anyone of Davies' caliber....

Posted by: fischy | January 27, 2010 5:24 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, he sucks. LOL.

Posted by: UnitedDemon | January 27, 2010 5:26 PM | Report abuse

Tim Howard also requires congratulations for recording his 50th clean sheet for Everton.

Posted by: spikeman | January 27, 2010 5:29 PM | Report abuse

Arzu is a good player, and goes forward well. Would be a good investment in the future...and could play right away.

Posted by: nico78 | January 27, 2010 5:38 PM | Report abuse

Answering my own question: Chavez had a trial late last year with Celtic, but didn't get an offer. Then, there's a whole bunch of pieces last month claiming Blackburn were on the verge of signing him. Nothing lately... I'm guessing DCU has been priced out of the market, regardless...

Well, he'll always PARTLY be Landycakes simply for doing this (don't worry it's safe for work, home, public restroom, etc.):

But atleast he did man up, have a good laugh, and even signed it when I showed that picture to him last year during the DC/LA opener.

fischy-
Osman stated that he will not move clubs until after World Cup, in order to avoid the possibility of not playing regularly. He wants to be sharp for the WC.
Sorry can't find the link...but it was from Diez.hn
There continue to be rumors about a move to England and to South American clubs.

I just watched a BBC clip of the Moyes interview. He said, of Donovan, that he has a real goal scoring knack, "for an American."

At least Landon is exceeding expectations.
