Tuesday Kickaround

*Columbus star Guillermo Barros Schelotto has agreed to a new contract with the Crew, the Insider has learned. Schelotto, 36, had considered returning to Argentina after the Crew sought to significantly lower his base salary, which was $650,000 last year. No word yet on the structure of the new pact.

*Fox Soccer Channel is expanding into the world of HD! Introducing FSC Plus, which is scheduled to launch March 1.

*Soccer America reports that Eric Wynalda, one of America's greatest scorers and perhaps its most outspoken, will serve as an assistant coach during the U.S. under-20 national team's tour in Mexico this month. Wynalda has a USSF "A" coaching license.

*The number of cities to be included in the USA World Cup hosting bid for 2018/22 will be cut from 27 to 18 today. ESPNews will provide some coverage after 3:30 p.m. ET.

*Here's why American supporters should be happy that Algeria, a 3-0 loser to Malawi in its African Cup of Nations opener, is in the USA's World Cup group:

Let's hope they keep that keeper.

Stupid play on the first goal, but still required a great finish.

Was that Algeria's A-Team?

Wynalda should be great as a U20 coach... until he goes all Bobby Knight on one of the kids.

Good (initial) news on FSC. Still like to see a couple of more pieces of news in there.

Like:

-Will all the providers in the area carry the HD FSC?
-Is FSC picking up ALL Setanta's soccer coverage (ie SPL, Championship, etc) or just what was mentioned in the article?

If those two things happen, great. Not having to have Setanta will save me lots of money...which I can put into getting DirectKick.

Soccer America also reported this about Fox, which is good news to me. Andy Gray is top shelf.

"Fox Soccer Channel will air a live, one-hour studio show each day during the World Cup and has hired Andy Gray and Richard Keys from Britain's Sky Sports to join its studio crew during South Africa '10."

PS --

GET TROY BACK.

Was Algeria's bus shot up on route to the tournament? They looked pretty bad. They will have to improve significantly in order to get out of the group in South Africa...I think that is the 3 points we MUST have...USA will advance out of that group.

Wynalda should coach gymnastics or figure skating, where nit-picking and brow-beating young athletes over every perceived mistake is an asset. Sigh... let's hope he's a better coach than analyst -- otherwise I see a lot of talented kids taking up lacrosse.

Goff, any word on which cable providers will be carrying FSC HD?

Posted by: mellon02 | January 12, 2010 10:04 AM | Report abuse

My guess is that FSC has a full plate with the leagues it already has. I doubt they will pick up the other Setanta leagues. Isn't it the case that Fox owned all the EPL rights and sub-licensed them to Setanta? So they are basically just getting those assets back. Seems like the HD channel will mainly just have the HD feed of whatever is on the regular channel, when available.

Depending on how much Fox is charging I would also guess that most of the providers carrying FSC now will add the HD channel when it becomes available as long as they have free bandwidth. Since Comcast, FiOS, etc all compete based on HD offerings I would think that adding this channel is a given.

Posted by: fedssocr | January 12, 2010 10:08 AM | Report abuse

Actually after reading the press release on the Fox site it looks like I was wrong. The second channel will have different matches than the main FSC channel and it sounds like the plan is to have FSC HD and FSC+ HD channels.

Completely OT.

A 60-year old married female member of UK parliament from Northern Ireland resigned after acknowledging an affair with a 19-year old man. Her name? Mrs. Robinson, of course.

Posted by: OWNTF | January 12, 2010 10:22 AM | Report abuse

Ooof...and like that, I lose half my Premier League coverage. I've got - or had, since Imonna cancel it now - Setanta, but not HD...yet.

Algeria's ability to deal with crosses and restarts is abyssmal. And that's really good news for the USA who basically relies on counters and restarts to score.

Posted by: JoeW1 | January 12, 2010 10:27 AM | Report abuse

Being the cynic of cable and telecom...

FSC HD and FSC+ and/or FSC+HD are not headed to anything but DirecTV and maybe FiOS anytime soon.

Comcast is, I'm sure, loathe to add FSC HD to their current lineup in the 200's. TWC just had it out with Fox over the broadcast network, so I'm sure they're not looking to add it. The Cox family - who knows. RCN - not sure either but would give them probably a better shot than the big boys to add.

Basically - if you have Comcast and want the new networks. Be prepared to pepper customer service everyday for the next year and a half or switch to DirecTV.

Stick to subject matter, OWNTF. Was she Hungarian? What about the kid? Maybe half Hungarian?

I'm not surprised that Algeria, whose primarily focused on the World Cup in a few months, lost 3-0 to Malawi. But I am surprised that one of the Hawaiian islands is allowed to compete in the African Cup.

As long as we're talking about FSC...

I haven't seen this commented on, but I did see a wire piece, I think, on the NYTimes blog -- Max Bretos left FSC for a spot with ESPN News. This is good news for MLS fans. Hopefully, FSC finds someone good to replace him. They couldn't do worse.

Now, back to the topic at hand: Is Max Bretos of Hungarian descent?

"'Fox Soccer Channel is expanding into the world of HD! Introducing FSC Plus, which is scheduled to launch March 1."'

So how much more is this going to cost me? I convinced wifey and got FSC to watch United's matches and . .. conveniently, ahem, kept it going after the season was over. But if they jack the fee up, it might be gone . . .

Posted by: delantero | January 12, 2010 10:52 AM | Report abuse

Funny thing about this Setanta - FSC tango that's been going on: NONE of the articles I've read come close to addressing the questions that need answering.

Like: Who says the new FSC Plus is not an additional monthly charge?

Which providers will carry it?

Does Setanta go away immediately, freeing up channels on the carriers or not? Do they keep carrying EPL until March?

Setanta pulled all mention of the EPL a week ago, then carried EPL games last weekend. What's the status for THIS weekend?

I'm betting FSC+ is still an additional monthly charge, a la Setanta, but I'd love to be wrong...

I've always thought he was from hunger.

(Sorry, only those of us over 40 will understand that expression.)

With the way Tchani is impressing at the Combine, maybe United could offer this year's 1st rounder and next year's to move up to NY's spot? Or, with the report that Opara is planing to stay in school to finish the semester, maybe hold on to the pick, hoping he slides down to #7?

Fox is negotiating all the contracts for their cable networks as well as their broadcast network. FSC is now a rated product, so that should help to grow the in-flow of money from advertisers and keep the subscriber charge to Cable/Telcos stable. However, the launch of two new channels in HD will eat more bandwidth on the big pipe for the providers. I'm sure the carriers will want to add it - but it will likely come at an upcharge of the Sports Tiers from $5 to $10.

Oh, wait...

Algeria is even worse than Hungary, which has qualified for nothing in a long time. Seriously, if the USA has any trouble at all ripping the back of the net against that pathetic squad in the RSA, then it's back to square one. Can we get some video on Slovenia? Are they in the African Nations Cup too?

Goff guesses on twitter that Earnie Stewart and Preki are going to be admitted to the hallowed halls of the National Soccer Hall of Fame in that cosmopolitan, thriving city of international intrigue, Oneonta, New York.

Oh, to be enshrined among the HOF's cobwebs, boarded-up windows, mold and mildew, chirping crickets, and big "Space for Lease -- Cheap" banner. What an honor.

DCU Alumni news -- per Sky Sports:

"Swindon agree to cancel contract of defender Yinka Casal".

So, he's now playing defense, and he's a free agent...

Also -- to bring this around to the main thread, his Wikipedia page has this interesting tidbit: Before signing with Swindon, Casal turned down offers to play in the Hungarian Premier League.

So, he was almost Hungarian.

If you want to put indirect pressure on your video provider to pick up the new channel, go to the FSC+ site, search there to see if you have it already (zip code and provider) and fill in the form to your provider that will undoubtedly appear.

The address is http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsoccer/plus

While I could care less about the Crew - I am glad that MLS will keep a player like Schelotto. Better to have him here...even though he is 36. In regards to Eric - best of luck to him. Speak your mind!

If the Algeria team that played Malawi shows up in SA, then not only will the US be able to beat them (hello Conor Casey), England should destroy them.

I would seek a new keeper if I were Algeria's coach. And work on the defensive communication. How long is their pre-WC camp going to be? Short, I hope...
