Copa Bimbo! The mind reels...

Posted by: fedssocr | January 15, 2010 12:20 PM | Report abuse

does Liverpool have enough folks left to field a team?

wifey has duty on the Haiti task force Saturday so I can watch footy all day uninterrupted! (and before the sanctimonious ones howl, I've pulled several shifts as well)

troy have you picked up FSC yet? Thinking about watching Everton with one of the neighbor dudes unless...

DR: yep, sure do.

Pretty sure Rafa might even have to suit up for this game.

Maybe Maxi can pull off this again for Liverpool?

Is Copa Bimbo like the Lingerie Bowl of soccer?

After being released by Hertha Berlin over Germany's winter break, midfielder Bryan Arguez has signed with Traffic Sports and has been immediately transferred to Estoril FC in Portugal's second division, Liga Vitalis.

I wonder if the Aris game can be found on this weekend.

The ivory Coast-Ghana game is a good one so far

"Liga Vitalis"? This Vitalis?

The Mexican League will be a bit odd this season as teams are releasing players to the El Tri at the end of March. That's a lot of players.

AP reporter Carlos Rodriguez gives a good Clausura rundown:

Posted by: Joel_M_Lane | January 15, 2010 2:25 PM | Report abuse

"the El Tri" will sound a bit redundant to the bilinguals in the audience. Can't wait for El United's season to get started.

This must be the first football365 Friday quiz ever in which three questions have Americans playing abroad as answers:,17033,8751_5859749,00.html

Some things, like "bimbo" do not translate......

funny thing-when I explain this to my Mexican in-laws, they howl hysterically...and just think of the ad campaigns you could have selling this on English-language TV (I would hire Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears and every other brainless tart as celebrity spokespersons!!!)

Posted by: targetmedia | January 15, 2010 2:52 PM | Report abuse

My Toffees vs. City. Of course, nothing else on. Go Donovan!

To Jooseppi:

Thanks for the reminder of that Maxi Rodriguez goal in the World Cup! That has to be one of the best goals ever!

Posted by: Reignking
This is turning into quite a pipeline. Traffic brought Greg Garza, who avoided most YNT programs, to Sporting Lisbon. Since he was in Lisbon anyway he played on the US u-18s in the tournament. Both Agbossoumonde and Arguez were his teammates there and seem to be following his footsteps. Adu's experiences notwithstanding, Portugal is probably a very good place for young players to break in to the European game.

Not good news for Altidore:,19528,11714_5863259,00.html

Zaki, will pose as interesting competition. When Zaki is at his best he was an upper level EPL striker. At his worst he was below average. Here is hoping Zaki doesn't preform, and Altidore will score a goal soon.

So the beat got Tobin "Double Nutmeg" Heath? Awesome. May have just upped my game quota.

Also, really looking forward to the Everton game. He should have plenty of room to work in.

Did anyone get to see Algeria in action yesterday, via bootleg stream or otherwise?

Adu wore 11 with the MNT, no?

Posted by: troy6 | January 15, 2010 4:38 PM | Report abuse

Dear Goffino...

You understand and dissect soccer better than any Brazilian.

Welcome back. Your absence during the holidays should never be allowed again by the WP.

What about the soccer-addicts, suffering and shivering during those unbearable days?

By the way, for the benefit of your thousands of readers, BIMBO CUP is just a tournament sponsored by Bimbo bakery, now a multinational Mexican company out of Monterrey, Mexico.

They have bought several industrial bakeries in the US.

"Bimbo" is the name given to their mascot and character for many years: that of a cute little bear, adored by Mexican children.

EFERN95 thanks for clearing that up for non-spanish speakers such as myself.

Like everyone else, I am pumped for the Everton Man City game. I also am hoping Chelsea drop points.

troy Adu has worn different numbers for the Nats. Think he was wearing 10 in the last Olympics.

Posted by: DadRyan | January 15, 2010 6:06 PM | Report abuse

I did see all but the first 15 minutes or so of Algeria's game yesterday. It was an incredibly dull affair, with neither side creating much of anything except for Algeria's goal (a header off a poorly defended free kick).
