D.C. United news & notes

*Goalkeeper Troy Perkins and forward Chris Pontius have been recalled for U.S. national team training camp starting next week in Southern California ahead of the Feb. 24 friendly against El Salvador in Tampa, the Insider has learned. They will miss most of the second phase of D.C. United preseason in Bradenton, Fla., which includes friendlies against MLS clubs, the U.S. under-17 squad and a college team. Both players were at U.S. camp in January, with Perkins starting and Pontius not making the game-day roster against Honduras.

*Midfielder Danny Szetela tweaked a knee in training Tuesday and had an MRI exam to check for possible damage. Team officials expect to learn the prognosis Thursday.

Much more.....

*Defender Julius James, who had shoulder surgery in November, is participating in fitness activities but must avoid contact until March 1 or so.

*Newly acquired forward Adam Cristman is not expected to join the team until next week.

*Besides Bradenton, Charleston and Washington, DCU seems likely to spend a week in Mexico for training and a friendly in early March.

*How close did Perkins come to joining the expansion Philadelphia Union after leaving Norway? With the No. 1 position in the allocation order, Union had the first option to claim a returning national team player. Washington was Perkins' first choice, and in negotiations with MLS, he listed Philadelphia as the only other team he would consent to play for.

After agreeing to terms with MLS, "Philly had 48 hours to decide if they wanted to take me, and right near the deadline, [Union Coach] Peter Nowak calls and says, 'Yeah, we are going to take you.' So that was it. I was telling everyone I was going to Philly. And then an hour later I got a call from [DCU GM] Dave Kasper saying, 'We got you.' I was like, 'Where am I going, seriously?' I really thought Peter was going to take me. We were planning for that, but they worked out the trade at the last second. The original plan was to come to D.C., so we were glad it worked out the way it did."

Dang, DCU still have a nasty injury bug...

Holy F'ing F! Already with the injuries?

He's calling Pontius back? That's cool. I thought he was dismissed from Bradley's mind after I last camp.

Not going to worry about Szetela yet.

This team needs bubble wrap. Lots and lots of bubble wrap.

Glad Chris Pontius got called up again. He'll benefit more by training with the nats than with DCU at this point, but in trying to make our national team as strong as it an be ahead of the World Cup, I expect his call up is neither here nor there since he won't really compete for a roster spot.

How much does Wicks make? I'm guessing $100k. Does DCU plan on keeping him? It would seem a waste of $$$ to keep him when they have Perkins and Kocic, who is an adequate backup.

Never mind. I just did a google search and his salary is listed last year at $42k. I guess he's safe.

52 days until United's first match!

Unless I'm counting wrong, there's a fair amount of salary cap space regardless of which keeper is dropped; but dropping Kocic would also free up an international spot.

I probably missed it earlier, but United has posted the entire 2010 schedule on its web site.

So, what does everyone think of the whole Wynalda Harkes thing?

Posted by: OWNTF | February 3, 2010 10:17 PM | Report abuse

@OWNTF re: Wynalda Harkes

This partially explains why Wynalda is such a bitter bee-atch, but not entirely. I love his entire slant that he would have had Harkes on the roster for the good of the team. What a load of crap. Seriously doubt that was his mindset back in 1998. 12 years later, maybe, but not back then IMO.

Does anyone know if those guys were tight before this all went down? Would have made it even worse....

Szetela = bust

Wow -- this is a weak crowd. Sorry, OWNTF -- it was actually funny. You made me laugh, even if someone took you seriously. It's tough to get these inside jokes over, if people don't read every thread. For example, two threads earlier, wherein Goff posted United's 2010 schedule -- the entire schedule.

Yes, you missed it, Curious.

I'm not missing Szetela. He played...what---75 minutes last year? Go out and get us a real playmaker.

Posted by: fischy | February 3, 2010 11:50 PM | Report abuse

And, yes, Nowak probably played a wicked hand of poker...

Posted by: fischy | February 3, 2010 11:51 PM | Report abuse

According to facebook, Szetela is going to have surgery.

Ugh, more injuries. On paper, our team looks woeful. We lack depth this year. I am struggling to maintain hope. Need inspiration.

read that too...

DCU did secure the right to rip on Philly endlessly for their choice of club names, both in MLS and WPS. Entering an 8-team league and a 16-team league, it seems there would be plenty of names/mascots that weren't already taken.

Nice for Troy and Chris to get more workouts with the USMNT, and continue to raise their game. And for United, it means that Kocic/Hamid get more time playing with the first team in practice, not to mention working in the new strikers. win-win.

Now we just need the snow to play nice so everyone can keep practicing (or flying) on Monday.

Not even half that: $42K. At that price, Wicks is cheap insurance, considering how poorly Kocic played in his MLS appearances last season.

Has anyone seen the full camp roster for the El Salvador match?
