Friday kickaround

*Amid scandal, John Terry is out as England's captain.

*Adding to the U.S. national team injury woes, Mexican-based midfielder Jose Francisco Torres is out for a few weeks with a hamstring ailment.

*Already sidelined for an extended period with a shoulder injury, New England goalkeeper Matt Reis underwent knee surgery. He will miss three to four months. Preston Burpo, acquired in a trade with Colorado last month, is the starter.

*Who is Columbus' mystery signing that we hinted at last week? According to Crew defender Jed Zayner's blog, it's a Colombian forward named Sergio. If you google "Sergio Colombia futbol," the first name to appear is Sergio Herrera, 28, from Deportivo Cali. Hmmm. Or it could be these guys. Awaiting word from Crew officials.

*USA vs. Mexico! Under-17s, that is. As first seen on the Insider's Twitter page, the youth squads will face one another Feb. 24 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa as the first game of a doubleheader with the USA-El Salvador senior friendly. Kickoff for the U-17s is 4:15 p.m. and USA-ES ticket holders will be allowed entry for no additional charge.

*Defender Julian Valentin, the former USA under-20 captain from Wake Forest, has signed with second-division Tampa Bay. He was under contract with Los Angeles for two injury-plagued seasons, making just one league appearance, and was on loan with second-division Cleveland last year.

*USL-2, the third division, has been approved for a 16th season by the USSF's board of directors but with only six clubs: Charleston Battery, Richmond Kickers, Harrisburg City Islanders, Pittsburgh Riverhounds, Charlotte Eagles and Real Maryland.

I hear Dempsey was making passes at Donovan's water fountain...

USMNT is cursed.

I don't understand all the hysteria about the Torres injury. All this stuff about being cursed (apologies if it's tongue in cheek and I'm missing something). It's a two week injury, I bet half the squads in the World Cup have players dealing with the same thing right about now.

Come now, on a day like this, can you blame people for snoveregging the pudding a bit?

Off topic on this interesting weather day (still just moderate rain here in this part of southern Ohio)...in the course of rebuilding my coin collection, I acquired today a set of USA94 World Cup coins -- clad half dollar, silver dollar. Nice designs.

Thanks for the 411 on Valentin. Besides being more or less a local kid, there's interest because he had a lot of promise. I wrote here recently that DCU should consider bringing him in for a trial. I hope they keep an eye on him in Tampa. The team could use a lot of midfield help.

Whats the deal with all these USMNT players getting hurt? Let's use it up now! Not in June! Adios JT! You deserve it!

@SportzNut21:

Moderate rain? Sounds more like its just a little new mist mit us.

Assuming there is proof of the alleged behavior, I am in favor of England removing Terry as captain, and kicking him off the team if Wayne Bridge is brought on to the team.

Maybe by "Colombian forward" Jed Zayner meant *Columbian forward* as in a forward from Columbus Ohio, or Columbia, Maryland.

Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66. Remember this?

@OWNTF: Still nary a flake down here in the hills of Jackson County, Ohio...

Best futbol Ad, ever! A skinny Ronaldo too . . is the airline passenger Cantona or just some random person?

The airline passenger is indeed King Eric.

@Gene -- As an American soccer fan, I'd be in favor of John Terry being dropped from the England squad, whether or not Bridge is on the team. Also, as an American fan, I'd be in favor of Wayne Bridge being brought into the team, whether or not Terry is still there.

Losing Reis and having to play Burpo? This is an excellent test of just how much difference a goalie can make. Like DCU losing Perkins and replacing him with Wells. The Revs are in rough shape right now. This might be the year they miss the playoffs -- notwithstanding Nicol's black magic.

Am I missing something? Terry is alleged to have had an affair with an ex (emphasis on the ex) girlfriend of a teammate. If she was truly an ex, the hysteria over this rises to the level of junior high school girls at their worst. Or is the girlfriend only an "ex" because of her affair with Terry?

@NoMad3, you're missing the part about this ex being Bridge's baby momma. They have a son.

@GeneWells, who's Greg Ryan?

Posted by: DadRyan | February 5, 2010 11:10 PM | Report abuse

DadRyan: Greg Ryan was the Steve Sampson of coaches of the womens national team. He made stuff up in his head just like Sampson. Just really crazy stuff like changing Hope Solo out for no reason at all.

Posted by: GeneWells | February 6, 2010 9:51 AM | Report abuse

Who's Hope Solo?
Is she related to Han?
