Figures the Goffer would beat me with the Lopez news... KC is really stockpiling those international slots, huh?

OK -- so, to reiterate my question from the other thread:

What does Curt Onalfo think of his current roster, especially the internationals, and how much does Curt Onalfo like Claudio Lopez?

9 minutes and no Lopez to United chatter??

I'm watching my final workday Setanta online match right now :-( I'll miss you dysfunctional, poorly managed Irish channel that no one else had!

Posted by: Kev29 | February 23, 2010 3:17 PM | Report abuse

Lopez? No thanks. Castillo's the left midfielder, and either Pontius or Moreno will be the withdrawn forward. We are fine at those positions. I'd much rather see effort and resources focused on the spots that don't already have a good player in place (playmaker/central midfield, center back, etc).

Posted by: Chest_Rockwell | February 23, 2010 3:22 PM | Report abuse

Those are good numbers from Lopez...didn't he start his first campaign (along with KC) on fire?

Posted by: Reignking | February 23, 2010 3:22 PM | Report abuse

MESSI! Denied by the post. Well, denied by Lehmann, who then got help from the post.

Posted by: Reignking | February 23, 2010 3:25 PM | Report abuse

Lopez would be a decent addition for depth alone.

Pontius is a second year player. I'm not quite willing to bank him for 10 goals. Cristman is mediocre. Moreno is old and slow. The Aussie is untested in MLS.

It's about the Benjamins, though. Lopez probably isn't worth what he thinks he is.

Posted by: delantero | February 23, 2010 3:28 PM | Report abuse

Not sure why we would throw out one 35 year old Argentine mid in favor of another.

Posted by: OWNTF | February 23, 2010 3:31 PM | Report abuse

Hmm.... Lopez free????

I wouldnt mind trying him up front with Allsopp and jaime behind the 2 forwards, if pontius needs a rest or something like that.

He was signed over for cheap too with Kansas City right?

I feel bad, what a way to shaft him, he took a HUGE pay cut to stay in Kansas, last season, and they repay him by cutting him. What an A-Hole move!

Ibrahimovic equalizes for Barca. Shambolic defending. He was all alone near the top of the six. His first shot came off the keeper and he slotted the rebound in. The announcer who said that Henry would come in for underperforming Ibrahimovic is singing a different tune.

Your May 1 doubleheader ticket will be good for both the Freedom game and the 90 minutes of Eerie Lockout Silence.

Seems about right on the Gil deal. Not giving too much for a player who probably won't see the pitch for 2 years. I seem to remember another youth prodigy who wasn't ready for prime time at 16.

BTW, is Freddy still the youngest to sign with the league?

Is that really the Mercedes Benz stadium in Stuttgart? Are the seat price increments C, E, and S?

Posted by: I-270Exit1 | February 23, 2010 4:07 PM | Report abuse

I am pro anything that gets the low salaries up for people having to have a 2nd job to pay the rent in someone's basement.

Free agency? Eh.

Nice flying karate kick by Lehmann...good thing Puyol didn't take offense. It has been quite a professional game.

Posted by: Reignking | February 23, 2010 4:14 PM | Report abuse

Antonio Valencia is annihilating Spector on the right - set up the first and second Rooney goals. Nil-Two, early in the second half.

Give Spector his due - nice tackle breaks up a certain third Utd goal.

Posted by: Kev29 | February 23, 2010 4:20 PM | Report abuse

Messi fouled...intentional crap like that should be a red. Then the Stuttgart player lies on the ground acting that he is injured. Well, the first 90 had been played professionally.

Maybe West Ham should put Phil Spector on Valencia. He can really shut people down . . . .

Posted by: OWNTF | February 23, 2010 4:50 PM | Report abuse

Please say "No" to Claudio Lopez as a DCU central midfielder quick fix. #99 fills our quota of 'experienced veteran talent/leadership'. Does anyone think Jaime can play a primary role at his age? He is truly gifted as a creator and goal scorer but his time on the pitch will be as a super sub. DCU still needs the dominate central defender and a proven leader/organizer in the midfield who will deliver 8 critical goals & 10 assists. El Diablo II where are you...

Posted by: Zipfutbol | February 23, 2010 4:59 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Rooney will run out of goals before South Africa, right? He can't keep scoring like this for another three and a half months, can he? He'll dry up on June 12, no worries...

:/

Posted by: sec133row5 | February 23, 2010 5:02 PM | Report abuse

Stuttgart was so close.....oh well, hopefully someone will get them next round cause Barca won't blow an away goal advantage. Then again they certainly won't tie 0-0 so the away goal doesn't really mean all that much.

=====================

My first job paid $14,100 (1987). My second job paid $14,700 (1988). As I got experience and worked hard, I made more. In the meantime, I delivered pizzas on the side. I didn't like making just $14k a year, so I worked to move up.

I believe we refer to this as "life."

Why should unproven, fresh-out-of-college soccer players have it different?

In response to Kev29's plea to give Spector his due, here goes: He absolutely was not at fault on ManU's 3rd goal.

Can we hope that Spector will use this game as a learning experience -- about keeping your responsibilities and not worrying so much about taking on others? You're the left back, Jon. Not the CB or the LM. Don't let guys get around you and don't lose your position following guys into the middle.

Ted Leonsis via Lincoln Holdings has expressed in DCU but he has qualified it with a requirement for an approved (city, county, state) soccer only stadium plan & location; & he has met w/MD Stadium Authority. His father/family members played futbol for the Greek Americans in NYC when the family lived in Lowell, MA in old GASL. He has a bit of soccer blood. Remember he produced the documentary "Kicking It" by Susan Koch about the 2006 Homeless World Cup. Stadium logistics/deal is the key to just about everything that ails the DCU franchise right now. It fits in to the Lincoln Holdings portfolio as it addresses a need for an outdoor venue for T. Leonsis entertainment empire.

==================

Because we've fetishized professional athletes. Pretty recent development too.

If you want to empathize with the underpaid in our society, you have to move pretty far down the list to get to MLS players. Personally I'd start with the members of the armed services, but that's only one of many possibilities.

Zip -- where do you come by your information about the release of the Maryland Stadium Authority report and any details about Lincoln Holdings' supposed interest in DC United? There's nothing on the web about either.

FSPlus is designed to be a standalone premium extension; live (and tape-delayed) EPL, FA Cup, Champions League Coca Cola League, Serie A. Think Setanta, with a little less Scottish League emphasis.

Last I read, both FSC and FSPlus will be broadcast on HD at some point.

FSC HD will simulcast the main FSC offerings - some of which in HD.

FS+ will be a premium channel supplementing FSC, but will also show HD content.

I think

The MD Stadium Authority intel comes from former authority leadership w/active access and relationships to leverage; plus freedom of information offers dialogue around their soccer stadium and WC+international soccer strategy. MD stadium authority is very bullish on soccer right now and would welcome an opportunity to capture "United" to further showcase committment to the game. There are many influential and interested parties in Balt., i.e. 1st Mariner Bank leadership & Legg Mason leadership which has a large international client base.
Constellation Energy is also a player in the "Bring Soccer to Baltimore" sweepstakes. MD Stadium Authority wants an indoor (NCAA hoops) Baltimore Arena 21K state of the art but it won't happen - lack of funding & accessable real estate. An outdoor Baltimore Soccer/LAX/Concert stadium seating 18K is less expensive and offers an immediate permanent tenant DCU... Baltimore Bays Youth SC are looking for home. S. Goff just needs to reach out and build a relationship in the authority and they would offer up insight.

@OWNTF -- The city is anxious to push the Westport development forward, and the developers are excited about having a marquee-type destination that would convince doubters and bring other new tenants. So, I would imagine a public/private partnership (state, city and developers), with the team as a tenant.

I said it yesterday and will again now, RSL was the best place for Gil. Good for him, very interested to watch him and his development.

My next decleration: Hope Solo is the only one left that can save MLS from a work stoppage.

Too much ado about Pontius who had his mments last year, but lacked consistency. This guy needs to visualize better and play-make within his capacity in order to contribute to the team.

Posted by: juke2 | February 23, 2010 8:25 PM | Report abuse

I'd love Lopez for DC. He is skillful, passionate, quick (although not as much as he used to be), and smart. I'd consider him a rich man's Fred.

Posted by: Dancy1 | February 23, 2010 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Only the MLS would risk a strike over free agency for proven players but let 14 and 16 year olds play wherever they want.

Posted by: LloydHeilbrunn | February 23, 2010 10:58 PM | Report abuse

I'm wondering if RSL cut Lopez a MLS Cup bonus share afer his PK put them into the play-offs. All of RSL nation was huddled around TVs following its win vs. Colorado, watching that game. But for his PK, RSL needs a different result in the game the next day and maybe its play-off run doesn't start. While they're at it, maybe they should have cut Fred in as well for his handball.

Posted by: lgm6986 | February 24, 2010 8:12 AM | Report abuse

Lopez would be a very good pickup. He's not going to the the main scorer for you but should be able to play as a #9 next to Pontius or Allsopp. Yes he can still contribute by setting up others and there is no question he can finish if there is service.
