D.C. United wins Carolina Cup

Who exactly is this ambitious prospect Jaime Moreno? His name rings a bell. He ended up scoring five goals in three matches at the Carolina Challenge Cup, including two Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium, as D.C. United finished a perfect week and promising preseason with a 2-0 victory over the third-division Charleston Battery to secure the tournament title.

Moreno, 36, headed in Christian Castillo's corner kick in the 33rd minute and converted a penalty kick just before halftime after Santino Quaranta was taken down. In earlier matches, Moreno supplied all the scoring as United defeated Real Salt Lake, 2-1, and Toronto, 1-0. MLS's career scoring leader also had a goal in the 3-2 victory at Santos Laguna (Mexico) on March 10.

The club will return to Washington on Sunday and train all week at RFK Stadium before heading to Kansas City for next Saturday's league opener against the Wizards.

DCU LINEUP: Hamid; Najar, Pena (Rice 73rd), Jakovic, Wallace; Khumalo (Barklage 61st), Morsink, Quaranta, Castillo (Graye 73rd); Moreno (Allsopp (46th), Pontius (Cristman 61st).

Meantime, in New Jersey, the New York Red Bulls completed an undefeated preseason and christened its new stadium with a 3-1 victory over Santos (Brazil):

GOOD day. The Red Bulls game was pretty astonishing, considering how they were last year.

Excited about Najar still being brought in (we're producing talent now), and clean sheets with Pena.

This might just be an amazing season for the league.

Saw the game - on TFC TV - big shoutout to them.
After watching this last week I think that DCU has resolved most of its defensive and Defensive MF issues - well done Curt.
Unfortunately the attacking MF and Forwards are dead in the water. Obviously with the exception of Jaime. There was no creativity at all - none through three games. Finishing was absent. Is Allsopp under contract or a trialist - please let him go, as big as he is he couldn't even win an airball when he wasn't being challenged....Pontius didn't impact at all, which is worrying, Barklage is not living up to expectations, and SQ just looks lost out there.
Andy Najar looked promising, Castillo, Christman and Pena looked good.
The one-touch passing looked much better than last season, so the ball was moved quickly and efficiently and possession maintained.
The D looks good and as they meld through the early games will get better still.
Overall they had a good series in SC and deserved the cup (Vamos United)

One question. Has Jaime peeked to early?

6 days until United's first match!

Who knew Castillo's biggest asset for the team might be corners? DCU has been awful at them for years, and I think DCU scored on two in three games?

londonboy,

WAY too early to start shoveling dirt on the attacking midfield and forward positions. Allsopp will be just fine for United this season. Saw him in person on Wednesday and his activity up top will be a breath of fresh air for United. He will be a handful.

Santino playing in that role so far has drawn a penalty, had a few assists and has missed two sitters (not great, but at least in position to score goals) in his few appearances. Not quite sure what you're expecting. Plus, he's given the team what they have also needed from that position for years, the ability to get back and defend too. MLS has changed and you can't afford luxuries like Marco and Christan anymore who's sole responsibility is to attack and leave gaping holes in the midfield.

As for solving the defensive midfield problem, i guess you haven't been watching too closely. Morsink and DiRaimando have been turnover machines and this team can't get Clyde Simms back soon enough. However, the back line has improved greatly with Juan Manuel Pena back there. He should be signed at some point this week. He will really help out.

With all that being said, there is a bit of concern of where the goals will come from aside from Jaime, but I feel as this team gets to know each other (there are a lot of new offensive players), they will start to develop some chemistry. I know this goes against pretty much any soccer fans DNA, but be patient. It will come..

Isnt Najar like 17 years old? If he's playing this much already, some euro club is going to come calling.

I cant seem to get over the fact that Moreno is still producing. I hope he lights it up all year. At some point we will have to replace him :(

We're still like ~700k under the salary cap. Maybe this is an indicator that 1-2 euro stars (Raul/Henry/Whoever) want to come after the World Cup.

A GREAT weekend for soccer in the US--DCU adds more hardware to the trophy case, no strike, new stadium in NJ looked amazing.

who cares?

Posted by: bestmick1 | March 21, 2010 9:24 AM | Report abuse

Don't you love defenders (like the guy from Santos) who are standing on their own goal line when their team is scored on, and they hold up their hand asking for offsides. Pathetic dreamers.

I'll be the first to say that I doubted Jaime's ability to produce this season . . . but 5 goals in 3 games?!! I don't care if it is pre-season, that's impressive. Let's hope he continues this form for awhile.

Pena was really impressive in person, he was the vocal leader/organizer of the defense the whole time

Adu's coach Cuper revealed he was left out of the last roster because of his training habits. He got the message, and was doing much more the next two days.

So, we have some verification of the rumors about his practicing, finally. Let's see if he plays today.

I'm surprised to see that restaurant has a printed menu. It seems like the kind of place with a chalkboard.

To be fair, former local I know back home told me about it.

Also, there was indeed a man in a Sounders jersey there last night...

That 3rd goal by Richards was a cracker. NYRB looking good and playing on a proper pitch at home? Totally disorienting.

VAMOS UNITED!!!!

ARricky

So we were watching the same games...

In response;
Allsopp may well be OK - but as yet he has not shown anything

Santino - you just verified my point, working hard, but all over the place.

Morsink and DiRaimando - agreed, but I don't expect them to be starters..and yes Simm's will add to that area of the park.

Please, don't mis-understand my point...DCU has improved, IMO the D is much better, and will help keep the scores against low, offering a better chance for the attack to win games. But my point is that right now (pre-season) we are not showing any creativity in attack or attacking MF.
My middle name is "Job" patience is not an issue. My intent was to critique the last three games (Car. Cup)and to start a discussion on where we are at this stage (pre-season)Overall we seem to be in agreement :)

Maybe it was just the You Tube feed, but seemed like pretty losy television production of the Red Bulls match. That low angle was not good for viewing either. It was kind of like watching macthes from the old Highbury.

Posted by: Wendell_Gee | March 21, 2010 2:03 PM | Report abuse

Wendell: I've seen that criticism all over the place and it makes some sense. Rbp is an old school European stadium, the roof, the intimacy, the steepness all make it a great place to see a game. But not neccesarily, alas, a great tv venue. Small, mostly enclosed stadia aren't great for tv, which loves bowls. One reason rfk remains a great place for soccer is the TV sightlines and scale. Red Bull, to their credit, seem to have taken the in person experience over the tv one.

So Who's watching the Season Opener where next weekend?

Posted by: DadRyan | March 21, 2010 4:15 PM | Report abuse

What a shame.
$700 K under the cap and we don't have a bona fide, proven center mid.
What a penny pinching management.
Do they think the fans will pay for second rate soccer?
We do have a fine keeper in POerkins. Will he ever be busy.
Congrats to the great Moreno.
But, it is a long season for older legs.

Maybe there isn't anybody of value available right now.

Wow, guess Petke took his Geritol Saturday. Guy makes Tommy Smythe look like a young whippersnapper. Has he managed to play for every MLS and USL team yet?
