D.C. United, MLS, Americans abroad

*Using reserves and non-roster players, D.C. United defeated second-division Crystal Palace, 5-2, in a scrimmage at the RFK Stadium training grounds. Adam Cristman scored in the 10th minute and Danny Allsopp connected in the 51st and 65th. Junior Da Silva, the younger brother of former DCU midfielder Fred, and trialist Drew Yates (penalty kick) contributed in the 63rd and 79th, respectively. Palace scored in the 62nd and 73rd.

DCU LINEUP: Quinn; McTavish (Graye 67th), Rice, James, Adams; Shipalane, Najar (Da Silva 61st), Yates, Khumalo (ex-DCUer Mediate 83rd); Allsopp (ex-trialist White 67th), Cristman.

*Toronto terminated the contract of forward Ali Gerba, a prolific scorer for Canada's national team who was banished from training camp last month for various issues. He arrived last June amid high expectations but scored just once in 11 appearances.

*Americans abroad:
D Jay DeMerit last 80 in Watford's 1-1 tie with West Brom
D Clarence Goodson 90 in Start's 5-3 win over Valerenga
MF Alejandro Bedoya 90 in Orebro's 1-0 win at AIK
D Frank Simek in 18, didn't play in Sheffield Wed's 1-0 loss to Bristol City

F Kenny Cooper in 18, didn't play in Plymouth's 2-0 loss to Middlesbrough

I'm liking the bold new direction the blog is going in.

"last 80" is weird. must have been a nasty injury...

Posted by: troy6 | April 5, 2010 2:01 PM | Report abuse

Hey Goff,

Any word on how old Junior De Silva is? Will United sign him?

Posted by: DonDraper | April 5, 2010 2:01 PM | Report abuse

Ouch, Vallarenga seems to be missing Troy Perkins.

Posted by: DaninFL | April 5, 2010 2:09 PM | Report abuse

DCU could totally tear up the NASL.

Posted by: -rke- | April 5, 2010 2:14 PM | Report abuse

Did Goodson play the first 90 or the last 90? How 'bout Bedoya?

You'd have thought that Guevara would have told Gerba that the new boss doesn't like anyone who doesn't obey his every word.

Maybe Gerba didn't get the memo. Or maybe Guevara didn't like him either.

Posted by: TCompton | April 5, 2010 2:32 PM | Report abuse

Re Gerba: Goff reports a contract termination, not a waiver. If "termination" means what it means in the Gilbert Arenas case, it would appear Gerba did something that went beyond simple insubordination.

Posted by: griffin1108 | April 5, 2010 2:37 PM | Report abuse

Maybe he pulled a Szetela.

Posted by: Reignking | April 5, 2010 2:47 PM | Report abuse

I think he just pulled another Ali Gerba. TFC was his 14th club change this decade. The 52 page resume may have been an indication of trouble down the road.

Posted by: csd1 | April 5, 2010 2:57 PM | Report abuse

Correction I meant in a decade. 14 clubs this year would be impressive though. At least he won't lose his health insurance. Which brings up an interesting question. What do Canadian players do with their health insurance from the MLS?

Posted by: csd1 | April 5, 2010 3:05 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Gerba just likes to travel. He'd fit right in with Free Waivers Utd.

And sorry for misspelling your screen name nairbsod

Posted by: I-270Exit1 | April 5, 2010 3:07 PM | Report abuse

At least the reserves shoot!

Maybe they can teach the starters.

Posted by: carnack | April 5, 2010 3:12 PM | Report abuse

Maybe we should play the reserves. They seem to be able to find the back of the net.

Posted by: stwasm | April 5, 2010 3:13 PM | Report abuse

"Ex-DCUer Mediate"? Is he available? I have good memories of Domenic from back when we used to win Supporters' Shields.

I know silverlight is the MLS embedded video but its really annoying everytime i open ur block up I get a pop up that says I need to install it.

DOn't want to install silverlight and don't want to stop coming to the blog. I already don't go to MLS website because its so terrible.

I signed up speicificly to complain about this. Also that regisration form really asks alot of info.

With that said Love the blog and keep up the good work!

My understanding is that Gerba is solely responsible for the loss of every "All you can eat" buffet in Ontario & Quebec.

Posted by: J_S_F | April 5, 2010 3:46 PM | Report abuse

lets get Gerba we have nothing to loose except more games.
Why is the Australian a reserve?

Posted by: TheDane1 | April 5, 2010 3:56 PM | Report abuse

Alejandro Bedoya has a very good for Örebro SK in their 1:0 win over league champions AIK in Stockholm today (where it snowed this morning). He was extremely active, especially during the first half, and had some nice touches, but was less visible in the second.
AIK had a pretty poor game, waking up only about 10 minutes before full time.

Posted by: big_spaniel | April 5, 2010 3:57 PM | Report abuse

First I've heard of Da Silva. Is he on trial?

Posted by: UnitedDemon | April 5, 2010 4:02 PM | Report abuse

Da Silva's goal was a cracker, 28 yards out, left side netting. Impressed with Najar and Cristman. Allsopp came alive in the second half, easy goals for him but there have been a number of players who couldn't score sitters for us

Posted by: knape1 | April 5, 2010 4:18 PM | Report abuse

Newcastle clinches their trip back up to the Premiership! It's estimated that this one year in the Championship may have cost the team $40 million pounds.

Will Chang must be very thankful there's no relegation in MLS.

Posted by: mbyrd28 | April 5, 2010 4:51 PM | Report abuse

Great zingers there, Goff. You must be butter, cause you are on a roll!! ;)

Posted by: SonicDeathMonkey | April 5, 2010 4:56 PM | Report abuse

In Mediate's case all you appear to have to do is try out for DC United and you are guaranteed work with them for the next 15 yrs of your life. I mean come on, the guy has never been able to cut it. I would rather give some random guy a shot from one of the local beer leagues.

Also, I think Bedoya has guaranteed himself a spot on the provisional roster, and his chances of making the final 23 improve by the day. Good luck to him. While I only have seen him play in limited time for the USMNT, he has provided a good spark and shows potential. I hope he has a birght future.

Posted by: grubbsbl | April 5, 2010 4:58 PM | Report abuse

Please, those games are so informal that reporters and interns have joined in.

Posted by: Reignking | April 5, 2010 5:21 PM | Report abuse

I know their informal. That is why I would prefer a random local guy. Maybe I am just jealous.... (probably the case)

Naaahh, they got shelled with Perkins in goal, too.

Posted by: fischy | April 5, 2010 6:31 PM | Report abuse

It was crazy with all those Philly fans, today. I thought there were a decent number of Nats fans cheering when they went ahead, but it seemed almost everyone outside of the first few infield rows were standing and cheering for Howard's home run.

Mediate was a promising young player until Ihemulu broke his leg.

I'd be interested to hear what's up with Fred's kid brother. Is he just tooling around locally, or is he hoping for a trial? If it's the latter, he's got 10 days to get a transfer certificate....

Posted by: fischy | April 5, 2010 6:46 PM | Report abuse

Just back from 10 days in Texas; the Final Four in San Antonio was a great party. But I've been out of soccer for the duration.

So, how many days until United plays?

Also, what's this about Allsopp playing today as a reserve?

I'd guess about 350 days.

Posted by: fischy | April 5, 2010 7:26 PM | Report abuse

I'm sure the question Onaflo is pondering is why play with a midfield at all...if we play a 1-10-0-0 (are you restricted to only one goalie?) we can try to hold all of our opponents to 0 and end the season as an almost .500 team, which would look so much better than finishing the season with a -876 goal differential (assuming LA stops after they score 12).

I'm sure he gave the reserves a long lecture about how soccer is not about scoring goals and if they want to be considered for the first team they should stop at once.

.

Posted by: Southeasterner | April 5, 2010 7:32 PM | Report abuse

@Southeasterner -- Only one player may be designated as goalie and can use his hands legally. However, United could position a couple of defenders on the posts to support the goalie.

Seriously -- I know everyone wants to diss the Coach, but the team's problem isn't tactics or formations. It's a complete lack of players who have the talent to be truly dangerous attacking players. Moreno has the ball skills but not the speed to be effective. Pontius has the speed and size to be effective, but not the ball skills. Etc., etc....

Posted by: tcbannon | April 5, 2010 9:07 PM | Report abuse

As far as the Caps go, this most recent edition conforms to all the others in previous years. They make some noise during the relatively meaningless regular season, and then crash out of the playoffs because they are CHOKERS, and will be CHOKERS until further notice. Further notice beaing a Stanley Cup with their names on it. Maybe they finally will win the Cup this year. But then again maybe not. It is easy to pile up regular season points and get a tin-pot "Presidents Trophy" when you play in a patsy division like the Southeast.

If that makes you mad, that is too bad. Read it and weep.

Drove back from Raleigh this morning.... Just to make the egg roll... Holy heck that was a close shave! How's everyone who's playing the Argy Bargy CL fantasy doing fielding a team of starters for this week's matches?

Reading reports that Rooney has a %40 chance of playing!?! Cesc, Ibrah, Arshavin out with injury... Pique and Puyol out on cards? What the heck is the deadline for that game anyway?

Posted by: croftonpost | April 6, 2010 6:35 AM | Report abuse

croftonpost, you failed to refute anything I said. Just waving your arms and saying I was wrong does not cut it. And it was 777 who flew off the handle, not me. I don't see you taking exception to that anywhere.

Bottom line, to hold the Caps up as trophy winners as an example for DC United to emulate, or for local DC fans to take solace in is just plain silly. The Caps have NEVER won anything, as much as I and many of us would like for it to be different.

Though it is not out of the realm of possibility for the following conversation to take place between two Caps fans after their next implosion in the playoffs:

Oh, Biff! The Caps have lost to the Penguins in the playoffs AGAIN! We were supposed to win the Cup this year!

Dear me, Tad, I know. But let's break out the champagne anyway, because this year we won The President's Trophy! That is just as good as that oversized, retro-looking Stanley Cup!

Too right, Biff! Cheers!

Mediate played becuase he is one of Kasper's Maryland butt-boys. Cirovski was in the mix for head coach largely due to this same dynamic and is in the rotation for TV color analyst for the same reasin.

Posted by: Gambrills4 | April 6, 2010 10:30 AM | Report abuse

Ron,

You are wrong because you are labeling players as chokers that didn't choke. It couldn't be anymore simple and that is basically what 777 was telling you. To call the current crop of players chokers because their predecessors may have choked is irrational (I think this point is real obvious). Further, the current crop of players were the primary contributors down in Hershey where several Calder Cups have been won recently. This group is actually comprised of players that have proven to be winners not chokers at every level they have played. I will assume that you had no idea about this but that doesn't validate your ridiculous rant. You were wrong. Read it and weep.
