Matchday: United-Union

Greetings from south Philadelphia, home of the Phillies, Eagles, Flyers, Sixers and, for a few months, the MLS expansion Union.

It's a gorgeous, breezy afternoon with thousands of supporters representing both clubs filling the parking lots. With Vice President Biden on the way for pregame festivities (no, he won't be tailgating with Sons of Ben), security is very tight (especially for troublesome media with bundles of electronics). Anticipated attendance: 30,000 to 35,000.

Kickoff: 6 p.m. ET.
TV: Fox Soccer Channel.
Announcers: Dave Johnson, Christopher Sullivan.

While D.C. United is poised to gain its first point(s) of the season, details continue to emerge about the club's proposed friendlies against European competition. We told you Friday that AC Milan might drop by RFK Stadium in late May, and now we're hearing that United is hoping to arrange matches against Glasgow Rangers in late July and Blackburn Rovers in early August. United is also tentatively set to play El Salvador's national team this summer. Club officials declined comment.

Meantime, our thoughts are with Poland in the aftermath of the plane crash that killed the president and many other national leaders. Union Coach Peter Nowak, a native of Poland, told me this morning that he was friends with Piotr Nurowski, 64, head of Poland's Olympic Committee, who died in the accident. Nowak will participate in pregame introductions but watch from an upper box. [UPDATE: For comments from Nowak, please see the continuation of this post.]

Back soon with United's lineup and reserves.
DCU LINEUP: Perkins; Talley, Jakovic, Pena, Wallace; Barklage, Morsink, Quaranta, Castillo; Pontius, Allsopp. Subs: Hamid, James, McTavish, Khumalo, Shipalane, Moreno, Cristman.

Your pregame, in-game and postgame thoughts are encouraged.

Nowak learned of the crash this morning. "I couldn't believe the names that I saw. It's a tough loss for everybody."

On his decision not to be on the sideline, he said: "When the whole country is mourning, there is only one way to pay respect, and it's not to be on the sideline. I know it's my job, but with a tragedy, it's the only way."

For United's 2005 season opener at Chivas USA, then-DCU coach Nowak wore a black arm band in memory of Polish-born Pope John Paul II, who passed away that day.

Let's hope the futball is better than the announcing will be. The now-departed Bretos was bad, but Johnson is worse.

As a guy who grew up in the 80s, my heart has been with the Polish people for a long time. Hard to remember a day sadder than this one, particularly given the historical context for that flight to Russia.

Best wishes, Piotr.

surprised we're risking Pontius, especially after what happened to Clyde in the first game. Let's hope his hammy is stronger.

P2P options for watching this match? I'm not finding it on Justin.tv.

Posted by: billindmd | April 10, 2010 6:08 PM | Report abuse

Wow. Down 1-0 inside of 5 minutes? Good thing they don't have relegation in MLS...

Posted by: freeholdsouth | April 10, 2010 6:15 PM | Report abuse

Ugh, 4 minutes in and already down.

Posted by: RedDevil1 | April 10, 2010 6:15 PM | Report abuse

Sad sad day for Poland. My condolences to all Poles.

That was some craptastic ball-watching. And if the goal weren't scored, Peña might have given up a PK.

That's a very curious comment.

Now, on to the matter at hand -- How bad is United going to be this year? '09 NYRB-type bad?

Posted by: fischy | April 10, 2010 6:18 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Section107 | April 10, 2010 6:18 PM | Report abuse

How fitting that the first goal is by ex-Sounder LeToux. But I just don't know who to root for most (actually against) in this one. Can't wait to see all the comments though. These have got to be the two whiniest fan bases in all of MLS...

Philly 3 - 1 DCU

'09 Red Bulls is looking like a possibility.

You guys reallt shouldn't post the links. If anyone wants to check out justin or myP2P or iraqgoals, etc., they can.

I love how the football lines are less visible in a stadium dedicated to an NFL team than at Crap-F-K.

Posted by: rss317 | April 10, 2010 6:23 PM | Report abuse

And now Pena hurt? Can this get any better?

Posted by: freeholdsouth | April 10, 2010 6:26 PM | Report abuse

Oy. Can Atlanta have a team yet?

Posted by: fischy | April 10, 2010 6:29 PM | Report abuse

agreed, but this game is not actually visible on the justin listings- pretty hard to find otherwise. and I am not too worried about mls being aggressive on zapping the broadcast

When is Wicks getting back? Perkins is no good.

Posted by: alan19 | April 10, 2010 6:30 PM | Report abuse

i suppose we should just be used to another year of giving up every ball in the middle. geez, we just suck balls this year. so far. no trust its gonna get any better.

Posted by: spikeman | April 10, 2010 6:39 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Section107 | April 10, 2010 6:41 PM | Report abuse

Is it gonna get worse before it gets better? We've been outscored so far 7-0 this season and give the ball away in the middle of the field too easily (agreed, @Section107)

Posted by: billindmd | April 10, 2010 6:45 PM | Report abuse

At least Barca won. Haha.

Posted by: Reignking | April 10, 2010 6:49 PM | Report abuse

This is the first time this season I have been able to see DCU play and they really look pretty bad. No midfield control. Defenders all over the place. We suck...and just as I said that, Philly scored again.

Posted by: Beckster1 | April 10, 2010 6:50 PM | Report abuse

But props to the Barra for being in full voice.

Posted by: PEddy | April 10, 2010 6:52 PM | Report abuse

At which point do we get out the "Fire Onalfo" signs? God. What mess is this parading around in DC United jerseys? Where's the midfield? Where's the ball control?

Posted by: tundey | April 10, 2010 6:53 PM | Report abuse

wow. we suck. will we score at all this season?

Posted by: fedssocr | April 10, 2010 6:53 PM | Report abuse

Does that count as a shot, Barklage?

Posted by: Reignking | April 10, 2010 6:53 PM | Report abuse

wow that was a great pass and even a great volley for a cross - had it been an actual cross to the top of the box instead of weakly right to the keeper

Posted by: Section107 | April 10, 2010 6:56 PM | Report abuse

well, don't just fire Onalfo. Kasper has to go too. He's been the one presiding over this mess for the last several years. Payne is still part owner of the club (right?) so we know he's not going anywhere.

Posted by: fedssocr | April 10, 2010 6:56 PM | Report abuse

I'm tempted to ask is a coach has ever been fired before the end of April, but the real responsibility for this stinker of a team belongs to the front office. There's no coach who could make this group of square pegs and talentless excuses for professional athletes into a decent side.

Posted by: fischy | April 10, 2010 6:56 PM | Report abuse

I think I am going to go buy a dog. So I can kick it.

Posted by: rickinashburn | April 10, 2010 6:57 PM | Report abuse

Barklage is worthless. And the fact that he's *starting* means Onalfo is a moron.

Posted by: tundey | April 10, 2010 6:57 PM | Report abuse

I am no longer watching another DCU match until many things change. One they need a stadium ASAP. Two they need to get rid of Payne and Kasper. Some talent in the midfield would be nice. Also a backline that doesn't leak goals left and right. Finally they need to learn on how to score a g&dd*mn goal! It is sad when a once proud franchise falls so far they cannot even handle an expansion team.

Posted by: no_recess | April 10, 2010 6:58 PM | Report abuse

Has Castillo done ANYTHING productive for DC in 2.5 games this season?

All I ever see him do is turn the ball over or send an errant pass.

Posted by: JPO2200 | April 10, 2010 6:58 PM | Report abuse

@ tundey

What choice does Onalfo have? There is not talent on this team other than the keeper. I am not defending his choice of starting Barklage, but there is a serious lack of talent on this roster.

Posted by: no_recess | April 10, 2010 7:00 PM | Report abuse

@fischy: the front office takes the blame all day except match day. On match day, it's the coach's job to field something that resembles a team. Who's suppose to control the midfield? Santino? That's not his forte.

Posted by: tundey | April 10, 2010 7:00 PM | Report abuse

I'm going look for a competitive pro soccer team in this area. How can I get Union games on TV in this area?

Anybody want my DCU season ticket?

Posted by: fischy | April 10, 2010 7:00 PM | Report abuse

Barklage looked like a fool on that second goal, letting Moreno turn to play a diagonal thru ball when Barklage's job is not let him turn. Next play Barklage blades Moreno, late and from behind, to pick up a yellow.

What are the center backs doing on that goal? It's not their job to keep this silly defense disorganized.

On the ball, the whole team acts like they've been coached just to "boot it."

A worthless 45-minute performance.

Posted by: hungrypug | April 10, 2010 7:00 PM | Report abuse

What is really tough to swallow is all this cap money sitting around while we field a team that has 6 or so players that couldn't start anywhere in this league. I'm not going to blame Perkins or Onalfo at this point - nothing in front of Perkins and Onalfo got a 2nd string MLS team.

Posted by: Beckster1 | April 10, 2010 7:02 PM | Report abuse

what would a new stadium do for this mess? we are on the road.....

a new stadium has nothing to do with nuthin regarding the quality of play. and doesnt make any difference in the money available to buy better players.

can we please finally just stop talking about a stadium and just focus on the show?

Posted by: Section107 | April 10, 2010 7:03 PM | Report abuse

@no_recess: Are you telling me the Union have better talent?

Posted by: tundey | April 10, 2010 7:03 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: tundey | April 10, 2010 7:00 PM
------------------------------------------------

Except that's not really Onalfo's doing. That ridiculous decision was made before Onalfo came on board. He was given a dog of a team, with no midfield, no scorers and a weak defense.

Posted by: fischy | April 10, 2010 7:04 PM | Report abuse

Hey, on the bright side if we never score, we don;t have worry about voting for the "goal of the week". :)

Posted by: tundey | April 10, 2010 7:05 PM | Report abuse

I'm with you Beckster1. Onalfo has no other options. I've never blamed the FO before and I'm speaking out of frustration, but this team is terrible. They are getting beat by a midfield led by Andrew Jacobson. The backline is till disorganized. And the offense is nowhere to be found. Pontius has done nothing but try cute crap and turn the ball over. He is trying stuff that we lambasted Emilio for last year. At some point, we need to find a rhythm and create some offense. I've seen Castillo back off of challenges too many times. We need him taking guys on and getting to that second level. We need Pontius making runs and ready to shoot. We need Allsopp ready to fire too. We also need Barklage to get comfortable on the ball and help out defensively. Beyond offense, midfield, and defense, we look pretty good.

Posted by: jsm3 | April 10, 2010 7:07 PM | Report abuse

FSC's Todd Grisham just accidentally mixed up DCU and the Red Bulls... but who can blame him? If anything we might actually be worse than they were last year. Just shoot me now.

jsm...beyond offense, midfield & defense, we look pretty good?

Um, coaching isn't very good, our front office is suspect, and we have a p.o.s. stadium that is falling apart.

I guess that leaves the fans, who are starting to fight amongst each other!

Posted by: JPO2200 | April 10, 2010 7:12 PM | Report abuse

@tundey -- Yeah, the Union has some better talent. DCU has no one like Moreno or Califf, Miglioranzi or Arrietta.

Instead of Garber criticizing the DC gov't, he should fire his salvos at the team's worthless front office.

Posted by: fischy | April 10, 2010 7:12 PM | Report abuse

The Union absolutely has better talent--starting with Fred and Jacobson playing in their natural positions.

Posted by: dcarmy | April 10, 2010 7:13 PM | Report abuse

Free Waivers United blows something massive like. This team does not look like it belongs in this league. They cannot connect for crap nor do they have any, ANY imagination on how to attack.

Posted by: ronwright | April 10, 2010 7:23 PM | Report abuse

JPO2200, them's fightin' words.

I actually think it is good that we are all frustrated. I hate that we let Jacobson go. I was against it at the time. He isn't the answer for us now, but clearly he is finding his rhythm up there. Coaching by Onalfo is curious (how is that for bing nice). But I don't know who else he can play. He was given this team. At some point, Kasper has to be held accountable.
On top of everything else, why does Pontius look so bad?

Posted by: jsm3 | April 10, 2010 7:25 PM | Report abuse

First time I've actually gotten to see DCU play and it's very, very clear that without Moreno in the game, this team is dead in the water. Quaranta can't play centrally, everyone here is correct about that. He's much better out wide. Namoff needs to come back soon. And so does Simms. Castillo was not the right signing for this team. This team needs a central midfielder and a speedy striker ASAP.

First half made my stomach churn. Then DC magically forces 2 goals and looks like they'll get a result (not to mention looks like they want to play). Then that flounder A. Moreno gets Jakovic sent off and we lose. Some of those ref calls and non-calls were ridiculous.

Why would anyone think Quaranta can play as a central MF? He doesn't have the ball skills to do that. Beats me how United expects to succeed with this roster.

This is one of the least talented DCU teams ever. I liked the earlier post, "...it takes more than bargain basement players to win anything..."

Jakovic has the worst luck. I seem to remember him being called for 2 stupid penalties last year for handball. And now this. The problem isn't Moreno diving (any scorer will do the same in that situation). The problem was that Jakovic let that ball bounce before attacking it. The last man should never do that in defense.

DC United has become a shell of its former glorious self. Like the Redskins, all we can do now is put a crap team on the field and hope we can repeat the magic of years past. What a sad state of affairs.

can someone remind me again why we got rid of gomez, fred and emilio? not sayin' that they were awesome, but why get rid of them without actually upgrading them? this team is doing what my beloved montreal expos did: get rid of all the talent, go cheap and move the team.

Perkins stock with the national team has really suffered through the first three games of the year. Can't think the Seitz' case was helped after tonight, either.

Castillo is awful. He may sell tickets but he is not up to the level of MLS. Third week in a row I will say this: We are the worst team in the league. We didn't even deserve those goals.

if montreal's baseball team ended up here, could our soccer team end up there?

The referee and his assistants did a terrible job, but this is what we get in MLS on a consistent basis. Having said that, Castillo simply isn't up to the physicality of the league. He's shying away from hard tackles which leads to frequent turnovers. I say keep Pontius and Tino out wide. I have no answers for central midfielders, and I suspect Onalfo doesn't either. Wallace simply looks lost as a left back (and I always lobbied to put him there last season instead of Burch). Maybe we slide Wallace to central midfield and put one of the rooks on the left--it can't get much worse.

I only watched the first half and Terry Vaughn is a total tool. He was the biggest Union fan in the stadium tonight. Am I the only one that wants to fight Don Garber? I would love to even get a chance to sucker punch him. He is so full of it! The officiating in this league is just absolutely unethical. Pontius was knocked down in the box from behind in the first half and no call. However if you dive you get fouls. I am not shocked because MLS officiating has always SUCKED!

Don't worry people! We're only 7 or 8 players away from really making a run at the playoffs.

Oh, and can the MLS institute some kind of standards on the width of these fields? These narrow fields are awful. I know Philly is moving into a new stadium next year, fine, but they aren't the only ones using a too narrow field.

Is Simms every coming back? He would have actually been a great addition in the back center for that game and would have taken some of the pressure off of Santino...not to mention Perkins.

Then there was the ad for MLSGear.com scrolling across the bottom of the screen, saying "Order Your's [sic] Today."

Positives:

1) We scored.
2) Jaime's goal adds to his legend.
3) Wallace got forward more often.
4) We came back from 2-0.
3) MLS allows "almost" everyone into the playoffs.

Positives:

6) Simms and Namoff will help this team immensely.

I thought James and Wallace looked pretty good today, until Wallace tried to cross the ball. (Do we have ANYONE who can cross the ball into a dangerous position?) Q's goal was nice (and deserved). Besides that, I think every player got a different playbook. They do practice together, right? Why don't they ever know where anyone else is going to run? The comeback was great, which made that third goal a heartbreaker. Ugh. Long season.
