Matchnight: D.C. United-FC Dallas

Greetings from Frisco. Was D.C. United's victory Wednesday the beginning of a renaissance or a brief interruption in a troubling season? Will FC Dallas maintain momentum after winning at in-state rival Houston three days ago? Both sides are playing their fourth match in 11 days, a stretch that began with a U.S. Open Cup meeting at RFK Stadium.

In addition to its long-term absences, United will be without Chris Pontius (hamstring), Santino Quaranta (infection), Dejan Jakovic (shoulder) and Andy Najar (ankle).

Quaranta update: He will be sidelined about two weeks, General Manager Dave Kasper said.

For the fourth time in seven league matches (and fifth out of eight overall), there is no standard TV coverage of United.

Kickoff: 9 p.m. ET.

DCU's lineup and reserves to come.....
DCU: Hamid; Graye, Talley, McTavish, Wallace; Khumalo, Morsink, Simms, Castillo; Cristman, Allsopp. Subs: Perkins, Pena, James, Barklage, King, Moreno, Emilio.

If you are able to watch, your pregame, in-game and postgame observations are encouraged in the comments section.

If Will Chang wants to make the fans happy, he will figure out how to make the fans happy. Listen up Garber, I want to watch a MLS game but I can't.

zizou1972 - try this link. I've no idea if it will work come kick off.

Ha - posting from an iPhone after a few beers is always fun. That should read " figure out how to get the game on TV."

Good to see McTavish start! Does Pena have a nagging injury?

Vamos United!

Posted by: redskinsux | May 8, 2010 8:20 PM | Report abuse

Hey Goff, How many people are in the stadium? I'm guessing like 70 tops...

Posted by: ESFan21 | May 8, 2010 8:22 PM | Report abuse

I don't recall hearing about Pena getting injured again. This is probably a function of managing his minutes after playing on Wednesday.

Direct Kick does it again. Blacked out in my area. Why can't they coordinate with Comcast, which isn't showing it either?

Posted by: seahawkdad | May 8, 2010 9:13 PM | Report abuse

ATDHE.net not working?

It's working for me. Are you guys using Macs of something? (I've got nothing against Macs, by the way)

DC starting pretty well tonight. Similar to the last few matches.

Goal DC United.

Nope - Called back for Offsides. Very close.

Posted by: Palin-McCain2012 | May 8, 2010 9:17 PM | Report abuse

United great chance! Simms off the post! Cristman and Allsopp had a chance to break through!

Posted by: redskinsux | May 8, 2010 9:20 PM | Report abuse

OMG.

Beautiful play by DC. Lovely through ball then a flurry of shots, nothing goes in. Rebounds way out to Simms who unleashes a rocket. Rings off the side post.

Posted by: Palin-McCain2012 | May 8, 2010 9:21 PM | Report abuse

holy s.

Yeh, using a Mac. Not sure why ADHE isn't working. All I get is the rainbow bar pattern like the channel isn't online.

Posted by: tcbannon | May 8, 2010 9:21 PM | Report abuse

and Clyde rings one off the goal post! We gotta score sooner or later, right?

What are those things in the seats at Pizza Hut park?

Posted by: kris77 | May 8, 2010 9:26 PM | Report abuse

For Mac users, Safari won't work with ATDHE.net but the JustinTV link will. The ATDHE.net link will work with Firefox however. Good to know.

Point blank for Shea and he misses it.

Posted by: Reignking | May 8, 2010 9:28 PM | Report abuse

Jordan Graye is the latest DCU victim of the hamstring.... Sigh.

Posted by: mbyrd28 | May 8, 2010 9:29 PM | Report abuse

Graye hurt, James coming in. Great.

Posted by: Reignking | May 8, 2010 9:29 PM | Report abuse

Must be a Hammy. That is what we do.

Posted by: tcbannon | May 8, 2010 9:30 PM | Report abuse

grrrr

Posted by: fedssocr | May 8, 2010 9:30 PM | Report abuse

ah, for the love of pete...24th minute, Graye out with a hammy....

0-0 still, DCU looking the better of the 2 teams

How many DC Hammies can get sore?

Posted by: Kosh2 | May 8, 2010 9:35 PM | Report abuse

Nice to see Hamid coming out strong.

Posted by: tcbannon | May 8, 2010 9:35 PM | Report abuse

Castillo tends to serve up some of the weakest free kicks and crosses I have seen at this level.

Posted by: Kosh2 | May 8, 2010 9:39 PM | Report abuse

Which is weird, considering his assists in the preseason.

Posted by: Reignking | May 8, 2010 9:40 PM | Report abuse

Nice giveaway by Morsink.

Posted by: mbyrd28 | May 8, 2010 9:42 PM | Report abuse

I think more people were at the Freedom game.

Posted by: nairbsod | May 8, 2010 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Yeh, that was a build up killer.

I said this during the KC game on Wednesday - we need to score in the first 45.

Posted by: tcbannon | May 8, 2010 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Castillo does something well. Rats.

Posted by: tcbannon | May 8, 2010 9:47 PM | Report abuse

When Castillo cleans his act up teams may start to think twice about giving us direct free kicks that close to goal. Strong hit but right at Mr. Cat.

Posted by: Kosh2 | May 8, 2010 9:48 PM | Report abuse

Come on Clyde. Damn

Posted by: Truckr | May 8, 2010 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Simms should have finished.

Posted by: Kosh2 | May 8, 2010 9:50 PM | Report abuse

0-0 at the half

Posted by: Truckr | May 8, 2010 9:54 PM | Report abuse

Boyzz's technique is piss poor. Dude gives hustle but that's about it. Are you kidding me on that corner?

Posted by: Kosh2 | May 8, 2010 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Castillo should take corners and free kicks, period.

Posted by: tcbannon | May 8, 2010 9:58 PM | Report abuse

Nils at the half and DC looked - whoa, nice hug fest there...yeah - where was I? Yeah, DC had some decent control of the game. we had more and the better chances and should be up, but hey these days - at least we're not down.

Posted by: Kosh2 | May 8, 2010 9:59 PM | Report abuse

Very nice half by DC except for the lack of scoring and another injury, this time to Gray.

Castillo had a nice freekick but could be doing better. Dallas' right back Zack Loyd is the weak link we should be exploiting.

Posted by: Joel_M_Lane | May 8, 2010 10:01 PM | Report abuse

How many hammies do we rip on the daily?
Me say meeny moni, me say many many many.

Did I just hear Steve Jolley say "we have a good healthy crowd out here tonight..."?

Posted by: Kosh2 | May 8, 2010 10:11 PM | Report abuse

I think that he meant that they are all up to date on their shots.

Posted by: tcbannon | May 8, 2010 10:16 PM | Report abuse

We're lucky Cunningham is having a craptacular evening so far.

Emilio looks to be coming in.

Posted by: Joel_M_Lane | May 8, 2010 10:27 PM | Report abuse

Nah, we're still at nills, I was just angered by another Castillo flap cross/free kick or whatever that was supposed to be.

But James just saved our bacon on a Cunningham breakaway.

Posted by: Kosh2 | May 8, 2010 10:28 PM | Report abuse

Enter Emilio. Welcome back Luciano. Now you know the deal, do the business!

Posted by: Kosh2 | May 8, 2010 10:30 PM | Report abuse

What's the attendance?

Posted by: tfshea | May 8, 2010 10:32 PM | Report abuse

I saw this coming. I'm not sure if it's the mid-field or the D, but they were slicing us up right down the gut. Here we go again.

Posted by: Kosh2 | May 8, 2010 10:34 PM | Report abuse

How quickly does the second goal come? Almost 1 minute.

Posted by: tcbannon | May 8, 2010 10:34 PM | Report abuse

once again the failure to finish bites us in the butt

Posted by: fedssocr | May 8, 2010 10:35 PM | Report abuse

well they were knocking on the door; can't say that was a surprise. poor hamid is never going to get a clean sheet...

Posted by: troy6 | May 8, 2010 10:35 PM | Report abuse

Crud. Blame me for calling out Cunningham. He scores after a nice setup from Ferreira following Heath Pearce's run.

And Dallas keeps pressure on forcing a reflex save by Hamid on Avila's shot.

Posted by: Joel_M_Lane | May 8, 2010 10:35 PM | Report abuse

It's the midfield and the D, both are failing

Posted by: Truckr | May 8, 2010 10:36 PM | Report abuse

Ferrera and Avilla have uncorked our D. Maybe we need to burn the last sub on Pena?

Posted by: Kosh2 | May 8, 2010 10:36 PM | Report abuse

I would lay the blame for that last goal on Boyzzz.

Posted by: DaninFL | May 8, 2010 10:37 PM | Report abuse

Goal Cunningham

Posted by: abrown1662 | May 8, 2010 10:37 PM | Report abuse

moreno on for mctavish. 3 in the back for dc

Posted by: Truckr | May 8, 2010 10:42 PM | Report abuse

Onalfo's putting all the meat on the grill bringing in Jaime for Devon McTavish in the 77'.

Still 1-0 Dallas.

Posted by: Joel_M_Lane | May 8, 2010 10:43 PM | Report abuse

Jaime in McT off for DC.

For Dallas? Let the route 1 - from anywhere to Cunningham take FULL effect!!

Posted by: Kosh2 | May 8, 2010 10:43 PM | Report abuse

morsink off the crossbar. dang

Posted by: Truckr | May 8, 2010 10:45 PM | Report abuse

Morsink off the bar!! United looking better after Emilio, then Moreno pulls off McTavish. Playing a 3-5-1 now.

Posted by: delantero | May 8, 2010 10:45 PM | Report abuse

Dallas-1
DC - 0
post/cross bar - 2

Posted by: tcbannon | May 8, 2010 10:47 PM | Report abuse

or a 3-5-2, depending on how much defense you get out of Lucho and Jaime

Posted by: delantero | May 8, 2010 10:47 PM | Report abuse

Jamie is not doing so well

Posted by: Truckr | May 8, 2010 10:48 PM | Report abuse

I like the pressure of the 3-5-1 but what I hate is that when the team takes so long to create a chance we pull our faster players out of the position into the building attack. Then when our slower technical guys coughs it up, it's off to the races for Cunningham.

But Onalfo's gotta do what Onalfo's gotta do.

Posted by: Kosh2 | May 8, 2010 10:48 PM | Report abuse

emilio has disappeared

Posted by: Truckr | May 8, 2010 10:50 PM | Report abuse

Dang.

Posted by: wichne | May 8, 2010 10:56 PM | Report abuse

These desperately hopeful long balls are driving me nuts. And Boyzzz has looked gassed for a long time.

Posted by: DaninFL | May 8, 2010 10:56 PM | Report abuse

Did the edition of Emilio and Jamie do anything?

Posted by: tcbannon | May 8, 2010 10:58 PM | Report abuse

goodnight irene

Posted by: Truckr | May 8, 2010 10:58 PM | Report abuse

That's it. Another 3 points dropped because we never put our chances away. Dallas gets into the game and they put one of their many chances away. Oh well, whatever.

Posted by: Kosh2 | May 8, 2010 11:00 PM | Report abuse

We have no creative midfield plus our super subs are sub par.

Posted by: tcbannon | May 8, 2010 11:00 PM | Report abuse

edition? i'd say the 2006 edition did something. i'm not sure their addition tonight helped though.

Posted by: troy6 | May 8, 2010 11:01 PM | Report abuse

Hartman was clownishly bad in the Open Cup qualifier at RFK last week but his 1st half performance tonight is the main reason Dallas was able to win.

Posted by: Joel_M_Lane | May 8, 2010 11:01 PM | Report abuse

Lots and lots of over-hit balls flying to Hartman, or over the line. It's like we're fielding Mark Mosley out there sometimes. Good lord.

Still a lack of urgency on the ball, and the team seems to almost always slow down the attack, never putting the D on their heels. Are people not making the runs? Not keeping up? Or is that just how our offense rolls?

Bright side: the play, while still not great, isn't as dismal as weeks past. It felt like a tie was possible. Then again, it never quite felt like a win was possible.

Posted by: Konoha7 | May 8, 2010 11:06 PM | Report abuse

My decision to pass on Direct Kick this year I think was correct.

Posted by: Ron16 | May 8, 2010 11:16 PM | Report abuse

Feel better about this loss than in the past. This didn't feel hopeless, DC felt like the better team, more passion there than in the first 5 losses. That being said, Dallas stinks, what are we going to do against a real team? We missed Najar out there tonight. (Never thought I'd be missing a 17 year old...)
Also, who did Cunningham get by? Looked to be Tally.
Man this is a long season...

Posted by: Irrlicht | May 8, 2010 11:17 PM | Report abuse

We have subs, the super attribute? I wouldn't go that far. But we have subs.

'10 DCU = '09 NYRB Posted by: Konoha7

Silence! They'll be no singing, here.

We need to learn how to earn points on the road, at home, or on the playground with the team we hav., And we just won't buy into an 11 behind the ball philosophy. WHY? Points are points!

Plus injuries to Jakovic, Namoff, Tino, Najar, Pontius, Pena (?) limits our depth, to say the least.

Posted by: delantero | May 8, 2010 11:20 PM | Report abuse

Konoha,

no doubt DC has a won-loss record rivaling the worst teams in MLS but the team played pretty well in spite of being depleted by injury and looked like it could have won.

Of course, moral victories don't count for much in the standings.

*FATHER: Listen, lad. I've built this kingdom up from nothing. When I started here, all there was was swamp. All the kings said I was daft to build a castle in a swamp, but I built it all the same, just to show 'em. It sank into the swamp. So, I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So I built a third one. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. An' that's what your gonna get, lad -- the strongest castle in these islands.

HERBERT: But I don't want any of that -- I'd rather--

FATHER: Rather what?!

HERBERT: I'd rather... just...
[music] ...sing!

FATHER: Stop that, stop that! You're not going to do a song while I'm here.

Posted by: delantero | May 8, 2010 11:23 PM | Report abuse

Yeah we didn't suck that much tonight, but then we must consider the opponent. If we play the MLS elite we get the business. But there are signs that this depleted team may not be as bad as we think. In fact we are 1 to 2 excellent additions away from having teams respect us a bit.

Posted by: Kosh2 | May 8, 2010 11:27 PM | Report abuse

Hopefully Najar gets back quickly. Allsop and Christman make an effective tandem up top. Emilio and Jaime weren't the right choices for subs. James played very well after Graye came up lame. I would start Barklage instead of Khumalo. One spectacular save by Hamid!

Posted by: dcarmy | May 8, 2010 11:28 PM | Report abuse

this team is terrible. can't believe the smoke that was blown around this place in the preseason.

Did I just hear Steve Jolley say "we have a good healthy crowd out here tonight..."?

Posted by: Kosh2 | May 8, 2010 10:11 PM |

@Kosh2 I enjoy keeping up with the MLS attendance. I usually watch the highlights to see how empty PHP is. And it has its spots in the stands but for the most part looks bad. Jolley was right tonight. It wasn't full but it for the first time this season that it looked like a good atmosphere that these SSS can create when they don't sell out or get at 80% full. This crowd in RFK would look just a little fuller than this past Wednesday nights at RFK which wasn't to hot but it looked like a fun match to be at if you are a Dallas supporter:( I bet it was there biggest attendance of the season at PHP without even seeing the numbers yet. I heard that Castillo's presence was going to help bump their numbers and actually make some people make the 45 minute drive. Thanks Mr. Insider for your attendance reporting.
