Matchnight: D.C. United-FC Dallas
Greetings from Frisco. Was D.C. United's victory Wednesday the beginning of a renaissance or a brief interruption in a troubling season? Will FC Dallas maintain momentum after winning at in-state rival Houston three days ago? Both sides are playing their fourth match in 11 days, a stretch that began with a U.S. Open Cup meeting at RFK Stadium.
In addition to its long-term absences, United will be without Chris Pontius (hamstring), Santino Quaranta (infection), Dejan Jakovic (shoulder) and Andy Najar (ankle).
Quaranta update: He will be sidelined about two weeks, General Manager Dave Kasper said.
For the fourth time in seven league matches (and fifth out of eight overall), there is no standard TV coverage of United.
Kickoff: 9 p.m. ET.
DCU's lineup and reserves to come.....
DCU: Hamid; Graye, Talley, McTavish, Wallace; Khumalo, Morsink, Simms, Castillo; Cristman, Allsopp. Subs: Perkins, Pena, James, Barklage, King, Moreno, Emilio.
If you are able to watch, your pregame, in-game and postgame observations are encouraged in the comments section.

Hey Goff, How many people are in the stadium? I'm guessing like 70 tops...
Posted by: ESFan21 | May 8, 2010 8:22 PM | Report abuse
I don't recall hearing about Pena getting injured again. This is probably a function of managing his minutes after playing on Wednesday.

OMG.
Beautiful play by DC. Lovely through ball then a flurry of shots, nothing goes in. Rebounds way out to Simms who unleashes a rocket. Rings off the side post.

Castillo tends to serve up some of the weakest free kicks and crosses I have seen at this level.

Posted by: tcbannon | May 8, 2010 9:58 PM | Report abuse
Nils at the half and DC looked - whoa, nice hug fest there...yeah - where was I? Yeah, DC had some decent control of the game. we had more and the better chances and should be up, but hey these days - at least we're not down.
Posted by: Kosh2 | May 8, 2010 9:59 PM | Report abuse
Very nice half by DC except for the lack of scoring and another injury, this time to Gray.
Castillo had a nice freekick but could be doing better. Dallas' right back Zack Loyd is the weak link we should be exploiting.

Posted by: troy6 | May 8, 2010 10:35 PM | Report abuse
Crud. Blame me for calling out Cunningham. He scores after a nice setup from Ferreira following Heath Pearce's run.
And Dallas keeps pressure on forcing a reflex save by Hamid on Avila's shot.
Posted by: Joel_M_Lane | May 8, 2010 10:35 PM | Report abuse
It's the midfield and the D, both are failing
Posted by: Truckr | May 8, 2010 10:36 PM | Report abuse
Ferrera and Avilla have uncorked our D. Maybe we need to burn the last sub on Pena?
Posted by: Kosh2 | May 8, 2010 10:36 PM | Report abuse

Still 1-0 Dallas.

Jaime in McT off for DC.
For Dallas? Let the route 1 - from anywhere to Cunningham take FULL effect!!

morsink off the crossbar. dang
Posted by: Truckr | May 8, 2010 10:45 PM | Report abuse
Morsink off the bar!! United looking better after Emilio, then Moreno pulls off McTavish. Playing a 3-5-1 now.

Dallas-1
DC - 0
post/cross bar - 2
Posted by: tcbannon | May 8, 2010 10:47 PM | Report abuse
or a 3-5-2, depending on how much defense you get out of Lucho and Jaime
Posted by: delantero | May 8, 2010 10:47 PM | Report abuse
Jamie is not doing so well
Posted by: Truckr | May 8, 2010 10:48 PM | Report abuse
I like the pressure of the 3-5-1 but what I hate is that when the team takes so long to create a chance we pull our faster players out of the position into the building attack. Then when our slower technical guys coughs it up, it's off to the races for Cunningham.
But Onalfo's gotta do what Onalfo's gotta do.

That's it. Another 3 points dropped because we never put our chances away. Dallas gets into the game and they put one of their many chances away. Oh well, whatever.
Posted by: Kosh2 | May 8, 2010 11:00 PM | Report abuse
We have no creative midfield plus our super subs are sub par.
Posted by: tcbannon | May 8, 2010 11:00 PM | Report abuse
edition? i'd say the 2006 edition did something. i'm not sure their addition tonight helped though.
Posted by: troy6 | May 8, 2010 11:01 PM | Report abuse
Hartman was clownishly bad in the Open Cup qualifier at RFK last week but his 1st half performance tonight is the main reason Dallas was able to win.
Posted by: Joel_M_Lane | May 8, 2010 11:01 PM | Report abuse
Lots and lots of over-hit balls flying to Hartman, or over the line. It's like we're fielding Mark Mosley out there sometimes. Good lord.
Still a lack of urgency on the ball, and the team seems to almost always slow down the attack, never putting the D on their heels. Are people not making the runs? Not keeping up? Or is that just how our offense rolls?
Bright side: the play, while still not great, isn't as dismal as weeks past. It felt like a tie was possible. Then again, it never quite felt like a win was possible.

Feel better about this loss than in the past. This didn't feel hopeless, DC felt like the better team, more passion there than in the first 5 losses. That being said, Dallas stinks, what are we going to do against a real team? We missed Najar out there tonight. (Never thought I'd be missing a 17 year old...)
Also, who did Cunningham get by? Looked to be Tally.
Man this is a long season...

Silence! They'll be no singing, here.
We need to learn how to earn points on the road, at home, or on the playground with the team we hav., And we just won't buy into an 11 behind the ball philosophy. WHY? Points are points!
Plus injuries to Jakovic, Namoff, Tino, Najar, Pontius, Pena (?) limits our depth, to say the least.
Posted by: delantero | May 8, 2010 11:20 PM | Report abuse
Konoha,
no doubt DC has a won-loss record rivaling the worst teams in MLS but the team played pretty well in spite of being depleted by injury and looked like it could have won.
Of course, moral victories don't count for much in the standings.

*FATHER: Listen, lad. I've built this kingdom up from nothing. When I started here, all there was was swamp. All the kings said I was daft to build a castle in a swamp, but I built it all the same, just to show 'em. It sank into the swamp. So, I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So I built a third one. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. An' that's what your gonna get, lad -- the strongest castle in these islands.
HERBERT: But I don't want any of that -- I'd rather--
FATHER: Rather what?!
HERBERT: I'd rather... just...
[music] ...sing!
FATHER: Stop that, stop that! You're not going to do a song while I'm here.
Posted by: delantero | May 8, 2010 11:23 PM | Report abuse
Yeah we didn't suck that much tonight, but then we must consider the opponent. If we play the MLS elite we get the business. But there are signs that this depleted team may not be as bad as we think. In fact we are 1 to 2 excellent additions away from having teams respect us a bit.
Posted by: Kosh2 | May 8, 2010 11:27 PM | Report abuse
Hopefully Najar gets back quickly. Allsop and Christman make an effective tandem up top. Emilio and Jaime weren't the right choices for subs. James played very well after Graye came up lame. I would start Barklage instead of Khumalo. One spectacular save by Hamid!

@Kosh2 I enjoy keeping up with the MLS attendance. I usually watch the highlights to see how empty PHP is. And it has its spots in the stands but for the most part looks bad. Jolley was right tonight. It wasn't full but it for the first time this season that it looked like a good atmosphere that these SSS can create when they don't sell out or get at 80% full. This crowd in RFK would look just a little fuller than this past Wednesday nights at RFK which wasn't to hot but it looked like a fun match to be at if you are a Dallas supporter:( I bet it was there biggest attendance of the season at PHP without even seeing the numbers yet. I heard that Castillo's presence was going to help bump their numbers and actually make some people make the 45 minute drive. Thanks Mr. Insider for your attendance reporting.
