Enjoy the weekend and the upcoming work experience.

I wonder if Bayern will be among the suitors for Donovan this summer. Donovan and Robben on opposite flanks would be cool, if they lose Ribery.

Posted by: OWNTF | May 22, 2010 10:32 AM | Report abuse

@OWNTF - Didn't Ribery just re-up with the Stars of the South? I thought I heard that from somewhere. Plus Donovan does not like Germany. I know he's been talking about being a more mature and better player but I still don't think he likes Germany. But then again $$$ could make anyone adapt to almost anything.

Posted by: tcbannon | May 22, 2010 8:48 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: CYork1 | May 22, 2010 8:48 PM | Report abuse

Nightmare? Castillo has sucked since he put on a DC United uniform. Not one of his passes have connected tonight, whiffed on an easy shot and then again on an easy header.

I hope Kasper and Payne are enjoying all those new fans Castillo is bringing in because he sure is not performing on the field.

Yep DCU is a 3 point ATM for the rest of the league. Houston played at about half speed/effort, especially once they were up 2.

There just are not enough bright spots on this team to make this product worth watching. Wake me when the summer transfer market opens. At least something interesting COULD happen then.

Posted by: freeholdsouth | May 22, 2010 10:39 PM | Report abuse

@troy -- Lindsey was subpar I thought. And I know you are a Rapinoe fan and I agree she is skillful and creative. But her problem was evident in this game. She comes on at 65 or 70 with a 4 goal lead and immediately she is lunging in both feet up on Kovalenko style tackles. She's really a fairly dirty player. I'd like her a lot more if she could lay off that stuff.

The reffing in this game was horrible. The PK given to the US was a joke and completely changed the game.

Hope Solo and Nadine Angerer are unbelievable.

Can someone please cut LePeilbet's hair? Is she trying to look like Sasha Kjlestan or what?

I like Ali Krieger's chances of returning to Deutschland in a USA jersey in 2011. Looks like a good call by her not to return to WPS. Unfortunately for we Freedom fans.

There is so much suck to describe DC United I just don't know where to start. I have to say that Pena, Talley, Morsink, Castillo, Allsopp, and Christman would not start for any other team in the league, but they start here. No other team in the league would have hired Onalfo, he wasn't even DC United's first choice, yet he coaches here...

DC United is now the area's worst franchise. Amazingly, it only took two and a half years to destroy a once great franchise. Even the Wizards have more hope now.

Posted by: soccerman | May 23, 2010 12:30 AM | Report abuse

I would have to vote for Castillo as MOM if, by MOM I mean Monstrosity of Match. Pena was not much better. Nor was Jaime. Or Wallace. Or Allsopp. Watching this team is like poking yourself in the eye.

Posted by: wichne | May 23, 2010 12:48 AM | Report abuse

I thought bizarre and inexplicable line-up changes were a thing of the past? Christman starting at right mid tonight? Why? Is every single one of our other midfield options hurt? Or is it, well, we decided to just start Moreno for the heck of it, so let's put Christman our wide?

I've got to say, the Pena/Talley pairing in central defense has got to be the worst pairing in the world -- two old, slow, non-physical defenders who don't seem to know how to mark tightly = lots of easy goals from the opposition like the second goal today (or even the first goal today -- I mean, you've got to love Talley's desperate from behind poke towards the ball after he falls to the ground behind the attacking player as if he did something world class).

I feel bad for Perkins. He played a good game and made several nice saves (he might have been able to get his hand on that first goal if he was just a tad bit quicker to react, but that strike was a bit lucky and I won't fault him for that). This game could have easily ended 5 or 6-nil.

The attacking players didn't finish their runs and seemed like they didn't even want to play.

All this to say is that this season is done -- unless the FO signs 5 or 6 of the "right" type of players (and I mean, starters to replace a starting center back, replacing 3 of our 4 current starting midfielders and a new striker) in the summer signing period, DCU is going to end up as having the worst season ever of any club in MLS history.

Have faith everyone, we're only 6 starters and a proper coach and a competent front office away from competing again!

----------

Nah, they're fighting it out with Peter Angelos and the O's for that dubious honor.

And yet, I root for both.

Here's how bad DCU is this year. Tonight I could've stayed home and watched the game or I could've gone and seen MacGruber. I went and saw MacGruber. Yes, I picked a mediocre movie to go see over my beloved soccer franchise. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

With that said, I did love the Upper Decker-line in the movie.

Oh, and yes, there is no Yuengling out here in CA but that still doesn't mean I downed that stuff by the case while I still lived back east.

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | May 23, 2010 2:34 AM | Report abuse

Two observations:

1) At Seattle, attendance was 35,953...up against the Champions League Final! I guess their DVRs were all tuned to Fox after all.

2) DCU has 4 goals in 9 league games! There are 10 PLAYERS that have scored 4 or more goals in the league so far...and that's not counting the ones with own-goals.

from AP

"U.S. coach Bob Bradley revealed Saturday that captain Carlos Bocanegra underwent hernia surgery before reporting to World Cup training camp."

Posted by: OWNTF | May 23, 2010 9:09 AM | Report abuse

@Ron16 - you are so right. Teams do get to relax with us turn it on for a few min and walk away with all the points. My math was completely wrong. Here let me take a betetr crack at it...

DC United

@soccerman - great point on Seattle. You gotta respect those fans and their love and devotion for that frustrating team. The Seattle fans make our leage look great. When the other North West teams come on line next year, we might see some of the best atmospheres this league has ever seen.

@alan19 - you are spot on with Perkins. His supporters always point to the D that's in front of him, completely ignoring the fact that Hamid plays with the same D. For me the difference is Hamid is vocal and aggressive. You hear him commanding his D and attacking the ball. Perkins? He is quiet as heck but bests Hamid in the "I just crapped the bed" look when picking the ball out of the net.

Once again, the nostalgia for past players comes back to bite us in the butt. If the FO knew they were not going to spash the cash then they should have taken the draft more seriously. Not trying to be all "hind-sight" here but the FO had to have a strong sense of what type of team they wanted to build. So in this case they threw away draft picks like Monopoly money and made strange deals to get back or retain blasts from the past.

Posted by: Kosh2 | May 23, 2010 9:18 AM | Report abuse

Shoot it ate my math. Let's try that one more time... (oh, see get why it did that now. Perhaps it's best if I write it in English this time)

I think it's very short sighted to criticize Perkins for last evening's very predictable debacle.

He saw sixteen (16!) shot's, 9 on goal. He was fine, despite being exceptionally busy.

The very best, healthy line up this team can put on the field right now is just not capable of scoring, defending and winning games. No matter who the coach is.

"Nah, they're fighting it out with Peter Angelos and the O's for that dubious honor."

First of all, the Baltimore Orioles are a Baltimore team. They are not a local team. So no one here gives a sh*t about your Baltimore belly aching.

Second, there isn't a single team in the country, from MLS through the other four major pro leagues in worse shape than United. And I don't think it's even close. At least the Baltimore Orioles of Baltimore have an excellent stadium, MLB revenues and a few decent prospects.

DC United has no team, no money, no stadium, no plan, no management, one or two decent young players and a nice guy investor who must be wondering what on earth he got himself into.

Payne and Kaspar = trash. They have destroyed this team, top to bottom. Why did I even buy half season tickets to this garbage? I'm such a sucker.

blow it out your rear end kev. for plenty of people in the DC-metro area the O's are a "local" team.

Anyone following the NY vs Juventus friendly? NY is up 2-0 and isn't playing bad at all. The goals were actually pretty good ones, build up and everthing. Please AC don't kill us...

Re. that link to the Maessner article way above. Can someone who knows the front office translate that? Apparently Maessner didn't like the role change for Ashton? Why?

And apparently he's leaving without another job lined up??? Ouch. This is not a guy who socked away a million in his playing career, I'm assuming.

I found this on the Post Web site. Is this what appeared in the dead-tree Post this morning? (I buy the early edition of the Sunday paper on Saturday, so I wouldn't know.) I guess this event wasn't worth sending Tenorio, or even engaging a stringer.

Note to Curt Onalfo: Park the bus and try to get a point from the rest of the games this season.

+1, I am a native Washingtonian and a lifelong O's fan. They were the only game in the area for more than three decades. I can't change allegiances just because another team comes to town. Having said that, Kev was right. DCU is in worse shape and as he said it ain't even close. Go O's and Vamos United!
