The first thing that stands out to me is the elimination of the depressing base salaries that we used to see on this list. Granted, $40k is no fortune when you're trying to live in this area - but it's certainly better than those salaries in the teens from previous seasons. Assuming this was in the new labor deal.

I'm outraged first!

By nothing in particular...it's not polite to talk about your salary...

Poor Carey Talley not making 6-figures but coming oh-so-close - $4 away, in fact.

Well advertised on Craigslist by his agent - avoided the $100,000 sticker shock!

ha, agreed on Carey Talley. Imagine him trying to hit on a ladies at the bar. "Hey babe, I'm only $4 away from 6 figures a year"

For some reason I was thinking we had more space than we do...

Posted by: swampdogoh | June 14, 2010 4:16 PM | Report abuse

to me there are some good deals, some bad deals.

not bad, still turns out to be $2,393,406 before guarantee, and $2,590,784 after. So we're under the a little under $200,000 below the $2.55 million cap with Emilio which we don't need and somehow he is the highest paid on the team. And without him we are at $2,140,073 so we have about $400,000 to burn in the transfer window. This isn't even counting in the season ending injuries that we should put down so we can have a full, usable squad

Posted by: SexyOffender | June 14, 2010 4:28 PM | Report abuse

I thought Emilio only had a 3 month deal. Is that what we're paying him for 3 months?! I hope not!

Posted by: joe_hill | June 14, 2010 4:30 PM | Report abuse

OK, at my own peril I will admit I don't understand the salary rules. If, as noted above, DC United is spending $2,393,406 before guarantee but LA is spending $7.55M on Donovan and Beckham alone, how is it we have only $400k left over?

Posted by: ldmay | June 14, 2010 4:33 PM | Report abuse

We're getting good value out of our $40k contingent of Cristman, King, Graye, Morsink, and Rice. And Barklage, were he not injured.

Posted by: b18bolo | June 14, 2010 4:33 PM | Report abuse

If we put Namoff on the IR for the year, we don't get any cap relief, correct?

Surprised Wallace has such a higher salary than Pontius. Guess there's a big difference between going 6th vs 7th.

Posted by: joe_hill | June 14, 2010 4:36 PM | Report abuse

Is Wallace still Generation Adidas? (or is that only for one year...?)

Posted by: Dynaformer | June 14, 2010 4:38 PM | Report abuse

There seems to be an inverse relationship between DCU player salaries and their contributions, Jackovic and Simms excluded. Many (most?) of the outstanding performances have been from guys making $40K or less, and quite few (maybe 2 or 3) from those making $105K or more.

I would LOVE to see Allsopp, Emilio, and Castillo justify their overweight salaries. I just don't think it will happen.

#DCU has signed Montenegrin mid Branko Boskovic as a DP. He should be avail 7/15 vs. SEA. More info: http://bit.ly/Boskovic

Overall, the bargains appear to outnumber the duds. Between Quinn and Namoff, there is about 200K tied up in season ending injury. Add in Burch's long term absence and Barklage's injury and we're talking over 300K in unproductive salary. That is a killer when the cap is 2.5M. Of the rest, only Castillo and Emilio jump out as complete wastes of money. Jury is out on Allsop. Jaime's deal is far less than I expected it would be.

Going into the year, I thought this DCU management group was being cheap and didn't want to spend the money for a decent side. Nope. I figured they spent about 1.8 million to put this group together. Gott give them credit. They aren't cheap. Just inept.

After this season we should drop Emilio, Perkins, Allsopp, Moreno, Namoff, Talley, and Castillo. These 7 players have not made nearly enough impact their salaries dictate. Cutting them would free up $1,258,000 towards the cap.

give all of allsopp's money to najar. and spend all of castillo's money on free beer for season ticket holders. I'm sure someone will say it isn't that simple, but I just wonder why not?

Oh boy, none of our new DPs highlights were very impressive IMHO. Maybe someone who knows more about the dude can shed some light?

One of the Soccer Insider quote's of the year. I too thought we were going ultra-cheap this year. Turns out we're still engaging in our favorite strategy of over-paying for foreign "talent" (see Castillo and Allsopp).

I was under the impression that Luis Angel Landin was a DP at Houston, yet he is listed at $120,000. Am I mistaken or did he take a paycut?

Posted by: invncbl | June 14, 2010 11:11 PM | Report abuse

My overall take from this is it blows me away how little players in MLS are paid. I know the league is growing, but it's awfully hard to attract talent with so little money.

Anyone have any idea how we stack up with other leagues on average or median salaries? 10th? 20th? I haven't clue but am curious.

Posted by: PrinceBuster21 | June 14, 2010 11:52 PM | Report abuse

Emilio,Pena and Castillo are a HUGE waste of good $$$$. There is a lot more hustle, ambition and "heart" for the badge, with the players making in the 50 to 100K range!! We should continue to reward them and quit trying to recruit the GLORY BOYS from other leagues.

Posted by: patrick18 | June 15, 2010 10:23 AM | Report abuse

Talley is probably making more than 100K all told. remember for all those guys the "guaranteed" salary is just that, what they are guaranteed at a minimum for the year, that doesn't include other bonuses and compensation that is not guaranteed (like win bonus, playing bonus, etc).

I am pretty certain Jordan Graye is not going to end the year with just $40K given he has become a starter.
