LIVE Chat: World Cup USA vs. Algeria

Huge game today, obviously, and USA Coach Bob Bradley made some interesting lineup changes, most notably inserting Jonathan Bornstein into the starting lineup.

With a win, the U.S. is in. With a tie, it's a bit mucky. A loss eliminates them.

Here's the lineup, courtesy of Goff. Let's chat starting at 9:45.

Goalkeeper: Tim Howard.

Defenders: Steve Cherundolo, Jay DeMerit, Carlos Bocanegra, Jonathan Bornstein.

Midfielders:
Landon Donovan, Michael Bradley, Maurice Edu, Clint Dempsey.

Forwards: Herculez Gomez, Jozy Altidore.

clearly NOT offsides-another officiating screwup!!!

A bad outcome for USA,
England 1 - Slovenia 0
In that case,USA must win.
I am watching both games,England is playing well and conditioned to win.

I am a supporter of not blaming the refs for results but if the US does not advance then it is on FIFA and their officials. I'm sorry no excuses about 90 minutes this time.

Another goal stolen from us again!

Posted by: carnack | June 23, 2010 10:54 AM | Report abuse

There has now been two legitimate USA goals that have been disallowed by FIFA officials. Has there been one other legitimate disallowed goal in the entire tournament? This is now four extremely questionable decisions by FIFA officials that have cost the USA goals in World Cup play since 2002. At some point the question has to be asked. Is this the result of anti-American bigotry? Are the officials letting their feelings about the USA show on the field?

Posted by: Gambrills4 | June 23, 2010 10:55 AM | Report abuse

Yeah, and apparently the crossbar of the goal we're shooting on is eight inches off the ground. Must be a conspiracy.

Posted by: Godfather_of_Goals | June 23, 2010 10:57 AM | Report abuse

Bornstein being avoided. same dangerous moments. need to capitalize. chances cant be wasted. need some luck. a two front war against belgium and mali would stretch our military too thin.

what's with Jozy Altidore!!! He is horrible. Has missed several opportunities. Kicks ball over the net and OB....pathetic

Posted by: gman1944 | June 23, 2010 10:58 AM | Report abuse

I thought Dempsey was offside. Is the goalline line view they show on ESPN's "Axis" replay real or is it a computer re-creation.

Either way, Dempsey looked closer to being even on the replay than he did in live action. Similary, the 2nd Slovenian goal against the US and Chicharrito Hernandez' goal against France looked offside at 1st glance but replays seemed to show they were legit.

Godfather,

Mock all you want. This is getting ridiculous. Has there been any other disallowed goals in the tournament that shouldn't have been disallowed other than USA goals? It's also not a ridiculous thought. Referees are human.

What's with Jozy Altidore!! Has missed several opportunities during these matches. Kicks over the net when standing alone in front of the net!! He's horrible.

Posted by: gman1944 | June 23, 2010 11:01 AM | Report abuse

OK, if these stand ant the US does not go through, keep in mind that the US yes, had a disallowed goal, but also had 96 minutes to do something about it. Kinda like blaming BIll Buckner for losing the 1986 World Series, even though he booted the ball with the score already tied 2-2 and the Red Sox had nine innings to try to do something about it.

Whether or not there is truth to the notion of anti-American sentiment, I can say unequivocally that will be the feeling of many Americans that have watched the tournament particularly those that don't usually watch the sport. If the USA does not advance then the two disallowed goals will lead to the alienation of many potentially new soccer fans and it doesn't matter if you agree with them or not. Hopefully it will not come to that but the disallowed goals may do damage to the image of soccer in this country.

I am dumbfounded with what I'm watching. The Algerians and their fans seem quite content with a tie. They need a win as well. A tie is useless to them.

I know it's just to get out of the group stage, but what an emotional high!

Posted by: teamn | June 23, 2010 12:04 PM | Report abuse

So who is the best team for us to face next; Ghana, Germany or Serbia?

I say a rematch with Germany to make right what was taken from us in 2002!

How close was this group? If it wasn't for Robert Green's gift goal, right now the US would be drawing lots with Slovenia for second place!

Posted by: DJC88 | June 23, 2010 12:15 PM | Report abuse

Green's gift almost makes up for goals taken away by idiot refs.
I think US played well offensively just unlucky on two shots and Algeria GK played his a-- off

===========

If you're going to invoke "ifs," then I'll invoke the two disallowed goals which would have given us 6 points and won the group anyway.
