Spain's looking good...

Posted by: Rand-al-Thor | June 21, 2010 2:39 PM | Report abuse

I don't know whether anyone has yet posted a link to this piece in today's paper:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/06/20/AR2010062002997.html

It sounds as if the USMNT has almost no chance to get Najar, even if someone finds him an American wife ASAP.

Speaking of which, I believe we Yanks should be regarding the HondureƱos as sentimental favorites, even if their chances against Spain are bleak at best.

This is the second article with Castillo's byline in as many days (the first being a report on Satueday's affair at Estadio RFK). What is his background?

Posted by: universityandpark | June 21, 2010 2:45 PM | Report abuse

That was very, very impressive.

Posted by: Rand-al-Thor | June 21, 2010 2:48 PM | Report abuse

Caught the first 15. You could tell that Villa was on -- and Navas? Emerging talent, that's for sure.

Posted by: Reignking | June 21, 2010 2:54 PM | Report abuse

The article about Najar, or David Villa's hot knife through'a stick of butter impersonation? ;)

Posted by: DadRyan | June 21, 2010 2:55 PM | Report abuse

Villa!

But I'm trying not to give anything away to those recording for tonight...

Posted by: Rand-al-Thor | June 21, 2010 3:05 PM | Report abuse

The ball is in Spain's half for maybe the second time thie match.

Villa otra vez!

Posted by: I-270Exit1 | June 21, 2010 3:38 PM | Report abuse

Ok, I'm killing it in fantasy this round, as well.

Posted by: Reignking | June 21, 2010 3:38 PM | Report abuse

I'm watching this match at the American Cafe at Landmark Mall in Alexandria. Places where happy hour starts at 3:00 p.m. are tailor-made for these afternoon games.

Villa taking the PK for the hat trick...

"I'm gonna get a hat-trick."
"I'm gonna get a hat-trick."
"I'm gonna get a hat-trick."
Ding-dangit!

D'oh!

Posted by: Reignking | June 21, 2010 3:50 PM | Report abuse

My guess is that anyone not wanting a spoiler would stay the hell away from this thread.

LOL at David Villa's miss!

Posted by: DadRyan | June 21, 2010 3:51 PM | Report abuse

You're an exhausted Honduras midfielder. You see Xavi goe off... only to see Fabregas step on.

Ugh...

Posted by: Rand-al-Thor | June 21, 2010 3:54 PM | Report abuse

Spain needs another to have a GD of +2, equal to Chile. But their Globetrotter-like passing in the box is costing them.

Pique staring to look like a bulletin board.

Thanks -- that reminds me, I need to bring thumbtacks home.

Posted by: Reignking | June 21, 2010 4:10 PM | Report abuse

that last passing sequence looked like a practice drill, with the Honduran players in the role of cones.

Posted by: I-270Exit1 | June 21, 2010 4:17 PM | Report abuse

You would've thought Honduras were leading 6-0 the way the last few minutes went.

Domenech adds fuel to the fire, calls his players imbeciles.

Posted by: Reignking | June 21, 2010 4:45 PM | Report abuse

Honduras was smart enough to bunker for almost the entirety of the game unlike the North Koreans against Portugal earlier today.

Spain is still in serious peril of not making the 2nd Round. If they tie Chile, and the Swiss beat Honduras in their last group games the Spaniards will be going back home after just 3 games.

Posted by: Joel_M_Lane | June 21, 2010 4:47 PM | Report abuse

Domenech's quote "Go and boil your bottoms, you sons of silly persons!"

Posted by: I-270Exit1 | June 21, 2010 4:55 PM | Report abuse

Goal differential is irrelevant to Spain's chances of advancement. Spain currently stands at plus one while Chile stands at plus two. By definition, a Spanish win over Chile will mean a final GD for Spain of at least plus 2 and at most plus 1 for Chile.

GD also comes into play with the battle for first place. The Swiss, of all people, are in a position to win this group, with a zero GD and playing Honduras next.

And, yes, first place really matters here. The second place team gets to play Brazil. Although Portugal is no piece of cake either.

Posted by: jofij | June 21, 2010 5:01 PM | Report abuse

You're assuming Brazil beats Portugal...I can see Brazil taking it easy and putting chumps out there like Dani Alves to give Maicon a break.

Posted by: Reignking | June 21, 2010 5:06 PM | Report abuse

Jay Demerit's story on the US Soccer website is AMAZING, for those of you like me who don't know it.

Domenech calls the players imbeciles.
Lippi says the team didn;t follow orders to keep the ball on the ground.
Capello upset that Terry went public with dyspepsia.
Germany not playing with their usual, robotic efficiency.

Interesting WC.

Pub league to Premiership is pretty impressive, especially coming from a country where we know nothing about real football.

Posted by: I-270Exit1 | June 21, 2010 6:49 PM | Report abuse

There's no way the Brasilians will take it easy. They will feel a need to win the group I am sure. That could be a real dive-fest on Friday.

Posted by: TheWashDipsSince88 | June 21, 2010 10:00 PM | Report abuse

WTF does that mean Dips? Ronaldinho will lose his mind in LA with all the coke, trannies, and In and Out Burger up in his Donkey grill.

Have you actually seen Branko play yet? There are tons of geniuses on Big Soccer claiming the guy is class. What do you actually know about it?

Posted by: DadRyan | June 21, 2010 11:19 PM | Report abuse

hmm we yet have to see because I'm not one of those bamas who drops talent before he takes the pitch. Weren't you one of those who pushed the gallardo and Gomez moves? guess how that turned out. so I hope this new character proves me wrong. because one youtube vid doesnt cut it. and ronaldinho it could happen.

Posted by: TheWashDipsSince88 | June 22, 2010 12:15 AM | Report abuse

Wait a sec bro. Go back and check the tapes. I was AGAINST bringing back Gomez and said I'd eat my shorts wrapped in crow bacon if he came back and helped United amount to anything.

Gallardo? Shucks, I welcomed him with open arms, but when he went all pvssy cat and simply used DCU to get back to River I shunned his @rse like any and all of the spineless south american reject imports United picked up in the 08.

Don't get it all twisted my man. I'm not about to start living in fear because another nearly washed up dude who couldn't stay fit enough to make it into his national team is going to end up at the Galaxy.

Without Goff here, giving us the real 411 on our new "DP", I'm simply reserving judgement until I see something concrete.

Love you WashDips, just don't go turning into a Galaxy fan cuz you can't stop star chasing! ;)

Even that awful MLSR site doesn't have your rumor.

Posted by: Reignking | June 22, 2010 7:03 AM | Report abuse

and explain how LA could fit ANOTHER DP on their roster. Surely they don't have cap space or a DP slot available.

Posted by: fedssocr | June 22, 2010 7:10 AM | Report abuse

Cristiano Ronaldo to Chivas USA. It could happen.

See I made up a rumor too.

Last night, CSN showed the 1996 playoff game between DC and Tampa Bay (the first of the series). Final score 4-1 (Raul Diaz-Arce 3, Steve Rammel 1). I miss Eddie Pope and Jeff Agoos in central defense. Amazing to think that Ralston, Hejduk, and Moreno are still playing 14 years later.

Posted by: I-270Exit1 | June 22, 2010 7:12 AM | Report abuse

Teams can buy a third DP slot now. Beckham and Donovan only add up to two, and Donovan likely won't be around much longer

Posted by: JacobfromAtlanta-ish | June 22, 2010 7:41 AM | Report abuse

I-270 I watched parts of that game too. Everytime I watch games from back then I remember just how good DC used to be. I often forget how studded our line up really was (in MLS terms).

Posted by: grubbsbl | June 22, 2010 7:45 AM | Report abuse

With the WC on, you found time to watch more soccer?

Posted by: Reignking | June 22, 2010 7:49 AM | Report abuse

I missed the two early games and had to make up for that with the MLS archive.

Posted by: I-270Exit1 | June 22, 2010 7:54 AM | Report abuse

What else is on Monday night 7-9? As a good Insider loyalist I am only committed to Burn Notice. By the way, I definitely don't trust Jesse Porter.

Plus, I couldn't take any more highlights of Portugal v Korea DPR.

The Bachelorette! :)

A bit tougher to pick the fantasy team for this round...

Posted by: Reignking | June 22, 2010 8:42 AM | Report abuse

It's 3PM in South Africa and no Morning Kickaround yet. Where is the Steve?

Posted by: I-270Exit1 | June 22, 2010 9:01 AM | Report abuse

How much do you love the mess that this tournament is? By my quick calculations I think only 3 teams have been eliminated at this point...unless I am missing some esoteric tie-breaker.

Posted by: fedssocr | June 22, 2010 9:01 AM | Report abuse

I can only get into VHI reality TV shows.

Is anyone hoping the French players refuse to play today? I would love to see that.

Posted by: grubbsbl | June 22, 2010 9:02 AM | Report abuse

Four Four Two magazine in Britain is reporting that Patrice Evra is not in the 18 for France today.

Posted by: harkes4ever | June 22, 2010 9:08 AM | Report abuse

Let's see...Cameroon, North Korea, and?

Posted by: Reignking | June 22, 2010 9:13 AM | Report abuse

I think for some reason Honduras cannot advance....but I guess maybe if they beat the Swiss by enough goals and Spain lose to Chile it is possible.

Posted by: fedssocr | June 22, 2010 9:37 AM | Report abuse

I guess there's nothing going on in soccer today.

Posted by: Reignking | June 22, 2010 9:38 AM | Report abuse

dont get me wrong Dadryan
Im black and red since 1995. I dont care what the Galaxy does but honestly its a f***in wake up call to United. If LA is that ambitious about money and maybe titles then we should be that way. But honestly all these "players" that get brought to this team has me to believe United has been doing their scouting mission through FIFA10 before anything else.

And the rumor articles are found through a google search since I got this tweet from the Galaxy GM. I dont know who I got his tweet since im new to that but it said a BIG announcement soon. So I googled it through my yahoo and found maybe 6 articles with Ronaldinho confirmed as a new DP with a 6 million a year deal.

Posted by: TheWashDipsSince88 | June 22, 2010 9:44 AM | Report abuse

6 mil? Good luck. DCU doesn't have that money.

Posted by: Reignking | June 22, 2010 9:48 AM | Report abuse

Quick math...looks like France needs at least a 5-goal win.

I only got to see the final 30 minutes. it was really fun to see how far it has all come, though it made me feel old.

Some of the commentating highlights I caught:
-"a great move by the young defender Eddie Pope, maybe a flash of future brilliance..."
-"thats former Princeton coach Bob Bradley, who Bruce Arena brought on to help out with THE United"

How did the league ever get away with scheduling playoff games over top of world cup qualifiers? I guess since it took 15 years to get them to stop playing during the actual World Cup its not surprising.

Posted by: VTUnited | June 22, 2010 9:53 AM | Report abuse

well the rumor mill has also spurt out a possibility of the announcement simply being a friendly with Real Madrid and/or Raul signing on as the new DP... Sooo...
