World Cup Group F: Italy stumbles out vs. Slovakia, Paraguay takes first

If you had Italy going out in the first round for the first time since 1974, kudos to you. If you had Italy finishing last in its group, behind New Zealand, you are truly a seer. But that's what happened after a zany 3-2 loss to Slovakia, which will play in the round of 16. Paraguay took group first-place honors after a 0-0 draw with New Zealand.

Ok, I had Italy out...but I only had to pick the top 2. Let's just assume I had Italy last.

Greetings from round 2 to Guisseppe Rossi.

Lippi probably wishes he would have had Rossi in his selection today. Terrible play by the Italians. Inspired play by Slovakia. To quote Chris Berman, "this is why they play the game!"

DiNatale's goal was really sweet...

DiNatale's goal was sweet, but the flopping around in the goal afterwards by his teammate surely was not. For actions like that we should all be grateful to the Slovakian players.

The linked AP article about the Slovakia-Italy game is way too negative and focuses too much on the favored team's "humiliating" exit.

The latter part of the game was a classic as Italy scored 2 beautiful goals (they also gave up 2 in that stretch) had another one called back on a close offsides call and had a goal that was almost completely over the line cleared away by Martin Skrtel's knee.

Very entertaining 2nd half after Italy sleep walked thru the 1st half. Like Klinsmann said about Nigeria a couple days ago - you can't play one half of excellent soccer at the end of the Group Stage and expect it to be enough to go through to the knockout stage.

i had Italy my dreams! lots of dreams coming true this world cup. seriously, how sweet is it that England gets Germany and Mexico gets Argentina in the Round of 16 while we have a chance to exact revenge on Ghana? or that CONMEBOL might get all 5 of their teams through to the knockout rounds? or that Spain could join the ranks of homeward bound? it's been great fun so far.
