Monday kickaround: MLS conquers Manchesters, Galaxy's Omar Gonzalez, Freedom knee injury, youth title for Quaranta family, Edu's goal

*Okay, so it was midseason form against preseason form and high motivation vs. mild motivation, but Sunday was richly rewarding for MLS in friendlies against the visiting Manchester clubs. Dane Richards set up a goal and then scored the go-ahead strike on a wondrous drive from 25 yards in the New York Red Bulls' 2-1 victory over Manchester City, and the Kansas City Wizards, in front of more than 52,000 at Arrowhead Stadium, played a man down for 50-plus minutes in a 2-1 decision against Manchester United. City is headed to Atlanta to face Club America on Wednesday before confronting Inter Milan on Saturday in Baltimore, while Man U is off to Houston for the MLS All-Star Game on Wednesday night (8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2, Galavision).

*Read about defender Omar Gonzalez's rise from the University of Maryland to MLS all-star in his second season with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

*MLS is close to finalizing a deal with a U.S. under-20 national team player. A weighted lottery is expected to determine his club, with D.C. United and Kansas City holding the best odds. I can't verify the player until the contract is set, but the league has had talks with forward Omar Salgado, a Mexican-American forward from El Paso who rose through the Chivas Guadalajara youth system.

*Washington Freedom goalkeeper Erin McLeod (14 starts) has a suspected ACL tear in her right knee and is scheduled for surgery Thursday, officials from the WPS club tell the Insider. She was injured in the 84th minute of Saturday's 4-1 loss to Gold Pride. Veteran back-up Briana Scurry (concussion) is also out for the season, leaving rookie Ashlyn Harris as the top choice.

*In case you missed it, former D.C. United midfielder Rod Dyachenko is playing for Real Maryland in the third division.

*Baltimore Bays Chelsea -- coached by Brandon Quaranta, cousin of United veteran Santino Quaranta -- won the under-15 boys' national championship with a a 2-1 overtime victory over Albion White of California.

*USA midfielder Maurice Edu scores and later draws a penalty during Rangers' 2-1 friendly win over Blackburn in Sydney:

Get Well Soon Erin!

Glad we used the equivalent of two first round draft picks to ensure that Real Maryland would enjoy the services of Mr. Dyachenko ....

I hope DCU wins the lottery for the u-20 US player, especially if it is Salgado.

That is a bummer for the Freedom and Canada. Hope McLeod heals quickly. She looked so upset at the game. It was touching to see the outpouring of love for her from both her teammates and members of the Gold Pride after the game. Get well soon. (Will we see Nicci Wright in goal again? She looked awesome on Friday at the Alumni benefit game!)

McLeod is an immortal. She will heal quickly.

I don't know the WPS rules, but if McLeod will be out for the season, do they bring in two more to fill the gap? According to Wiki, Kati Jo Spisak was also let go from St. L. The WPS roster site does not show another team affiliation for her.

according to that ESPN article there won't be a weighted lottery..so I wonder if its someone else?

lots of folks seem to be jumping from the Mexican league to MLS this year - at least some bigger names. Yes, it's stil a small pool compared to the whole, but interesting nonetheless.

Just a few things: one of the reasons that the WPS might be folding is the HORRIBLE names for the teams. Hard to support a team named the Atlanta "Off" Beat, or the Boston "Heart" Breakers, the Washington Freedom... The Freedom? Really? Who came up with that? These are as bad as the WNBA names. Why don't people spend more time on making sure they have the right logos and branding? People have to realize how important that is. A name like Philadelphia Freedom comes off as lazy to me. Lacking creativity. The easy way out. Or done in a hurry. Did they call Elton John?

Alright, had to get that off my chest.

I thought Salgado was booted out of the Chivas system since he is not 100% mexican or is that someone else.

Man how many goals does ROD have against Real Maryland?
j/k I wish him luck.

dwreck1971 get your facts straight. The WPS isn't folding. The St. Louis Athletica folded. But you probably will blame their name =P

Posted by: Janescomment | July 26, 2010 12:09 PM | Report abuse

TheWashDips: It was not because he was not 100% Mexican, it was because he accepted the US U-20 team's invitation.

Something to look forward to: Rush is in concert, Sept. 19, at the former Nissan Pavilion (now Jiffy Lube Live!)

Rush is awful. Awful. I don't know how you can even look at that guy.

United's season, pretty much over . . save for the Open Cup . whoopee.

dwreck1971: What names would you suggest?

Reingking: That's why he's on the radio.

Jiffy Lube Live? The concert tickets are $80, but you're scheduled for a brake and transmission fluid flush. Your total is $1294.

He'll somehow end up with FC Dallas :( WE MUST WIN THIS LOTTERY.

Posted by: KHSpartan | July 26, 2010 12:43 PM | Report abuse

Must we? I think we have enough young average/mediocre players, I think we should focus on signing a DP. Or maybe City will loan us one of their 17,000 attackers.

On a more serious note, Harry Rednapp said he would be all for loaning some of his younger players to MLS teams, so perhaps we should be looking into that.

7th for me. Some guys from last year completely disappeared -- Egoi Martinez and Nocentini.

I think we could at least groom him at the moment. If another team got onto him, they could do the same.

First Buddle, now Edu picks up right where he left off before the World Cup (a.k.a. their summer vacation).

[sigh]

A tad off topic but just for D-Wreck:

A name like Philadelphia Freedom comes off as lazy to me. Lacking creativity. The easy way out. Or done in a hurry. Did they call Elton John?

Sir Elton was involved with the original incarnation of World Team Tennis's Philadelphia Freedoms, back in the Seventies. In fact, I seem to recall that the name of that team inspired the song, instead of the other way around.

So was Salgado the U20 or is there someone else? Goff said there'd be a lottery, but it's quite clear that Salgado will be in the 2011 Draft.
