Paul the Psychic Octopus picks Spain to win World Cup

Paul the Octopus has spoken, and he has come out for Spain in the World Cup final. No comment as of yet from Mani the Parakeet.

Washington mega-chef and Spain enthusiast Jose Andres has Paul's back, taking his brethren off the menu at all his restaurants until further notice.

Paul correctly picked Germany to defeat England, becoming a national hero and worldwide celebrity.

But then Paul picked Spain to defeat Germany in the semifinals, and public opinion of Paul in Germany took a LeBron-in-Cleveland-esque nosedive.

Hang on, the fix was in! El Pulpo went for the closest one! He never stopped to consider the relative strength of the midfields, he just grabbed the closest clam!

How can you argue with that? Perhaps DC United's Front Office Staff can lease Paul. They can use help picking among the Argentine 2nd and 3rd division players they spend months "scouting" down in Tangoland.

He made that choice pretty quickly. I wonder if this decision is written in ink?

And Jose bought a ticket for South Africa right away -- he must be on cloud nine right now.

An octopus pun? Nice. Too bad I've read that one about 8 times. Suckers.

It is a fact that octopuses are intelligent. But Europeans, of all people, believing this is really ridiculous. I am seeing a pattern here (at least in this world cup). Paul is picking the flag of the country which has more red paint on it than the other. Maybe he is going for blood. You can try to predict a Germany-China match & see what Paul picks. I bet he picks China & we all know who will actually win. Some may argue that he sat on Uruguay box for some time. But, see where he finally went. Paul is thinking that the mussel in the MORE REDDISH box is juicy :-) He may be right again for THE FINAL, but will be for the wrong reason (more blood & nothing else).

Except all evidence to the contrary says that Octopus vulgaris (Paul) is colorblind. Two separate studies showed that this species can discriminate orientation, or shapes, but can't do the same with coloration.

It more likely has to do with the orientation of shapes within the flags - the very large yellow stripe of Spain probably attracts Paul's attention better than the equally sized stripes of Germany or Holland.

For those whining about the fact he picked the closest box: Right before he picked the World Cup winner it chose the 3rd place and took him 15 minutes to choose, switching box three times.

It picked Spain because it is the OBVIOUS choice.

There is a marine biology college thesis somewhere in there for sure.

oops, accidentally posted this with the wrong article, but:

It's good you don't post anything about Mani's predictions! He originally said that Spain would win the world cup - but he also said that Spain would play the final match against Uruguay. Now suddenly he picked Holland and Singaporean media are so advertising this while conveniently neglecting that the bird was totally wrong in the first place :) Here's the photo of his original prediction:
