@RK played this match as Uruguay last night on my FIFA10 SA and that's exactly how it panned out. I scored a goal right before the half with a wonder goal from Periera and then gave up two free kick opportunities in the second half that Van Der Vaart converted.

Somebody tell me who the octopus picked while I still have time to place phone calls!

2-nil, Holland
Holland-Spain/Germany would be a whale of a final.

Octomom picked Spain.

The octopus predicted Spain in tomorrow's game.
ESPN Radio just reported that AC Milan is looking into acquiring Clint Dempsey.

They are a few days late on that rumor...

Hot goodness that was incredible.

Darn shame De Zeeuww had to take that kick in the face that would have been so much more fitting for De Jong... ;)

Vonderful gol...wow.
Tyler & Harkes didn't think that bicycle kick to the face should've been a yellow. Huh?

Ugh - if he goes anywhere, I hope it would be with Hodgson up to Liverpool.
Posted by: Kev29 | July 6, 2010 3:28 PM | Report abuse
kev: Dempsey can't. Part of Hodgson's agreement in goign to Liverpool that he couldn't poach players.

"Former American hall of famer John Harkes." Is that because the hall at Oneonta is cloaed?

Look at that, 2-1.

offside player screening the keeper and getting a touch on the ball on goal #2???

Oh cmon! I almost had called the score in 3 straight games. Boo Robben.

Great, so the final may be Netherlands vs. Spain. The two most detestable teams in this tournament with their diving and theatrics. Ugh.

3-1 Netherlands. That last goal just rescued the officiating crew. Drake and Harkes are being very kind to the officials. There is zero room for interpretation on the second goal. The offsides player was CLEARLY involved in the play which negates the new FIFA rule. Offsides, plain and simple and once more the officials in this World Cup make an atrocious decision.

=========================================
IMO, the two most detestable teams have already been eliminated, Mexico and Italy.

Gambrills, if the referee's had seen your TV angle, I'm guessing they would have called it. But they didn't, they only had real time. It all happened extremely quickly, took a deflection off a defender, and Van Pansie was at most just 'leaning' offside.
Read some of the minute by minute reports, you'll see some variation of opinions. It would have taken outstanding referee-ing to get that one right.

You think the Dutch and Spanish ply bad soccer? Are you joking?
Posted by: Reignking | July 6, 2010 4:14 PM | Report abuse
JKR,
Outstanding referee-ing is what we should expect at the World Cup. Anything less is unacceptable at this level.

The second goal is now huge. That will now be the story of the game and the complete focus of the media.

Well that certainly got interesting

Can anyone point to any refereeing decision benefiting a Latin American team in this WC? Argentina had one vs. Mexico, but we'll call that one even. Paraguay and Uruguay are out because of the linesmen. Was that shot on goal stopped with a hand when it was 3-2?

Ian Darkes and John Harkes are butchers of Spanish names. You would think Harkes growing up in Jersey would have some knowledge of accents and such. I heard Darkes earlier in the tournament try to give a little color by saying a player's nickname was Bird. He dyslexically called him Parajo instead of Parajo.

... instead of Pajaro. I guess my typing was dyslexic
Posted by: GeneWells | July 6, 2010 4:39 PM | Report abuse
Well, I've heard Spanish-speaking announcers "butchering" American names, so it works both ways.

Does anyone doubt that the second goal would have been called offside if it had been Altidore letting the ball go him off of a Donovan shot?
Posted by: mason08 | July 6, 2010 4:44 PM | Report abuse
...or Dempsey.
