U.S. national team updates, MLS signs Salgado

*The roster for the U.S. national team's friendly against Brazil on Aug. 10 at the new Meadowlands stadium is tentatively scheduled to be announced early next week. Brazil's list is expected to come out today.

With the U.S. group together for just one day of training ahead of the match, don't expect many personnel surprises. Bringing in new players and trying new combinations on extremely short notice against Brazil? Not wise. We are more likely to see newcomers (perhaps Schalke midfielder Jermaine Jones?) in proposed friendlies Oct. 9 and 13 12. The first match is close to being finalized, the second still in the works. Meantime, ticket sales for Brazil's visit have surpassed 40,000.

*Omar Salgado, a 16-year-old forward for the U.S. under-20 national team, has agreed to a contract with MLS. The Chivas Guadalajara's youth academy product will be available in the league draft in January instead of being assigned right away via a weighted lottery, like what was done with midfielder Sal Zizzo, 23, last week.

Why is the league using a different process? Zizzo was a known entity, having starred at the U-20 World Cup in 2007 and subsequently signed with German club Hanover. Few teams, however, know much about the 6-foot-4 Salgado, who has trained informally with the Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA and has never appeared in the U.S. junior program. Don't be surprised if he picks an MLS club for practice purposes and plays in the U.S. lower divisions this summer. He is currently with the U-20s in Northern Ireland for the Milk Cup.

Of all the beverages selected to brand a soccer tournament in Ireland, milk would not have been among my top 5.

any rumors about the October 9th game? The FIFA website has listed it as being against Poland in NYC for several weeks now.

Thanks for the heads up Dips... You going to enter? We were already thinking about bringing the little ones out to RFK for that match because of the early start time... You think the "food and drinks" might include some beer?

That kind of stereotyping is unacceptable. Are you drunk or did you just have a donnybrook?
