Bob Bradley's contract, Americans in transition, D.C. United news & notes, Insider live chat

*Bob Bradley's new contract with the U.S. Soccer Federation will expire Aug. 31, 2014 -- not immediately after the World Cup (like for most national team coaches) and not on Dec. 31 (the usual culmination of USSF coaching contracts).

What does this tell us? It tells us that the USSF probably annulled the remaining four months of his current deal and agreed to new terms starting tomorrow. What are those terms? Neither the USSF nor Bradley's representative, Ron Waxman, would reveal them. Don't expect the details to surface until the USSF tax records are released in the very distant future.

Using Bradley's previous deal as a guide, we could safely assume that his base salary has risen moderately.

Another angle to consider: Because Bradley doesn't make an obscene amount of money, he is more susceptible to termination before the contract expires. (The amount the federation would owe him would be substantially less than, say, England would have to compensate Fabio Capello.) Obviously, the USSF has no long-term plans to fire a coach that it just rehired, but if things do not go as well as anticipated (a poor showing at the Gold Cup, a slow start to World Cup qualifying), a change is not out of the question.

For much more.....

*U.S. defender Jay DeMerit, a World Cup starter, remains without a club after the transfer window closed in Europe today. He discussed his situation on a BBC blog. Meantime, forward Eddie Johnson will apparently remain with Fulham for the time being after a proposed loan to second-tier Queens Park Rangers didn't materialize. And Freddy Adu's agent, Richard Motzkin, confirmed that the young American will suit up for Greek club Aris again after being shopped around the continent this summer.

*D.C. United defender Dejan Jakovic has been recalled by Canada for friendlies against Peru in Toronto on Saturday and Honduras on Tuesday in Montreal. He will be available for the U.S. Open Cup semifinal Wednesday but miss the league match this weekend. Midfielder Branko Boskovic (two European Championship qualifiers for Montenegro) will be absent Wednesday and Saturday.

*Why is United utilizing the old-style goal frames at RFK Stadium after switching to the international nets? Here's the answer.

*I will join Post columnist Tracee Hamilton for a live online chat (soccer, of course) Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. ET. Use this page to submit questions in advance and follow the action.

Post holes relocated to Baltimore?

You watch. Bob will do what he did before, bring in a lot of new young talent.

Ream, Opara, Lichaj, Gonzalez, Diskerud, McInerney, Gale A-Boss, Mwanga (when available), Shea, etc

He'll bring in players like he did with Bradley, Feilhaber, Edu, Torres, Rogers, Bedoya, Bornstein, Cooper, Guzan, Davies, Altidore, Adu

And you'll hate him, but deep down you'll be glad he did it.

Hey Bennie, Jay DeMerit is available.

Just saying.........

The only ones concerned about the goals are Perkins and Hamid, who have to fish the ball out.

--------

Yeah, couple weeks ago I asked Tracy during one of her daily chats why she gets to chat every day and I literally couldn't remember the last time Goff had a live chat.

Guess the higher-ups decided it was time too.

DeMerit with no team...nobody willing to sign him?

I will ASSume that United tried to sign him and it fell through; either us rejecting him or him rejecting us.

I DEMAND that United contact DeMerit or explain why we havn't!!!

Posted by: 9Nine9 | August 31, 2010 10:58 PM | Report abuse

DeMerit wanted (wants) to stay in Europe, obviously.

And an American player of his stature can't just be grabbed by an MLS club, he'd have to be signed by the league and allocated to a club. DC would have to either be next in line for that, or basically wait for that to happen and then try to deal with whatever club claimed him. Same thing happened with Perkins.

Post holes aren't going to be re-located to Balmer any sooner than 2012. The club couldn't possibly be selling season tix at a discount if there are any plans of moving the team in the offseason. No way it'd happen mid season. You'll see.

Steve, have you been tallking "inside contract" stuff with Ahrens again?

UEFA have banned the controversial vuvuzela trumpets from all European competitions, including the Champions League, Europa League and the Euro 2012 qualifiers.

Just heard an interesting statistic on World Football Daily: Stuart Holden, playing in central midfield for Bolton, has a 96 percent pass-completion rate in the club's three Premiership matches this season.

Posted by: runningcloud | September 1, 2010 9:13 AM | Report abuse

What's Holden's QB rating?

My flight from Flagstaff lands at Reagan National at 7:05pm, can I make it to RFK for the game?

Posted by: grubbsbl | September 1, 2010 11:13 AM | Report abuse

grubbs if you take a cab I bet you could make it. you'd miss kick off even if you had excellent metro luck.

Posted by: DadRyan | September 1, 2010 11:21 AM | Report abuse

==========

I drink a lot, have a criminal record, fathered 10 kids with 12 different women. Oh, luggage, not baggage. Nevermind.

Posted by: I-270Exit1 | September 1, 2010 11:26 AM | Report abuse

This isn't the basketball blog.

Posted by: Reignking | September 1, 2010 11:28 AM | Report abuse

Yeah the way DCA works, if you have checked baggage you'll be lucky to make it by 2nd half kickoff. Otherwise, traffic that time of day, you're looking at 20 minutes by car. Metro's gotta be 45 best case.

Posted by: benonthehill | September 1, 2010 11:28 AM | Report abuse

But if you have luggage, and metro from the airport, what do you do with the bags?

Posted by: Reignking | September 1, 2010 11:31 AM | Report abuse

I-270 needed luggage for this trip:

Holden looks excellent, at least in the FSC matches I've seen him play. He's all over the field, really calm on the ball, and playing in a central midfield role. Unfortunately, since Coach JR has been given that role for life, Holden will never get to play there for the nats... which is crap.

How many Bundesliga games with M Bradley have you seen and how does he perform? I'm just asking for a point of reference.

Posted by: I-270Exit1 | September 1, 2010 12:39 PM | Report abuse

Unbelievable! Hiring the boring Bob Bradley for another 4 years. And they could have had Klinsmann. USSF and Gulati are complete idiots. I will no longer follow US soccer.
