Matchnight: D.C. United vs. Columbus Crew

Greetings from RFK Stadium.

D.C. United vs. Columbus Crew
Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. ET.
TV: Fox Soccer Channel.

A few newsworthy items to share:

*Because of injuries and international duty, United will have only five reserves available. Chris Pontius is not in uniform because of a continuing hamstring issue.

*Midfielder Branko Boskovic, the designated player from Montenegro, has a guaranteed contract through the 2011 season. Argentine forward Pablo Hernandez is set through the middle of next season. At that point, or earlier, United must decide whether to exercise an option, purchase him outright or formulate a new option.

*Club president Kevin Payne says that the process of identifying a location for a new stadium continues in Washington, Northern Virginia and Baltimore. The Maryland Stadium Authority's feasibility study, the first of many steps if a Charm City project goes forward, is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks.

"We continue to work within the District. It's not an issue that is really going to become public for a while yet because it's not ready to. We are spending time with a couple of different developers that are well-respected. We are trying to understand what can and cannot work. We have spent a lot more time in D.C. than Virginia, frankly. It's pretty difficult to do these things in Virginia.
"We've made some progress, at least in terms of ourselves understanding sites. There is more than one in D.C. The RFK campus is not one we have spent a lot of time on, but it is always in the back of everybody's mind. It's not as simple as people might think because it would require an act of Congress. The stadium act is pretty specific: It's for a single stadium, and we don't want anything to do with knocking this one down. It would be really expensive."

*Payne said the club's top roster priorities this offseason would be a proven scorer and a central defender. United would also like to find a two-way central midfielder.

DCU LINEUP (4-4-2): Hamid; Graye, Simms, James, Zayner; Najar, Morsink, King, Quaranta; Allsopp, Hernandez. Subs: Perkins, Pena, Talley, McTavish, Moreno.

Your match observations are welcome.

Any thoughts on why the video quality is absolutely horrendous on some of these games? Watching on FSC, whose on-screen display claims it's coming to me in "HD". Which begs the question why the screen is smattered with huge pixels and image interpolation. Some kind of bandwidth compression for cost savings? Unacceptable quality, whatever the reason. Dark, muddy colors too. Oh yeah, AND we gave up another soft goal. What's on the movie channnels?

I thought about the movies too, but decided it's worth staying with the game just to see what Najar might do. I enjoy watching Cap'n Q too.

The goal was a rookie mistake by hamid. Forgiveable. DCu plays OK everywhere but in the attacking third, where we are toothless.

Najar is fun to watch. Q is working hard, but not doing much.

DC United: We win rarely!

This is really sad.

Feel bad for young Bill--ball-handling drills for him this week. I've long been amazed by how many of the field players trap balls up into the air. Quaranta was good first half, then disappeared. Alsopp was not so good. Agree with the commend above RE good across the field except for the attacking quarter.

The most amazing thing to me tonight was how gun shy everybody was. So many guys carried the ball into Columbus' box and then didn't shoot. Argh.

When Moreno subbed in for Allsopp I figured the match was lost. I would rather have had Cristman. And where was he?

Anybody go to the Q&A? Was it contentious?

I didn't see the item about Pontius before the game. I thought Ben just hated him or something since he refused to use any subs other than Moreno. Q was still awful.

The whole team is afraid to shoot for some reason. They should spend a week doing nothing but shooting. But they need to emphasize actually hitting the goal. Watching the shooting drills during warmups is depressing. Almost no one ever hits the goal....and that's with no defenders and just Troy in the net.

Bill was put in a very tough spot by that backpass. Was that Clyde or Graye who hit it to him?

The Crew did nothing most of the match. I thought we looked especially good most of the first half. But Najar disappeared in the second and he was our biggest spark as usual. All of that side to side passing has never gotten us anywhere. Once we do get it up front there's too much hesitation. No first time crosses or passes. Too many little touches while guys try to figure out what to do next. The inconsistent lineups don't help, but still they ought to be better.

What's the record for worst team in league history?

I know I am very late to this party, but I haven't been around DC United much this year because they are a complete let down.

I heard through a friend that there was some dissension in La Barra Brava and a group broke off and has a new supporters group. Can anyone fill me in as to what happened, who is the new supporters group, etc?

@kennyisbigk911
I had the same thought I swore they were people from La Norte but I guess I was wrong.

Either way that whole section from end to end will be a huge supporters section in the years to come.

La Norte joined District Ultras after the half on Wednesday.
Wasn't there tonight, so can't speak on it, but from the view on TV the action DU's section never seemed to cease, once again. Kudos for that.
