Charlie Davies, D.C. United's goalkeeper search, Colombian trialist, Danny Szetela arrested, WPS schedule

By Steve Goff

My story about the Charlie Davies deal will be posted soon on the main sports page. Dan Steinberg, who writes The Post's fabulous Sports Bog, was also in attendance at RFK Stadium for the formal introduction of D.C. United's new forward and, in a wide-ranging column, explores French cheese, the Stanky Leg and Honduran hostels.

In other news:

*With Steve Cronin sidelined and Bill Hamid not quite ready for regular work, United tossed around the idea of new goalkeepers coach Pat Onstad coming out of retirement. It's probably not going to happen, however. But if it did, Onstad's former club, the Houston Dynamo, would undoubtedly raise the issue of compensation. Onstad, 43, retired in December to work for United.

DCU is aggressively searching for goalkeeping help, and according to Coach Ben Olsen and General Manager Dave Kasper, trialists will join the club in camp in California soon.

For much more.....

Jeff Maurer, The Post's soccer fan blogger, takes a ticklish look at United's goalkeeping search.

*Colombian forward Sergio Villarreal (no relation to the La Liga club) will begin a trial with United in California.

*Former D.C. United midfielder Danny Szetela, an MLS bust, was busted outside of a New Jersey bar for disorderly conduct.

*On the women's front, WPS is tentatively planning to unveil the complete 2011 schedule Thursday. The club formerly known as the Washington Freedom has made no contact with Maryland SoccerPlex, a facility official told the Insider, which means the nomadic team is completely cutting ties to the area or its home matches are going to be listed as "to be determined." The team no longer has an office at the SoccerPlex.

The Boonton snood strikes again

While I only made it to a couple Freedom matches over the years, this news saddens me.

Posted by: DCB23 | February 16, 2011 8:20 PM | Report abuse

I agree, DCB23.

Others on this blog have identified professional women's soccer as a mid-Atlantic, Northeast sport. That's probably accurate. The league can make that work. Keep salaries low, help the players find jobs when they're not playing, and it can be a product enough people would pay to see.

@Goff,

I may have missed something along the way, but Onstad was in the list of players exposed in the re-entry draft. Here's what you wrote about players not selected by any club in either stage of the draft:

"If a player is not selected in either stage of the re-entry process, that player will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis to all clubs."

Seems to me based on that, that if Onstad un-retires, he's fair game.

@Goff: When will the story of Szetela be written? What really happened with him and DC United?

Posted by: tundey | February 16, 2011 9:20 PM | Report abuse

Szetela is a sad story - talent being pissed away. Too bad Tino couldn't sit down with him and offer him a different and better way to move forward with his life.

How about Gtown's GK Brutto for a trial. He's a home town guy and did a good job in the United /Gtown preseason game last fall.

Posted by: farpost | February 16, 2011 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Wow, that picture of Danny says it all.

Posted by: redskinsux | February 16, 2011 9:42 PM | Report abuse

OT: is it still called 'tracking back' if you are, in fact, already a defender?

Don't ask Dani Alves, I don't think he knows...

Interesting points in this article about magicTalk SC.

1. Borislow thinks that he saved the WPS.
2. He wants to create a tournament that, he thinks, will be bigger than the WWC.
3. Mike Lyons and Briana Scurry are listed as head coach and GM, respectively.
4. The article has all the objectivity of a press-release (no offense to those of you in PR).

I know a former ACC keeper, already in DC, who just quit his job. Made of plenty of saves and deflections in previous job. Even has experience dealing with our inside-the-beltway vermin found in old public buildings.

If Dan Steinberg is writing about DCU, the weather must be getting more fair. Good old Dan. I remember last year in an online Post chat when he said he had stopped writing about the team because it wasn't very good. Well, Dan, time to pull your European replica jerseys out of the closet and head down to RFK again. Ben Olsen will be in street clothes now, Dan, because he's the coach.

well played, seantipton.

I think he is currently a local youth team equipment manager or something...

Umm, seantipton, I think Robert Gibbs is hoping for something other than a temporary gig. But you are right about his qualifications.

There's something wrong with this headline:

How bout' them Gunners eh?

I'm unfriending Danny boy. All he does is smush with his over spray tanned girlfriend and go to the cemetery. The snood is fitting, but you'd kind of expect eyeliner and a side comb wouldn't ya?

Id prefer we comvince all the WPS investors to stop throwing away their money on an idea that will NEVER be profitable, and get them to invest in a stadium for United.

"Too bad Tino couldn't sit down with him and offer him a different and better way to move forward with his life."

Was that a Father Murphy episode, or an After School Special?

TQ: "Hmm, never mind my self, my young kids, my job or my game. I'm going to rescue this complete @zzhole I barely know who wants MY job (sort of). Praise the lord."

SQ: "Gosh, my teammates are AMAZING. I wish I could be more like them. Man, I wish Tino would speak up a bit; how am I supposed to hear him over my own belching?"

Sadly, they only got as far as holding hands and cloud watching when DS was released.

1. Sad news about the Freedom. The other issue is: these players in WPS are not millionaires--to not know where they're going to be living is a huge issue for some of them (who have husbands or boyfriends who are the primary wage earner, or who don't own an house but rent an apartment or share one and can't just move with 1 or 2 months notice). I really fear we're looking at an impending train wreck.

2. Love the Maurer job application. Where was he last year when we needed goal scorers...we obviously didn't have a job application for that spot (otherwise we wouldn't have ended up with Danny "we hardly knew ye" Allsopp).

3. Adu and Szetela--what talents and how poorly those two have developed. And you know it's not about injuries or serious physical limitations. We're not good enough as a soccer nation yet where we can see players like that fail to develop without feeling a real sense of loss and missed opportunity.

Gooch Oneywu is having the time of his life this AM. FC Twente are playing a Europa League match against the Russian club Rubin Kazan in Moscow. Game time temperature on the artificial turf is zero degrees Fahrenheit. Internet feeds of the game can be found pretty easily.

Women's soccer not economically viable... SHOCKED I TELL YOU!

Can't wait for the Hope Solo twitter rant though.

Posted by: GFisher1 | February 17, 2011 8:34 AM | Report abuse

Gooch ends up on the winning side as Twente get two second half goals. Even Barcelona could not defeat Rubin Kazan in Russia!!!

It is amazing how Borislow and his PT Barnum, barnstorming vision really thinks that he is going to change the market landscape.

I mean, that's just plain crazy. Almost as crazy as plugging something into your router so that you make unlimited phone calls would blow up to the point where you could make mad bank when there cell phones had alread become so popular that there 7 year olds walking around with them.

Wait--ok. Maybe he's not crazy after all...

I didn't see that other thing that he was pitching blowing up like it did, either.

"Visionary" or "crazy"--you and history can be the judge.

Like DCB23, I didn't to as many Freedom games as I wanted to but I did enjoy it when I did manage to get out to Boyd's.

How you doin? Rossi plays in Naples today.

Marca points out that in Barca's 10 non-wins in 40 this season, Puyol has been absent in all 4 losses and 2 of 6 ties.

Szzzzetela and his brothers should get the band back together -- The Boonton Rats.

I wonder if Mzzz. Szzzetela was able to negotiate favorable bail -- pay for 2 and get the 3d one free.

MagicTalk SC will barnstorm the country playing games against local college, high-school, and select teams. Tens of thousands of ex-pat Brazilians and Jamaicans will buy tickets for each game. Attendance at WWC11 will suffer because fans will fly to the US to watch them play.

Any story written about Szetela would have to include Soehn. He ran him off because he appeared at training one day grossly hungover. Soehn flipped.

The kid had a terrible attitude to begin with; ask anyone in Columbus. You may recall that MLS staged a televised lottery on ESPN for his team assignment. He was just second after Freddy as the next coddled, enabled, promoted, adulated next great star for MLS.

When is SUM and its US pro soccer division MLS going to learn that they do no favors to these kids by starting them off that way?
