If I hadn't already bought my season tickets, this would absolutely be the kicker. So excited about this season.

Posted by: VercengetorixII | February 16, 2011 10:08 AM | Report abuse

there's something dirty sounding about an Insider poll ;)

Posted by: dcufan | February 16, 2011 10:10 AM | Report abuse

Only reason it's a 9, not a 10, is because of lingering doubts as to whether or not he can take the pounding of an MLS season.

Posted by: mmathai1 | February 16, 2011 10:10 AM | Report abuse

9. Because it doesn't make much sense for me to buy season tickets. Also, it just seems fitting.

Posted by: JacobfromAtlanta-ish | February 16, 2011 10:14 AM | Report abuse

I'm an 8 until his hamstring goes and inevitable need for mid-season hernia surgery in Germany.

But how can ya not be excited about the possibility of the first legitimate striker we've had in years?

Posted by: delantero | February 16, 2011 10:16 AM | Report abuse

"This one goes to 11..."

Posted by: JkR- | February 16, 2011 10:17 AM | Report abuse

I'm with JacobfromAtlanta-ish, but a good portion of my brain space share delantero's fear.

Posted by: UnitedDemon1 | February 16, 2011 10:18 AM | Report abuse

I'm with delantero on this one...8 and then just crossing my fingers against the inevitable hammy injury.

Posted by: fedssocr | February 16, 2011 10:34 AM | Report abuse

The offense looks to be set and the defense is questionable at best. Could be lots of goals scored at RFK this season!

Posted by: timmy6 | February 16, 2011 10:45 AM | Report abuse

Ya *gotta* be excited about this! What's all this "he might get hurt, he might not last" garbage? That's _always_ true, no matter who you bring on. We get to watch CD recover his form (or not, of course) while wearing the black and red! Given that we are fans of both DCU and the USA, this is nothing but awesome.

Posted by: glfrazier | February 16, 2011 10:45 AM | Report abuse

Fun fact tweet:

Dcunited: First Charlie Davies jersey ordered...and being delivered to Marseille, France.

Posted by: JacobfromAtlanta-ish | February 16, 2011 10:53 AM | Report abuse

I'll save 9 or 10 for someone just as good who would get the attention of non-soccer fans and draw in that extra 10k attendance to RFK. Like next season when we sign Forlan.

But between CD and Dax, this is much more than I expected in the off-season. Well done DCU. And props to Ngwenya too, who may be feeling like, hey, I gave you guys a hat trick last week, where's my poll???

Now how do we/DCU let the casual fans know that this is, as Thor's idol Joe Biden would say, a BFD?

Posted by: fallschurch1 | February 16, 2011 10:56 AM | Report abuse

This was quite a scene in October, 2009. Looking forward to another one just like it next month. (Not to mention another horrifying display of finishing from Conor Casey in May.)

Posted by: benonthehill | February 16, 2011 11:08 AM | Report abuse

@fallschurch1: I was at a Hill event last year when Biden and his detail came walking by. Being Biden, he didn't miss the chance to shake hands. I don't care for the man, of course, but I certainly shook his hand. He's the VP of the United States!

As for CD, I'm sticking with my 7. Better to be pleasantly surprised than to be let down if he doesn't pan out as hoped.

Posted by: Rand-al-Thor | February 16, 2011 11:13 AM | Report abuse

I'm going crazy with this news. I should take off from work tomorrow.

Where is Gene Wells?

Worst to first!

Posted by: Reignking | February 16, 2011 11:48 AM | Report abuse

Even if he's not at 100 % yet, this is a great mix. MLS defenders are getting better. But even with a recovery and even though he won't be as polished as his pre-injury form... he'll still do a sharp job. I'm pretty confident he'll score 8 - 10 goals. He might go on a hot streak at the end of the season and MLS Playoffs. Could be a good year.

10. Even though I already renewed.

I voted 8 because he is still an unproven commodity in the league. The move, coupled with our young talent coming through, makes very interested to watch this team. Also, the official announcement today has Mrs. Grubbsbl and I planing a couple road trips to go see DC in either Colorado, San Jose, or LA before we get back to DC in late June. (it helps I want to see all those stadiums). Josh, I'll let you know my findings if your interested in joining us. Another friend wants to do the LA trip.

I'm definitely in and was already eyeballing that June 4th game in LA.

8 because nothing in this world is certain...season tic renewed long ago when things were still depressing and unfun. I feel better about my decision every day!

Posted by: DCB23 | February 16, 2011 1:40 PM | Report abuse

If I lived in DC (and not Vegas), absolutely would it be a 10. Although if I lived in DC, I would have already purchased season ticket long before news broke about Davies. Either way, a 9 it was for me.

Posted by: elopingcamel | February 16, 2011 1:53 PM | Report abuse

I would be a 10,but I can not make the $ commitment for season tickets until some things settle down. So I put it at 9-otherwise a 10. Super excited. As previously stated, the first legit striker to be in a DCU kit in too many years.

Posted by: DCUmaniacsX2 | February 16, 2011 1:54 PM | Report abuse

I punched the 7 hole, too. Mostly because, on the surface, it looks like a great signing and becasue i am really happy to see CD9 playing first team soccer again and hope that he makes I back to the NT (like just almost everbody else posting).

But then I remember that this is DC United that we are talking about and this club has kind of sucked out most of the hope right out of my body in recent years. I almost wonder if it my local MLS club cursed.

Maybe somebody who works for the club did kill one of those big RFK rats that they encountered in the basement one morning. Maybe it was the Rat King. And thus, the curse.

I'm just throwing it out there.

"7" seemed like an optimistic but guarded choice.

yikes! They have a whole month to install new turf, right?

Posted by: Rand-al-Thor | February 16, 2011 2:54 PM | Report abuse

Gotta say a "9" because I am jazzed. I won't buy season tickets, but I will plan a couple of big group events. It seems like the buzz factor just went up a couple of notches at Estadio RFK.

Does anyone else notice the audio on FSC is just a bit off? Yesterday during AC Milan - Tottenham, it was a second slow, now it seems a second ahead of the action.

I guess its a minor quibble, but it is kind of irritating to hear the commentator's reaction before you see the action.

Josh86, I like that date too. We will be done with school -I'll have a meaningless Masters- and we should be clear to head west on 40. I'll be in touch.

don't get me wrong, I'm mad excited, but the fact that DC has the option to buy tells me that Sochaux doesn't believe that Davies will ever return to his peak of ability =(

Still can't afford season tickets so I don't know if this would be the straw that broke the camels back, but I'm sure to do everything I can to attend more matches this year than last.

I picked 9 as well. Already started showing my daughter videos of the stanky leg dance. It will be mandatory in this household to have it down by the start of the season... ;)

6 to 7. I wish he had competed against someone other than a couple U20 cupcake squads. One thing I really liked hearing from him is that the shirt means something to him. Hopefully that will spread to other players.

Yeah, but Ligue 1 peak ability is different than MLS peak ability.

@tphasbdp -- Hard not to notice the lag between voice and picture.

@Tenorioslaptop -- The purchase option is simply how MLS does it. It's policy. I'm sure they were pretty adamant about not setting a precedent with an exception. The price is pretty steep for MLS. I could be wrong about this, but I think that would be the highest price MLS will have paid. As for Sochaux, I'm just not too concerned what they think. I only care if Davies is good enough for MLS....and, eventually the USMNT. It's been a while since United had a legitimate US national team regular.

@Goff -- If you can find out, can you tell us how much, if anything, MLS (or DCU) is paying Sochaux for the loan? I'd definitely be curious.

@wp hobo -- Goff tweeted about Arnoux. Apparently, a lot of teams, DC included, were scared off because Cody recently had microfracture knee surgery. Definitely controversial, but if it works his knee, in theory would be less arthritic, not more. All I know is I can't any insurance to cover that. Also, it would probably be awhile before Arnoux is healthy enough to play even if his knee heals the way it's supposed to.

What I raised in earlier thread is the question about why DCU passed on Chris Agorsor. Philly seems to pretty convinced he's over his injury troubles, and they had him in camp. I guess we're left hoping that some U17 player signs with MLS this summer -- or maybe a U20 player decides not to go back to school.

Posted by: fischy | February 16, 2011 4:59 PM | Report abuse

you can get the new authentic red shirt from the team store with free player customization today and tomorrow. Saves $15. But they charge a whopping $13.95 for shipping so it cancels out.

Posted by: fedssocr | February 16, 2011 5:36 PM | Report abuse

As a MLS generalist fan (meaning, I can't really settle on just one team!), I tipped 8, because I'm happy for DCU and I hope to see them play good competitive soccer this year.

It would seem that United are headed in the right direction this year. So far. :)

Posted by: dccal | February 16, 2011 12:28 PM

-------------------------------------------------------------

I think that's unfair. First off, Olsen hasn't won any games yet this year. Second -- the coaches didn't get the support they needed. Soehn nearly had Veron. That would have made a big difference. After that, they gave him Gallardo. ON other fronts, the front office was busy trading away draft picks, failing to sign the ones they had, and making horrible signings.

Some of that is luck, borne out of having the worst season in club history last year. Put them in a position to get Perry Kitchen in the draft and Charlie Davies in the allocation -- the latter of which only happens because DeMerit and Cooper sign first with the expansion teams.

Contrast the good fortune in getting Davies with DCU's allocation signing 2 years ago.

I'm definitely very excited, it'll be a real treat to see CD9 try to work his way back to top form. He's obviously worked very hard just to get to this point but obviously there's a sizable gap between wherever he is today vs. September 2009. Knowing he's a guy who'll give it his best is a great feeling, though I get the feeling my expectations are more tempered than most other posters.

While its hard to know just where he's at form-wise, the man certainly KNOWS HOW to score goals- and that's certainly an asset.

Welcome to DCU CD9!

I say: AO!
You say: DC!

I checked 9. I can't buy season tickets right now but I am very optimistic about the upcoming season. From Dax to Davies I think the FO and Ben have made some real improvements over last year's roster and I plan to make the long trek from Amish country to RFK maybe five or six times this season to show my support. Plus I can't wait to wear the black and red in the House of PU. A hungry and healthy Davies should be quite a force in MLS.
