just proves yet again that you should never allow the guy who was fouled to take the subsequent PK

Ah Clint, still choking at the pens. Peter Cech does look a little like Nick Rimando, no?

To make matters worse, he spit on the field just before he shot.

Dempsey was completely wiped out. Gera and Gudjaharson were fresh, one of them should have taken it. I blame Bob Bradley, errr, Mark Hughes.

he had all the time on the world for the rebound and shot it high wide and not handsome.

He didn't really have "all the time in the world"... Check out how high that bounce was, with Cech quickly recovering. Also check out the amount of dirt/mud on Dempsey's shirt- the dude is the embodiment of an American player

He forgot to crouch down and do some hoodoo stuff with his hands . . .

'He forgot to crouch down and do some hoodoo stuff with his hands . . .'

HA! in seriousness, it is a good time to appreciate LDs PK prowess. not something to take for granted.

off the inside post v ghana being a nice example...

everyone seems to have forgotten Landon's balloon into the stands during the shoot out in the 09' MLS Cup Final at Qwest... lol. Even Beckham shook his head at that.

Still folks miss, but I do agree that the dude dragged down should almost always let someone else take the shot, but I can understand with his desire to surpass McBride and earn himself his own bar probably runs pretty hot. ;)

Probably not as disappointed as Chelsea fans who watched a very potent looking El Nino do absolutely nothing with his chances.

Dempsey blew it. How are you going to go low against a gorilla like Cech? He made it way too easy for Cech.

Posted by: alan19 | February 14, 2011 7:34 PM | Report abuse

I can't tell from this replay if that's a foul or a dive.

RE: Landon: he did famously miss in the PK shootout in the final against RSL, and I think he had a couple saved in MLS play this year - definitely at least one: against Sean Johnson.

But I can't remember the last time he failed to convert for the Nats.

The defender kicks at the ball and all he connects with is Dempsey's shin, so that's a foul.

Shame he tried that awkward bicycle volley off the miss since if he'd let it go, it looked like one of his teammates was in perfect position to come in and possibly bury it.

well, according to the stat folks at the WSJ, he probably should have waited a bit longer after the whistle before he kicked. Those that take a longer pause make the PK more often.

Also, the last penalty he took was off a foul he drew, and he buried it.

DOH!!!

Danny Murphy, their Captian, usually takes the PK's, but he'd already been subbed off. I guess the thinking was "go with our leading scorer".

I heard Ewen Murray, a commentator for Britain's Sky Sports, said on air after seeing Dempsey spit on the field before taking the PK that it was "one of the ugliest things you will ever see on a football pitch. ...somebody now has to come behind him and maybe run over his spit. It does not get much lower than that."

right, as opposed to all the snot, spit, phlegm that is already on the rest of the field.....

whatever.......

Dempsey was awesome all game and has been brilliant all season. But, he never should have been the one to take that shot. At some point, he's got to be smart enough to know he's gassed after running hard for 90+ on a wet field. Maybe he learned a lesson.

But, you can't really take away from his effort in that match.

"Falters", really? I mean, it wasn't a poorly taken corner. He struck it with conviction, and it wasn't directly at Cech. The keeper just guessed right. What does a guy have to do to not get crucified in the press? Sure, I'll concede that it could have been a little further into the side netting, but it was far from a poorly taken corner.

Kudos to Cech for winning his side a point.

Yeah, I'm an idiot. I meant, "poorly taken penalty".
