Wednesday kickaround: Real Salt Lake, D.C. United, Manchester United, Barcelona, Americans abroad, TV listings

By Steve Goff

*Real Salt Lake became the first MLS club to reach the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals with a 4-1 victory over the Columbus Crew (4-1 aggregate). RSL will face Saprissa or Olimpia on March 15 at home and April 5 away. In the all-Mexican bracket, Cruz Azul will play Monterrey or Toluca.

*Read about D.C. United's goalkeeping situation.

*Pat Onstad's playing contract with D.C. United will last up to three months. Final details are being worked out with the league. United doesn't anticipate any problems. Los Angeles defender Gregg Berhalter is also a player-coach this year. A percentage of their income is applied to the salary cap, the rest is part of the team's private coaching budget. Who was United's previous player-coach? Hristo Stoitchkov in 2003.

*Fred, who just began his second stint with United, says that, if he hadn't worked out a deal in MLS, he had planned to rejoin Melbourne Victory in Australia -- his club prior to signing with United a few years ago. He owns a home in Germantown, Md., where younger brother Junior Carreiro, out with a sprained ankle, is staying. "We are going to kick him out," Fred said with a smile. Fred and his wife are expecting a second child next month.

*Onstad, on rookie Perry Kitchen, who has paired with Dejan Jakovic in central defense: "As camp has gone on, he has taken a bigger role back there and become a pretty verbal leader. For a guy like Dejan, who is a quiet but very good defender, it's a good partnership developing."

*We've been waiting since December for an official announcement concerning the proposed Manchester United-Barcelona friendly this summer at FedEx Field near Washington. The latest word is that it could come as early as next week.

For Americans abroad and TV listings.....

*Americans abroad:
GK Brad Friedel and MF Michael Bradley for Aston Villa at Manchester City (FA Cup)

MF Maurice Edu and Rangers at Celtic (Scottish Cup)

I'm really intrigued by Kitchen. Is the consensus that he will be a bigger pick up than Omar Gonzalez?

I've heard a lot of sentences that use both "Perry Kitchen" and "Tim Ream".

from DCU's twitter feed: "The club has signed defender Chris Korb."

and another friendly at FedEx...no thanks!

This is DCU's master plan. Sure RFK is dirty, crumbling, has fewer concessions and longer lines, but a trip to FedEx will remind us how metro-convenient, interstate-convenient, intimate, bouncing stands fun, and tail-gate friendly "Our House" is.

Never thought I'd say this, but c'mon Gunners. I want them to be as match weary as Man United through the rest of this campaign.

MFLS (MLS fantasy league) is up and running. DadRyan, did you set up Argy Bargy Goff Insiders last year? Are you in again?

Posted by: benonthehill | March 2, 2011 10:11 AM | Report abuse

@BaRRD - I agree with all your points, but are you sure the FO is smart enough to actualy have a "master plan"?

I'm no fan of FedEx Field, and I'm sure the ticket price will be in outer space, but these are unquestionably the two biggest teams in the world. If it happens, I'll be there.

What are y'all going on about with regards to this ManUtd-Barcelona friendly and DC United? What's the connection to DC United? None that I can see. These teams want a bigger, better facility than RFK. DC United isn't even in the mix there.

In news about games that actually involve DC United, DCU tweets that Philly play-in game will be Wed., Apr, 6 at the Plex.

Here's a piece that sheds a little light on how Soehn and DC united worked with the Favre father-son pair. May explain all those lame signings from lower Swiss league teams. Interesting that the team still considered hiring father Lucien for the coaching spot a year after cutting ties with Soehn.

9Nine9 don't you mean, "Let's get in the Black with the Black and Red?!" I for one am SICK of being in the Red with them....

Posted by: lovinliberty | March 2, 2011 11:35 AM | Report abuse

@lovinliberty -- I'll be in Red for the opener. #9 jersey.

lovinlibery is an interesting name....Just paroled, or getting out of a long relationship?

Fantasy Football... did I set that up last year..? I guess I did. I didn't really like MFLS that much...maybe it's just me, but it wasn't my favorite format.

I'm in for a fantasy league, but maybe we should make a decision based on the format the majority would like to join?

Perhaps Goff want's to get on the stick and announce his own preference and game? Not saying you need to go all SBI on us Big Steve, but perhaps you could endorse a game and offer up a lunch date with you for the winner? :)

In other news, our party of 7 tickets in the Screaming Eagles sections for the DCU/Gals game a few days after that plex play in have been confirmed...I can't make the home opener but I'm going all in on the second home stand.

Vamos United!

DadRyan - not sure if you are a fan of electronic dance music, but check out who is playing the DC Armory the night of the Galaxy game: http://www.clubglow.com/tiesto/index2.htm

This should be a massive event. Going until 2am. Maybe Becks will drop by...

Tiesto's logo looks like a thong...lol. Not my bag Pedleada but I'm sure someone's bound to bite. With any luck I'll be firing up the grill again after the game while we let the traffic thin out. :)
