Anna Chapman, accused spy, is Internet sensation

By Jeff Stein

“Act naturally,” the Russians tell their espionage trainees before dispatching them to America.

Boy, did she.

Anna Chapman cut a wide swath in New York even before her arrest on charges of spying for Mother Russia, judging by the sultry shots and videos suddenly popping up everywhere, starting with her own Facebook page.

Now, thanks to her penchant for seductive poses, she’s an international star. You’d hardly know her real pose, according to U.S. officials, was deadly serious: seducing government officials and businessmen into providing state secrets.

That would be treason for an American, punishable by death. Chapman, a Russian, faces only five years in prison for her espionage-related charges.

Even the lurid New York Post, though, caught the whiff of danger in Chapman's gambit.

“Spy ring’s ‘femme fatale’” the tabloid's front page screamed. “Red hot beauty snared in Russian ‘espionage’ shock.”

“The Soho Spy,” ABC News called her. “Stunning Anna Chapman Accused in Russia Spy Ring.”

Stunning indeed. The San Francisco Chronicle's Web site ran a headline a carny barker would approve of: “Check Out Alleged Russian Spy Anna Chapman's Facebook Glamor Shots.”

Of course, she was already on You Tube. A dozen videos appeared seemingly out of nowhere, some of them short and shaky jobs apparently shot by anonymous “friends.”

But in another, professional video, whose origin is still unclear, Chapman gives an interview in Russian to an unidentified journalist. In it, she talks about how much easier it is to make business connections in New York than Moscow.

“It’s very easy here,” she says.

Her profile on LinkedIn, the social and business networking site, was less lurid but no less seductive.

She lists herself as the chief executive officer of PropertyFinder Ltd., a Manhattan real estate firm.

“Love launching innovative high-tech start-ups and building passionate teams to bring value into market!” she writes, under a professional-looking photo only slightly less lurid than the New York Post’s.

As the Chronicle urged, people were no doubt checking out Chapman's photos in droves -- the clicks for the New York Post’s alone were mounting hourly by the hundreds.

Watch a video of Jeff Stein discussing the case, here.

Anna Chapman is unbelievably hot. Definite spy material especially in the blackmail, badger game department.

Of course the NY Post had this story for a full day before WaPo, but there you go.

my advice

before i get invovled with a woman i always imagine them taking a big stinking crap on the toilet and behind a table with a divorce lawyer, that usually clears the head.

Posted by: ryan_heart | June 29, 2010 6:33 PM | Report abuse

Imagine if this woman had been able to hook up with John Edwards.
And it had remained unknown to the public. And, he had somehow been able to win the nomination.
Infidelity among men of power is NOT just a personal concern for them and their families.

She is not hot. She has a ski nose like most Slavs and like Richard Nixon. Who thought she was American? The waiters at a Ukrainian restaurant in Brooklyn. If a State Dept guy was seduced by her, he should be shot for geographic stupidity. As for Anna and the rest of this pseudo-American spy crew, send them to Chechnyal.

Have to agree a lot with edgardog1 says. Besides he is funny.

This spy could be in the movie "The spies who could not spy" since she gave an interview in Russian.

First, Mr. Stein writes, "[y]ou’d hardly know her real pose, according to U.S. officials, was deadly serious: seducing government officials and businessmen into providing state secrets."

Second, in the complaint filed in the Southern District of New York, DOJ provides additional background: "These Russian secret agents work to hide all connections between themselves and Russia . . . . to become sufficiently 'Americanized' such that they can gather information about the United States for Russia, and can successfully recruit sources who are in, or are able to infiltrate, United States policy-making circles."

Based on that description, you'd half expect a person stripped of any vestige of their Ruskiness (Kevin Costner in No Way Out?).

But, how do you reconcile the assimilation with a facebook profile littered with Russian messages? Or a friend list chock full of Russian friends? Or even attending a school under a Russian-sounding name (Mikhail Semenko)? Is this hiding in plain sight (i.e., that is probably what it means to be truly "Americanized" today)?

Or was this particular group more interested in monitoring Russian communities in the U.S. (based on her friend list, you wouldn't think that she was successful in meeting many Americans when compared to any other attractive female in NY... to say nothing of the info value of the people she did meet)?

P.S. Please find and reveal the name of the restaurant in D.C. The city desperately needs more intrigue in its dining.

WHY oh why is the media and some of you Americans treating this so casually? I don't give a rat's ass if she is "hot"; she is a SPY, a spy against our nation. She should be put to death.

How long has she and her comrades been in the United States and why have they not been detected? Some more illegals that we pamper. Obama probably knew of their existence long ago and probably wants to give them amnesty. We have the Mexicans coming into our country by the millions, the Chinese here stealing our technology and the Russians screwing for state secrets. What a country!!!

The FBI should also look more intensely on ACLU. It destroys America more than any spy if it's not a spy agency itself.

New wine in old bottle or old wine in new bottle? Whatever the bottle is, it must be a "black wine" this time around; on another hunch, either Russian Vodka or Anna Karinina or From Russia With Love!
At this time, it's Russia(n) again, after a long time since the Cold War, and right after the rare informal sandwich-time sharing by the US and Russian Presidents at an American diner.
It can not be a short time affair to have exposed such a sensation, when the world's most developed countries armed with the ultra-modern weapons have been fighting in a war against a handful number of medieval "cavemen" for years suffering comparatively more costly losses.
For the record, USA comprises immigrants from all countries (including illegal foreigners) - friends and enemies alike.
The likelihood of treason naturally exits, along with Spy Shops, Spy Reporters, Spy Sattelites, and "undercover" movie stories along with CIA and KGB - no surprise.
Now, a new suspicion develops from this event: What about other friendly foes yet to be discovered? To shed a little light on a few suspects, viz., Spanish, French, German, Greek, and "Black" spies, if any!
How to make sense out of this kind of activities when all offensive and defensive measures are concentrated on one target - "terrorism" - must storm many brains. Once again, who spies for who and why? Who are the genuine patriots then? How many are the real heroes? Isn't it time the government checked own basement as well as backyard?

It's pretty obvious why they recurited this women; she gorgeous.

You have to hand it to the Ruskies, they sure know how to recruit spies. If I ran a spy agency, I'd hire as many beautiful women as possible.

Why? because as a guy, I know the power they can have over men. Beautiful women can easily manipulate men into saying things & doing that is normally against their better judgement - something which makes them ideal spies.

Did you happen to post in the wrong thread because your generic screed against Obama has nothing to do with Anna Chapman. People like you are ruining message boards all over the internet with your boring, predictable rants.

Can't you at least comment on her looks like a normal person instead of going into a typical, dull and screed against libs?

By the way, "lefty libs"? Are you implying that there are "righty libs"? Here's your new word for today; redundancy.

I am so impressed by our spy catchers. How did they ever even begin to suspect that a woman who knows Moscow well, and has dozens of Russian friends on Facebook, might possibly not really be named Anna Chapman? They must have ESP or something.

Yeah, hate to break it to this wannabe Natasha Fatale but she's about a 5 out of 10. Just because a woman is slim doesn't mean she's "hot". She's Russian "ghetto fabulous". In NYC she wouldn't even get a second glance. I think this is more a case of a few journalists saying "wow a non-celebrity we're reporting on that isn't disgustingly fat" and trying to engineer a little traffic that way.

Also for the ones talking treason - she's no traitor, she's not an American citizen. Let's not give her a title she doesn't deserve (citizen). She's just a lowly Russian spy, newest in a long line coming out of that country and into ours.

Jeff Stein's guilty of false adverts. The inferences this so called "serious journalism" permits are nothing but a patina of lies. Done checked the net as carefully as possible. Combed the thing. Scanned over and over. Not one X rated video any where. Not a single blasted video.

__________

A lesson obtrudes itself on an otherwise frivolous discourse. Had the conspirators succeeded, the death penalty might have been a consideration. Superb undercover work means the spies will return to Russia with love in a few years. Everyone cries entrapment, but consequences of non entrapment are worse. Imagine if those sometimes caught by such means were not thwarted in their attempts to murder.

I encourage the Post's editors to spend 10 minutes on Russia's Facebook clone, vkontakte.ru, by which time it should be obvious that the 'sultry' pictures causing such fanfare are actually banal (and rather tame) for Russia's online social networking culture. To me, these shots only serve as an indicator of her country of origin. Not the best cover.

"seducing government officials and businessmen into providing state secrets."

As usual Russia's old trick.

Russia is notorious for video taping Russian prostitutes having sex with foreign government officials to blackmail them.

Russian mail order brides (potential sleeper cells) who are married to Americans with access to top secret government information pose serious threat to our national security.

Only one of the posts above hints at the possibility that these were double agents tasked by a U.S. agency with keeping tabs on Americans of Russian descent.

Or perhaps this was false flag psy op intended to give the intel community a Potemkin-style public relations "victory?"

I mean, really... do these things always come tied up and wrapped in a bow? Like the Times Square and underpants bombers, perhaps?

Am I still allowed to ask such questions, or am I again guilty of questioning authority?

Okay, maybe the Russians are bumblers... or was that the intended public response?

Discuss.

So both Anna the hottie spy and the wife of the Boston spy worked in real estate, and by the looks of it higher end stuff. Were they trying to broker the deals of scientists and policy makers with classified clearance so they could bug the house before they moved in? Realtors have access to any listed house. But if they were high enough on the secrecy food chain wouldn't the house be swept for bugs and you risk blowing the whole thing anyway?

"and a red headed woman gets the dirty job done"

YESTERDAY'S CHILD BY PATTI SCIALFA

Anna
In a foreign blue
Yesterday I saw someone
Who reminded me of you
And I
Held my breath
And called your name
And though I knew it was not you
I followed just the same
I wanted to raise the glass
To a symphony of miles
And say our last farewell
To yesterday's child

Anna
Sweep the doorway clean
Let's forgive
Before we blame
And I
Will make my own amends
With the dust and sin
Underneath my skin
And on my maiden name

Chorus:
So let's raise the glass
To a symphony of miles
And say our last farewell
To yesterday's child

Anna
In my dreams
I open my arms
And I'm flying
Let's do some living
Forget about the dying

Anna
I've done my thousand days
Now I'm walking free in time
And I
Still have my imaginings
Where there's no struggling
Or suffering
Just cigarettes and wine

(Chorus)

Just Patti and Anna fooling America with a communist freak!
