How to Attack Barack Obama
[Need personal advice of a political nature? Or political advice of a personal nature? Send your question to Stumped. Questions may be edited.]
Dear Stumped,
I am a Republican running for president. How the heck do I attack a black man?
-- Jonathan Krim
Dear Jonathan,
Well, if you are pretending to be John McCain and assuming Barack Obama is the eventual Democratic nominee, you are in luck. Instead of bearing the burden of being the first person to attack Obama, you can simply echo what Obama's primary opponent has been saying. And with the Democratic contest slated to go on till who-knows-when, expect plenty of material forthcoming from the Clinton camp.
In the last week, the Teflon seems to have come off Obama, and Clinton scored direct hits by challenging his national-security credentials (with her creepy have-you-checked-the-children ad) and his campaign's forthrightness (on its NAFTA utterances to Canadian diplomats). McCain himself hasn't been shy about piling on, mocking Obama's suggestion at a debate that the U.S. might have to intervene again in Iraq if Al Qaeda established itself there after an American withdrawal.
If he does face off against Obama in the general election, McCain, an old white Republican (not that there's anything wrong with that), needs to be careful. Even offhanded comments about Obama's personal history -- be it his heritage or past drug use -- could come across as snide bigotry. Clinton, as a female Democrat, probably has a little more latitude to go there. But not much.
Unfortunately, surrogates will likely fill the void with the kind of horrible innuendo that was used against McCain himself leading up to the 2000 South Carolina primary. You can expect a ratcheting up of the ongoing campaign, driven more by xenophobia than racism, to question Obama's patriotism. There will be an attempt to make Obama's middle name (Hussein) as well known as J.F.K.'s. Groundless rumors that he is a Muslim will proliferate. Republicans will feast on his explanations for not wearing a flag pin and his wife's comments about being proud of being American "for the first time." The anecdotal reports of Ohio Democrats who believe that Obama refuses to say the pledge of allegiance is a troubling indicator of how much credence people give all this nonsense bouncing around the Internet. (Present company excluded, of course.)
McCain has indicated he won't condone such slights, and he did denounce a conservative radio talk show host Bill Cunningham's taunting repetition of Obama's middle name at a campaign event last week. The Republican candidate can essentially have it both ways, scoring points by being principled while allowing others to spread all sorts of smut.
What McCain can do himself in the fall if he faces Obama, to great effect, is echo Clinton's criticism. This is where the qualifier "even" becomes a political dagger -- as in "even Hillary Clinton thought my opponent wasn't ready to be commander in chief."
This strategy of resurrecting intramural primary attacks (meant to stay in the family) in a general election is hardly new, though it's not always effective. For years, Democrats had a field day quoting George H.W. Bush's view, expressed in the 1980 Republican primary campaign, that Ronald Reagan's economic thinking amounted to "voodoo economics." Not that it did Walter Mondale much good to remind voters of that four years later.
So, the short answer your question: The way for a Republican to attack an African-American candidate for the presidency is to preface such attacks with these five magical words: "As even Hillary Clinton said ..."

Israel's Mossad is the solution to Barry Seotero (Barack Obama's real name). It's called a Mossad sniper's bullet. Seotero won't attack Iran. Doris Lessing said Barry's number is up if he gets the presidency. I say cancel the '2008 election.

I can make up numbers too, Linda. For example, 80% of people think you're not contributing honestly or effectively to political discourse. See how easy that was?

20% of democrats will vote for mccain if obama gets the nomanation thats a lot of democrats maybe enough to lose i am proud to be part of that 20%and so is all my family and friends we need to keep obama out of the white house any way we can he is bad news for this country

button. I think perhaps before anyone moves forward someone should begin Webinairs for those Senators who go to Washington and don't know how to use that pesky button voting system (red is no, green is yes, yellow is abstain). I can certainly see how it could be darned confusing .... those Harvard grads! perhaps if the working class signed up with Harvard for a work study program so that these folks can learn how to push buttons (will gladly show use of elevator, defrost button in cars, radios, and how to navigate without gps in a car, using a ball point pen to take notes instead of a computer)...perhaps there can be a special government agency funding program for that, so that all of these Ivy leaguers in the Senate will not be at any disadvantage.

Barack Obama already is attacking himself. I have gone to American Indian pow wows, and have been to Ireland, but realized regardless of how I wanted to fit in, it wasn't terribly practical. It doesn't mean that I don't support Am Indian causes, or make enough money to be able to afford a small house near those islands where they speak Gaellic, but I would not be disloyal to the memory of my grandma (who was not a racist btw) to do it. Mr. Obama is White (not sure what heritage he has on that side) and Black (Arabic and African from that side) and he has the chance of somehow reclaiming a protected position as a traditional black male in America but as to any slave roots those would have to come from the white side of his family because it couldn't come from the other side of his gene pool. There are as many light skinned folks out there who have some genetic ties to slaves in the US as there are dark skinned folks in the US. Not all blacks are descendants of slaves, and not all whites were descendants of slave owners. Perhaps that should be added to history books along with the definition of racism. Obama's grandma won't be in any position to impact by her racial or gendist views, but her grandson is. And already we are treated to this kinda crazy preacher he's got and this kinda nutty view he has. The closest I came to attending a crazy church like that was a Holy Roller church, and not because of any racial views but because they had rattlesnakes pulled out of boxes. (I was in the balcony and yes last time I went there!) but that was for purely curiousity reasons. If someone who is running for public office's obvious affiliations are dismissed because of our race and our inability to understand the complexities of race because...and why can't we understand what we live within? I think perhaps someone needs to worry about the idea that he will happily sell his grandma "a woman who loved and cared for him" down the river. We who have not done that, how easily will he sell us out for? Or is it already a done deal.

Obama is doing all he can-, understandably, to diffuse the focus on Rev. Wright and his outrageously hateful sermons. So he drags in Ferraro and South Carolina and the WHOLE history of racism in America.
What is at stake here in this election is literally the future of our country. I ask you to consider... why, why, why...didn't Obama speak out, as he did so eloquently this week, to the members of his congregation and to Wright and Meeks and all others who perpetuated the outrageous sentiments he condemned this week. What was he waiting for? You don't have to be President or a candidate for President to work for unity and racial justice. You all need to remember MLK and all he accomplished without any official office or title. (By the way, Martin Luther King's speeches were only the tip of an iceberg that included meetings, strategy, protests and marches that changed the dialog of race and influenced LBJ among others to change the law.) So ask yourself...what was Obama waiting for? MLK was 42 when he was assassinated. Look at all he accomplished before he was killed. Obama is 46, what was he waiting for?
The Presidency is not some magic place....you have to work, bit by bit, just as MLK did to advance your policies in or out of office. I would feel confident of Obama if he had a history of working in aid of the public policies he speaks so eloquently about. What is he waiting for? What was he waiting for?
Let me be clear, I am not anti-Obama, I just want to understand his strange behavior.

I think that Obama is not the person for the job. He concentrates mostly in helping his people when he knows they already have all the help they can get from public aid. It's time for hime to focus in helping hard working Latinos! STOP RAIDS, RACISM, AND HELP YOUNG PEOPLE GET A COLLEGE EDUCATION!!!
Posted by: Ceci | March 18, 2008 6:09 PM
Those of you who are so against Senator Obama because he is black....well that's your problem. Get over it. We won't lose any sleep from it. Truth be told is both black and white. I myself WILL NOT vote for him because he's black like me, nor will I vote for Clinton because she is a woman, like me. He is more trustworthy, inspiring and I like what he has to offer on the table. If Clinton is so experienced, then why has it taken her so many years to do anything about the issues at hand?? For those of you who are so behind...you should know that Hillary once willingly worked for a known racist named Goldwater, who was against passing the Civil Rights Act. Do you think we really want to vote for Clinton knowing this and other lies she has told. Maybe that's included in her so called 35 yrs of experience. She has failed at much. So many young soldiers have died from this senseless war, it is sickening. Even if Hillary wins the nominee, Obama will always be much more popular. Obama can get more done in the White House, because he is more likable, so many will work together WITH him and NOT against him. No need for Hillary to win, just to have every bill she trys to pass batted down. I just think that it's a shame that Clinton has had many years to show her work, but she did not do that. By the way, if your spouse becomes president, that does not go on your resume as you having experience, because we all know what kind of work Bill Clinton was getting done!

The only sensible Senior member of the Democratic Party is Bill Clinton, who says his wife Hillary is the best electable candidate for the Presidency of America. I agree with his assessment and judgment.
Bill has the experience and ability to understand the issues, personalities and the pulse of the American electorate.
If Democratic Party goes against his wisdom and Nominate Obama, I am very sure they will be defeated in the General Election. McCain will be our next President, for sure.
The dual scandals of Tony Rezko and pastor Wright stuck around Sen Obama's neck like two cobras, he is just not any different candidate than/from Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton.
Please read what he wrote in his book The Dreams From My Father:
"Never emulate White men and Brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the Blackman, the son of Africa, that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself"
This is the reason he befriended pastor Wright and worshiped in the militant Black anti-White TUCC in Chicago! Remember, Sen Obama never had any substantial time to live with his biological father, who deserted him and mother when he was age 2!
He also writes, "That hate hadn't gone away, blaming White people - some cruel, some ignorant, sometimes a single face, sometimes just a faceless image of a system claiming power over our lives"
This is the reason Michelle Obama never felt proud of America in her entire adult life.
These sentiments are very similar to pastor Wright.
Is Obama a different type of a politician than Jesse or Al Sharpton? NO, NO, NO. Ms. Ferraro and Bill Clinton are right on the money.
Sen Obama is NOT A PRESIDENTIAL TIMBER!!!
A fake Chicago politician, period.

There he goes again, the uniformed you may an idiot pundit. I will give you the difference between the candidates, 10% of policy and platform. Those that know the platforms will see Obama platform better with education and Clinton better with health care. Those differencences are about 2%. Bubba was the 2nd worst CIC of my lifetime, Dubya is 1st. Neither listened to military recommendations and both hurt America in doing so. The media and publics love affair with dirt and innuendo keeps pushing garbage to the front of discussions instead of a failed economy, education system and war.

Blaming Clinton for giving the Republican attack machine talking points to use against Obama is really scraping the bottom of the barrel. And it shows a pathetic refusal to hold him accountable for anything that he has ever said or done. (Haven't we been down THAT road already?)
If Clinton can uncover his hypocrisy, inconsistencies, and questionable associations - do you seriously think that she's saying anything Karl Rove doesn't already know?
Get a grip. Any hole Obama finds himself in, he has dug himself. With no help from Clinton.

I am so sick of Obama playing the race card. The fact is Geraldine Ferrora is right. He is winning because he is black. What white man with 2 years in the Senate would be considered for this job? The black news men and media says, "Well if that was all it took then Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would have won." No they wouldn't and heres why. 84 through 92 was a different time. The only black family on TV then was the Huckstables. Now that black America has become more main stream, the barrier isn't there anymore. We are in a Hip Hop culture. Obama has charisma and great "rockstar" appeal. Its not that he has better plans than Hillary because he doesn't. As a matter of fact all he has done is take her positions and make them his. If you'll notice he has nothing to add when she talks about a subject in a debate. It's because he doesn't have the ideas that she does. The fact that his supporters are younger Americans and African Americans should tell you something. African Americans are voting for him because they just want to see a black man as President. He has figured out that if he is exactly the same on the issues as Hillary he can just run a popularity contest. African Americans say well they are the same as each other so Ill go with the Black guy. And todays youth, lets face it, couldn't tell you who our president is now much less actually know who would be better for this job. The media has pegged this guy as "cool" and kids follow "cool" Adult working Class people don't work that way. They know this is Important so they are actually looking at what their qualifications are and deciding who will help their family get through another year. Like Hillary says in her speech, think of this as if you are "hiring" something for this job. I don't think anyone can say that Obama is better versed on the broad spectrum of issues that this country is facing. Thats why Hillary is known as the one with the "specifics" and he is the one knows as "rhetoric" Think about all this people. Geraldine Ferrora is just pointing out the obvious. Obame is winning a popularity contest. Think of it like this. In high school usually you have a smart nerdy girl that runs for student body president and then you got the dumb jock also running. Now we all know that the nerd would more than likely be our best president to get things done but, we always seem to pick the "cool" dumb jock. Is that what we as a country want? Think about it.

I just wish that all of those who think that Obama is the next JFK would look at the national feeling, concerning the late president, one week prior to his death. The nation was, to say the least, unhappy with his performance. JFK would not have been reelected. His shooting gave him status, not his job as President.
If you don't believe me, check the News articles and the polls taken the week before he was assinated.
Posted by: rodney | March 12, 2008 11:53 AM
By pointing out how he spurns both the establishment of his party, and of his race.
Posted by: Pat | March 11, 2008 10:16 PM
It's too bad that Hillary has to stoop to the "politics as usual" attacks and innuendo that are just going to prove the cynics right - that political contests are reduced to nasty tricks and twists of the tongue. I'm a middle-aged woman who would love to vote for a woman president but I cannot in good conscience vote for Hillary. Not when Obama is putting himself (and his family) out there for scrutiny. He remains eloquent, inspiring and truly Presidential.
Think: Who ARE we as a nation? What path are we going to decide to walk? Do you want to be a proud American? Or do you want to continue to be embarrassed by our lack of integrity and moral judgement as represented by our elected representatives and President?
Think: Concerning the "Commander in Chief" issue - since when does the President declare war? I thought that responsibility was in the domain of the Congress. Let's get back on track here and abide by the Constitution - you know, the document that the President swears to uphold! We're not electing a supreme leader, a "King" here (although the Bush administration has certainly brought us much closer to that idea). Let's remember that there are supposed to be checks and balances in the government and the President is not "running the country" as many of the blogs here seem to suggest.
Think: Come on, fellow citizens, let's get educated before it's too late and think clearly about who we are and where we should be going as a nation before casting your vote.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal" ...
All citizens have the right to vote and have their votes counted. Whole states can not be ethically nor morally disenfranchised, and party leaders should be held responsible and accountable for their lapse in leadership and government. The decision to penalize was unacceptible. The decision to move the dates up was motivated by ?
voting machines? This all just underlines the people leading were unable to lead effectively and find SOLUTIONS.

If Hillary wins some more important states such as Penn, indiana, Kentucky etc., and follows it up with good wins in Florida and Michigan in re-votes, she has a good chance to be the nominee. She should wait until that time to offer the VP spot to Obama. It is inappropriate for her campaign to suggest him as VP because right now he has the lead in delegates and he wants to be president, not VP. She probably has a good lead in the total votes of democratic (blue) and battle ground states, she still needs to wait how the remaining battle ground primary states vote before the VP talk is valid. If she wins Penn, Indiana, Kentucky etc. and also win in Florida and Michigan re-votes, she will increase her vote margin in the blue and battle ground states. Only then the talk of VP for him may be justified. The way I see it, both of them have an even chance to win the nomination as of now. So neither of them need to settle for VP spot.

I am always amazed as to how the American people have one, a very short memory, two, a very short attention span ( in believing everything that someone tells them) and three allow the media to let the Clintons always change the goal post if it does not go in their favor, how is it that Obama has one more states, and this idea that he won't get votes in the General is crazy, democrats will votes for him with his crossover appeal, he has accumulated more delegates even in Texan, and the media in wanting Clinton to win and overcome his lead so badly stated that the momentum was over, she so called won by less than 3% of the vote and now with the caucuses that is questionable.
Most of the votes she received at the last moment was due to the kitchen sink strategy, but those who made up their minds to vote for her, were not going to vote for Obama and looked for a reason, this Resko crap that the press is allowing her to continue to bring up, he is not on trial Resko is, you have dug and dug and the only thing that you can come up with is property that he purchased, remember Obama gave his money to charity, why can't we see the presidential papers or her tax returns to see what she did with Resko donations that she received, or his middle name or his wife's papers from college, let's not forget the scandal in about her senatorial campaign with Peter Paul giving her campaign 1.2 million dollars, which was never used for the campaign, never donated to charity, but there is a court case that is pending that shows Billary and Chelsea will have to testify on charges.
WHY IS THE PRESS NOT BRINGING THIS UP.? And her 35 years of experience is a joke and makes me want to throw up when I hear it, do the comparison of her 8 years in office passing legislation or getting it passed and Obama's 8 years in the state senate and 3 years in the senate and the important legislation that he has passed and how he has always been able to cross over party lines, but not Hillary the fighter who only wants to get back in to show the (Right winged conspirators) republicans and rub it in their face.
The bottom line is if Florida and Michigan are allowed as is to be counted it is not fair, he was not on the ballot, and so what if he chose not to by following the rules, and they Super delegates can wait for the Convention and choose Hillary, I will never vote for her, it will be McCain or stay at home, and it would be a sad day, because all the youth that Obama brought into the campaign not Clinton, she only wanted the youth after she saw what Obama was doing, just like she is insulting the states that she did not win, or have very small delegates stating that in the general they won't count. Hopefully you guys will read and learn. But before you make a comment about Barack Obama do your homework, ask the right quesitons.
Posted by: Beverly Sims | March 10, 2008 6:25 PM
Hillary offers Barack the VP slot. Only the Clintons would have the audacity to offer the person in the lead the #2 position. Amazing! Guess the Clintons were having a "Get behind the bus moment"
when they came up with this theory.

Isn't it just pathetic that the supposedly most progressive country in the world whose Presidential race is on the world-wide stage to be scrutinized and debated whether in fact, democracy is the way to go... has to resort to "attacks" on one's opponent to be on par in the political arena. What message are we sending to our children, that the leaders of our nation has to engage in nasty, negative tactics because it's politics?
I find this all disgusting and very immature that these folks cannot run on their merit and achievements but instead has to do character assassinations on their opponents before they are considered politically savvy.... so when we turn out a nation of negative, under-handed college graduates employing the same techniques used by our politicians, let's all slap each other on the backs and tell them...way to go.
Posted by: NERAKAMI | March 10, 2008 1:00 PM
McCain has enough experience at manipulation and knowledge of politics to deal with Obama.
Clinton isn't giving McCain ammunition. Clinton is giving the democrats a very VERY tiny example of what McCain can dish out.
If Obama and his supporters are worried about Clinton making things difficult, they haven't seen anything yet. If Obama can't address and manage what Clinton dishes out, then he doesn't stand a chance against McCain.
Clinton is simply trying to help prepare Obama for what lies ahead...and personally, I hope she keeps it up.
If I'm going to vote for Obama in November, I sure as heck want to know he knows how to fight back - not dodge and duck.

A "democracy" will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury.
From that moment on, the majority always vote for the candidates who promise the "most benefits" from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.

Rebecka, you're absolutely right. It's like Woody Allen once said, "90% of success is just showing up." So long as Obama keeps "showing up" after McCain has talked, he can ignore McCain and keep to the high road by answering questions and being the contrast.

Hillary Clinton is running a racist campaign and she doesn't know it. She really says things that racist people pick up on referring not to let Obama take the white house. Rush Limbaugh is helping Hillary Clinton by running a secret anti-Obama campaign to get his sect to vote for Hillary this November. But, "Rolling Stone" magazine won't let that happen. The executive editor said, he didn't like the way Hillary campigned and it disgusted him. Rolling Stone's readers are going to rock the vote!

jhbyer, Obama doesn't have to mimic McCain. All he has to do is speak scedule his speaking engagements just before or just after McCains. That was pretty clear on several occasions so far.
In fact, it was so noticeable that the Newscasters on all the Cable channels mentioned it each time. McCain could be in that commercial where the professor is droning on, boring his audience to death, and the kid says, "The End!" McCain also drones on and on and on......

Is Obama fully prepared to be one heartbeat away from Hillary? Yes Hillary thinks he is, but she doesn't think his fully prepared to pick up the phone at 3 am. "Some of us are ready to be vice-president and some of us are not." That's what she said. Well, something like that anyway.

Comment: YOU MIGHT BE AN IDIOT:-)
If you think Barack Obama with little or no experience would be better than Hillary Clinton with 35 years experience.
You Might Be An Idiot!
If you think that Obama with no experience can fix an economy on the verge of collapse better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) led the greatest economic expansion, and prosperity in American history.
You Might Be An Idiot!
If you think that Obama with no experience fighting for universal health care can get it for you better than Hillary Clinton. Who anticipated this current health care crisis back in 1993, and fought a pitched battle against overwhelming odds to get universal health care for all the American people.
You Might Be An Idiot!
If you think that Obama with no experience can manage, and get us out of two wars better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) went to war only when he was convinced that he absolutely had to. Then completed the mission in record time against a nuclear power. AND DID NOT LOSE THE LIFE OF A SINGLE AMERICAN SOLDIER. NOT ONE!

If you think that Obama with little or no education experience is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) made higher education affordable for every American. And created higher job demand and starting salary's than they had ever been before or since.
You Might Be An Idiot!
If you think that Obama with no experience will be better than Hillary Clinton who spent 8 years at the right hand of President Bill Clinton. Who is already on record as one of the greatest Presidents in American history.
You Might Be An Idiot!
If you think that you can change the way Washington works with pretty speeches from Obama, rather than with the experience, and political expertise of two master politicians ON YOUR SIDE like Hillary and Bill Clinton..
You Might Be An Idiot!
If you think all those Republicans voting for Obama in the Democratic primaries, and caucuses are doing so because they think he is a stronger Democratic candidate than Hillary Clinton. :-)

Here is the scenario: Obama is elected and the world goes to hell in a handbag (Mother's favorite saying). Rush Limbaugh will be crowing he tried to do the right thing for America by supporting Clinton. At great personal turmoil he might add. lol
Hey Chris Matthews; You know that chuckle when you insist/ask my favorite Republican (the only one unwilling to lie to your face) if they want to run against Hillary? That is suppressed glee thinking you are buying into the deception. I laugh when Republicans say they will be energized if it is Clinton, as if the past year(s) of dejection and apathy for this election was not a direct result of facing the prospect. You should know it as gamesmanship against she they fear most.

Virtually all discussion on the presidential election race reads much as commentary on a horserace, or basketball, or football game. Needed discussion regarding the effects of any of the three:Obama, Clinton, or McCain on truly important issues are completely ignored by them all. That would include all the media as well.
Is there something wrong with wanting to hear their views vis a vis the Constitution; freedom and liberty; an over sized and zealous government and the protection of our country and it's legal citizens?
With the clarion calls of impending economic doom, one can not help but think: Here we go again, media overstatement of questionable data to support their "agenda", as it were. It is bad enough not knowing whom to trust, it is worse knowing the aims, the goals, of those entrusted with the responsibility to advise us properly, and efficiently.
I am not surprised at all when my grandchildren ask me about other countries, and whether such countries would be good places to live. Saddened, but not surprised.

You ask how Reps would run against hope?
Barak argued to deny a President the ability to strike a target we were told in a State of the Union Address was seeking nuclear ability and might already have dirty bomb material to give Osama Bin Laden. That we had to use force to allow inspectors back in and prevent that. 900+ pieces of misinformation to support that fear!
Mc Cain will work the question of judgment
Will we really elect a President who would do nothing when faced with similar situations (like Iran)? Would a President Obama sit on his hands in future times of national peril? OK, I can forgive lack of military service, but doesn't he have to know what a President's first duty is?
I can here McCain now, "Where were you on 911? What does that day mean to you?"
Why did you refuse to take a stance, not vote for or against, giving our President the authority to attack Iranian militants coming into Iraq to help those killing our troops.
Are you really prepared to use the full force of America's might (including the nuclear deterrent policy) to safeguard America? You hesitated then, who's to say you would not again. He who hesitates...will... lose our country. Pacifism will embolden or enemies. This is too easy, I could go on forever!
We have seen Hillary respond prudently in many pressure situations including 911 and has taken real heat since the 90's! What type of pressure situations has Barak faced? Just recently he refused to vote, failed to take a stand, either for or against striking Iranian militia inside of Iraq. We can not afford he that hesitates.
To say Barak is untried and untested is more than fair and in comparison to McCain or Clinton it is quite the understatement!

Hillary's Resume
Hillary Clinton has been telling America that she is the most qualified candidate for president based on her 'record,' which she says includes her eight years in the White House as First Lady - or 'co-president' - and her seven years in the Senate.
Here is a reminder of what that record includes:
- As First Lady, Hillary assumed authority over Health Care Reform, a process that cost the taxpayers over $13 million. She told both Bill Bradley and Patrick Moynihan, key votes needed to pass her legislation, that she would 'demonize' anyone who opposed it. But it was opposed; she couldn't even get it to a vote in a Congress controlled by her own party. (And in the next election, her party lost control of both the House and Senate.)
- Hillary assumed authority over selecting a female Attorney General. Her first two recommendations, Zoe Baird and Kimba Wood, were forced to withdraw their names from consideration. She then chose Janet Reno. Janet Reno has since been described by Bill himself as 'my worst mistake.'
- Hillary recommended Lani Guanier for head of the Civil Rights Commission. When Guanier's radical views became known, her name had to be withdrawn.
- Hillary recommended her former law partners, Web Hubbell, Vince Foster, and William Kennedy for positions in the Justice Department, White House staff, and the Treasury, respectively. Hubbell was later imprisoned, Foster committed suicide? (explained death), and Kennedy was forced to resign.
- Hillary also recommended a close friend of the Clintons, Craig Livingstone, for the position of director of White House security. When Livingstone was investigated for the improper access of up to 900 FBI files of Clinton enemies ("Filegate") and the widespread use of drugs by White House staff, both Hillary and her husband denied knowing him. FBI agent Dennis Sculimbrene confirmed in a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in 1996, both the drug use and Hillary's involvement in hiring Livingstone. After that, the FBI closed its White House Liaison Office, after serving seven presidents for over thirty years.
***********
- In order to open "slots" in the White House for her friends the Thomasons (to whom millions of dollars in travel contracts could be awarded), Hillary had the entire staff of the White House Travel Office fired; they were reported to the FBI for 'gross mismanagement' and their reputations ruined. After a thirty-month investigation, only one, Billy Dale, was charged with a crime - mixing personal money with White House funds when he cashed checks. The jury acquitted him in less than two hours.
- Another of Hillary's assumed duties was directing the 'bimbo eruption squad' and scandal defense:
---- She urged her husband not to settle the Paula Jones lawsuit.
---- She refused to release the Whitewater documents, which led to the appointment of Ken Starr as Special Prosecutor. After $80 million dollars of taxpayer money was spent, Starr's investigation led to Monica Lewinsky, which led to Bill lying about and later admitting his affairs.
---- Then they had to settle with Paula Jones after all.
---- And Bill lost his law license for lying to the grand jury
---- And Bill was impeached by the House.
---- And Hillary almost got herself indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice (she avoided it mostly because she repeated, 'I do not recall,' 'I have no recollection,' and 'I don't know' 56 times under oath).
- Hillary wrote 'It Takes a Village,' demonstrating her Socialist viewpoint.
- Hillary decided to seek election to the Senate in a state she had never lived in. Her husband pardoned FALN terrorists in order to get Latino support and the New Square Hassidim to get Jewish support. Hillary also had Bill pardon her brother's clients, for a small fee, to get financial support.
- Then Hillary left the White House, but later had to return $200,000 in White House furniture, china, and artwork she had stolen.
- In the campaign for the Senate, Hillary played the 'woman card' by portraying her opponent (Lazio) as a bully picking on her.
- Hillary's husband further protected her by asking the National Archives to withhold from the public until 2012 many records of their time in the White House, including much of Hillary's correspondence and her calendars. (There are ongoing lawsuits to force the release of those records.)
- As the junior Senator from New York, Hillary has passed no major legislation. She has deferred to the senior Senator (Schumer) to tend to the needs of New Yorkers, even on the hot issue of medical problems of workers involved in the cleanup of Ground Zero after 9/11.
- Hillary's one notable vote; supporting the plan to invade Iraq, she has since disavowed.
Quite a Rap Sheet or resume. Sounds more like an organized crime family's rap sheet.
The most amazing thing that real Americans ask:
How in hell can trash like this be elevated to this level and become a serious candidate for President of the United States.
God help us!

Bush's contempt of Obama foreign policy is just the tip of the Republican iceberg about to hit Barak.
There are only two clear issues, UHC and National Security.
Somehow debating these is negatively attacking poor Barak and bringing down the Democratic Party!
The issue in Democratic domain is universal health care and despite Barak's attempts to suggest otherwise UHC is clearly dependent on Hillary. Hillary Lite won't do.
The biggest issue is National Security and will be fiercely challenged by the other party. What? Do you think if Hillary does not bring it up the Republicans won't either?
Bush's contempt of Obama foreign policy is just the tip of the Republican iceberg about to hit Barak.
Barak did not flip-flop fast enough (in the debate) on reaching out to dictators as President. Bush hit him soundly as warm up practice before Obama could cover his naivety.
The real issue with his foreign affairs stances is Barak looks like such a wimp! Wimps are not elected President. I now know why I was struck by the turban picture, it's the equivalent of Dukakis and the helmet; both suffer the wimp card.

To the person who said Hillary is not releasing her taxes because of excess contributions doesn't know what he is talking about. Her taxes are not released because she filed joint returns with an ex-President and they have to be reviewed.
As for negative campaigning, it was Obama who was negative first when he lied and his henchmen lied and implied in very strong terms Bill Clinton was a racist, using ?code? words. (I guess Obama's supporters think Obama was right in this negativity? I assume they watch the news when they see and hear?) That was downright nasty and definitely not true and we all know he did it to get the edge in the election. It was what got him started and what is being said behind Hillary's back. The news media has said it is okay for Obama to do that. Obama let them get by with it, and I'm sure he knew it in advance. Hillary should have went after him for that. Anything said about his drugs and deals with the Iraqi businessman connected to some bad guy is fair game. He let it out before the media to make it seem less of a liability. It was a bad example for our young people. Implying in such strong words that we Democrats are racist if we don't believe in him or support him is a disgrace. I take offfense at the fact that I'm supposed to treat him differently and not hold him accountable for what he says and does.
I can't accept that negative campaign he pulled and then tried to say how clean he was. The media dropped the ball and nobody paid attention.

So Barak, alias Hillary_Lite, continues to sing his one-hit-wonder 'I knew Saddam had no weapons' hoping, praying, it get him all the way to the most powerful position in the world.
Well let me give just a taste of reality:
What happened the news of 900+ bits of (erroneous, but presented as fact) information/news supporting the need to strike Iraq? A State of the Union Address included. It is too big a story to be suppressed forever. Barak will have to explain opposition to striking Iraq in the face of all the "intelligence".
Barak is not inoculated against questions about inexperience and being called a naive liberal as Clinton may be. Clinton could not even begin to prepare Barak for the Republican onslaught about Barak's qualification to lead and ability to act in order to protect America. I can Hear It Now
Barak argued to deny a President the ability to strike a target we were told in a State of the Union Address was seeking nuclear ability and might already have dirty bomb material to give Osama Bin Laden. 900+ pieces of misinformation to support that fear!

OBAMA, AUCHI, REZKO: One degree of separation...
Our future President is in bed with an Iraqi billionaire.
A must read for any responsible American........
The money transfer raises the question of whether funds from Iraqi born, Nadhmi Auchi, one of Britain's wealthiest men, helped Mr Obama buy his mock Georgian mansion in Chicago.
A company related to Mr Auchi, who has a conviction for corruption in France, registered the loan to Mr Obama's bagman Antoin "Tony" Rezko on May 23 2005. Mr Auchi says the loan, through the Panamanian company Fintrade Services SA, was for $3.5 million.
Three weeks later, Mr Obama bought a house on the city's South Side while Mr Rezko's wife bought the garden plot next door from the same seller on the same day, June 15.
Mr Obama says he never used Mrs Rezko's still-empty lot, which could only be accessed through his property. (Uhm, we laymen call it a backyard!) But he admits he paid his gardener to mow the lawn.
It should be mentioned that Obama got around a $300,000 discount on the $2 million plus house. The sellers deny there was any quid pro quo with the two buyers - that there is no connection between Mrs. Rezko paying full price for the lot next door and the bargain they gave the Obamas.
That may be so but the question is, where did Mrs. Rezko get the money?
It is unclear how Mrs Rezko could have afforded the downpayment of $125,000 and a $500,000 mortgage for the original $625,000 purchase of the garden plot at 5050 South Greenwood Ave.
In a sworn statement a year later, Mrs Rezko said she got by on a salary of $37,000 and had $35,000 assets. Mr Rezko told a court he had "no income, negative cash flow, no liquid assets, no unencumbered assets [and] is significantly in arrears on many of his obligations."
Auchi is emerging as a key figure in the corruption trial of Rezko and also played a part in one of Rezko's attempts to exploit his relationship with Obama. Obama denies he ever did any favors for Rezko or his associates but the crooked Obama fundraiser told prosecutors that after Auchi gave him another "loan," he asked Obama to intervene with the State Department in order to get a visa for Auchi who was being denied entry into the US:
Prosecutors say that, after Mr Auchi was unable to enter the United States in 2005, Mr Rezko approached the US State Department to get him a visa and apparently asked "certain Illinois government officials to do the same." Mr Obama denies he was approached. Mr Auchi's lawyer has emphasised to The Times that it would be entirely false to imply that money had been lent by GMH to Mr Rezko in return for Mr Rezko seeking to assist Mr Auchi to obtain a visa. The two men's relationship, the lawyer stressed, was a busines s one.
Just who is this guy Auchi?
Allow me to introduce you to Nadhmi Auchi. He was charged in the 1950s with being an accomplice of Saddam Hussein, when the future tyrant was acquiring his taste for blood. He was investigated in the 1980s for his part in alleged bribes to the fabulously corrupt leaders of post-war Italy. In the 1990s, the Belgium Ambassador to Luxembourg claimed that Auchi's bank held money Saddam and Colonel Gadaffi had stolen from their luckless peoples. In 2002, officers from the Serious Fraud Squad raided the offices of one of Auchi's drug companies as part of an investigation of what is alleged to be the biggest swindle ever of the NHS. With allegations, albeit unproven, like these hanging over him, wouldn't you think that British MPs would have the sense to stay away?
Perhaps you would, but I forgot to add a final fact about Mr Auchi: he is the thirteenth-richest man in Britain, and he has been able to collect British politicians the way other people collect stamps.
First of all, his business dealings make Rezko's kickback schemes for political contributions look like the minor leagues of sleaze. Auchi had a hand in the biggest political and corporate scandal in post war Europe, the so-called "Elf Affair" where $2 billion francs up and disappeared from the French state oil company Elf.
In a fantastically complex scheme, oil company execs used the state owned company as their own piggy bank, loading up on goodies:
The Auchi case confirms that the political class is attracted to the sleaziest characters in capitalism. Auchi's conviction was a part of the gigantic investigation into the corruption of the Elf oil company, the biggest fraud inquiry in Europe since the Second World War. Elf became a private bank for its executives who spent £200 million on political favours, mistresses, jewellery, fine art, villas and apartments. By any definition, this was news.
It was only due to the persistence of the French investigating magistrates that Auchi got to Paris. They issued an international arrest warrant in 2000. For three years, the Home Office refused to deport him. Two MPs, Vaz and an unnamed politician, made inquiries. Renaud van Ruymbeke, the French magistrate leading the investigation into the Elf scandal, all but accused Britain of sheltering fugitives. Only after his protests, and pressure from this newspaper did the Home Office relent. Then there were Auchi's relations with Iraq which have a certain topicality.
What are those connections to Iraq? Nothing less than being an early and enthusiastic supporter of Saddam Hussein. He has admitted to taking part in the assassination attempt on former Iraqi prime minister Qasim which Saddam also took part. He must have realized the nature of Saddam because he left Iraq but kept doing business with the regime:
Auchi's brother was among the many Baathists killed by Saddam, but the execution did not inhibit Auchi's business dealings with Iraq which, he says, didn't stop until the Gulf war of 1991. His first coup in the West was to broker a deal to sell Italian frigates to the Iraqi Defence Ministry, for which he received $17m in commission. Italian investigators claimed that a Panamanian company owned by Auchi was used to funnel allegedly illegal payments. Auchi denied he had done anything wrong.
In the mid-1980s he got to know Pierfrancesco Pacini Battaglia, a man whose role in directing money to politicians led Italians to call him 'the one below God'. Saddam Hussein had ordered the construction of a pipeline from Iraq to Saudi Arabia. Battaglia and Auchi secured the contract for a Franco-Italian consortium. In a statement to New York lawyers Battaglia alleged he knew how. 'To acquire the contract it was necessary, as is usual, especially in Middle Eastern countries, to pay commission to characters close to the Iraqi government... In this case, the international intermediary who dealt with this matter was the Iraqi, Nadhmi Auchi.' Auchi has denied any wrong-doing.
Truly. Elegant. Sleaze.
Rezko was into Auchi for upwards of $27 million - monies that curiously never got paid back. But what Rezko had was a stake in a big land development project that he was only too happy to give Auchi a piece:
According to court documents, Mr Rezko's lawyer said his client had "longstanding indebtedness" to Mr Auchi's GMH. By June 2007 he owed it $27.9 million.
Under a Loan Forgiveness Agreement described in court, Mr Auchi lent Mr Rezko $3.5 million in April 2005 and $11 million in September 2005, as well as the $3.5 million transferred in April 2007.
That agreement provided for the outstanding loans to be "forgiven" in return for a stake in the 62-acre Riverside Park development.
The Obama-Rezko relationship must be understood in the context of the influence peddling, the casual corruption, the cronysm, the favoritism shown in less than open bidding - all part of a city and state political culture where the politician, the businessman, and the crook frequently rub elbows and sometimes wear each other's hats. Obama hiring the daughter of a Rezko associate to work in his office (after Rezko had helped raise tens of thousands of dollars for his campaign) is no big deal. But this kind of "favor" done for Rezko is a different story:
The Chicago Tribune: "On June 13, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that as a state senator, Obama wrote letters to city and state officials supporting Rezko's successful bid to get more than $14 million from taxpayers to build apartments for senior citizens. The Sun-Times said the deal included $855,000 in development fees for Rezko and his partner, Allison S. Davis, Obama's former boss, according to records from the project, which was four blocks outside Obama's state Senate district.
Obama now regrets his association with Rezko and has given $150,000 to charity in order to atone for his sins. Sorry Barry, or should I call you Barack now, it don't work that way.
In the course of a 17 year relationship with Rezko, it is impossible to quantify the amount in contributions funnelled to Obama by Rezko using his ill gotten gains. Nor can it be ascertained at this time if the favors done by Obama for Rezko - large and small - involve him in illegal activities. It certainly has him enmeshed with some extremely shady characters in Rezko and Auchi.
At this point, unless there is a deliberate, concerted effort by the large media outlets to allow this story to die once Rezko is convicted, I find it probable that other revelations are yet to come that will show Obama to be just another machine politician, skirting the edge of ethics and the law - perhaps even going over the line and engaging in criminal activities.
Obama is not the Agent of Change. He is a calculating politician who plays the game the same way politicians have been playing it for hundreds of years - receiving money in exchange for favors from government for his friends and cronies. Obama be brought down for the influence selling, the sweetheart deals, the pay for favors, and all the rest of this sleazy mess. This vetting should have taken place before the primaries. The public can no longer hold the mainstream press accountable for letting the "powers that be" behind the media stop their reportage. Blogs and word of mouth seem to be the only honest way to have an unimpeded exchange of information. So spread the word!

I want to take a break from the referendum on gender, race and white guilt, but it is like what they say about train wrecks; horrible yet irresistible to watch. In my wildest thoughts I would not have believed media would be analyzing (later in 2009) the role hate politics, racism, reverse racism and (especially) white guilt had in electing a President. Well, I guess I knew hate politics would be directed toward Clinton, but thought it would be her Republican rivals not dummy Dems. Political blogs are the Y2K version of politics of self-destruction or Hillary Haters Anonymous (Ken Starr is Pres.).
Caution; this small minority has a loud voice and manipulates other hater types.
The map of Clinton/Obama wins follows the old Mason -Dixon Line and seems ripe to spin a racial divide. This election has turned racial politics upside down as some (including Obama and media) simultaneously interject it into the conversation and then back away seeking the high ground. My suspicious nature when it comes to politics leads me to wonder why. Clues are that predominately White states have gone for Barak while those more integrated, those who live out the race issues in ordinary life go for Hillary. I set aside the Black voter because I feel like I know that dynamic and typical racism seems not to be playing a substantial role. I am left to speculate upon another phenomenon most are reluctant to examine; White guilt. My working definition of white guilt is fear of being called racist. I saw its power when Bill Clinton was called racist when he tried to question Obama's qualifications to be Commander in Chief. I also saw media be reluctant and slow to question anything about Barak, leaving the potential next POTUS unexamined. Again, call me cynical, some are saying worse, but I wonder why credentials and character of someone interviewing for leader of the free world is off limits. Why are accusations of racism for political purposes not seen through?
Especially when I hear Hillary labeled negative at the same time the Clinton character assassination goes full steam ahead and aided by media. Any suggestion we look at Obama is countered by 15 year old accusations proved false in what was the largest scale witch hunt in American history led by Ken Starr.
But I digress from the thorny issues of racism and white guilt. In today's America, both racism and white guilt are often not conscious attitudes, at least for the majority. Racism lives under the surface because of its ugliness and our unwillingness to face the possibility. White guilt is the response in our semi-conscious, internal battle to feel good about ourselves. It is the way we deny the racist tendency every human has, beginning with placing special value on our immediate then extended family and continuing through neighborhood, tribe and even on to national patriotism. It is a fine line between looking after your own and racism. Not many dare take too long a look and that includes me, so I will conclude
My thought is the Mason Dixon Line reveals a divide in the power of white guilt. People south of the Line may be able to look past the emotions of race and be manipulated less because they live with the race issue everyday. Mississippi is supposed to go for Barak but no one is saying why. Will the Black vote carry the day? Or will a lesser degree of the white guilt Obama plays/preys on buoy the Clinton comeback?
I would like to see more of the current sea-change in momentum towards Clinton, especially among Blacks, that would reassure me people are beginning to vote with their minds instead of with manipulated emotions.

Chuckamok, loved your post on Al. That he hasn't endorsed Hillary strikes me as a highly significant negative, but my guess is he'll stop short of endorsing her opponent to avoid the mini-scandal the press would love to hype.

How come no media is mentioning the Peter Paul trial going on right now in California???Peter Paul is the guy who gave Hilary over a million dollars during her campaign for the Senate. Last time I checked the limit was $2300. But she accepted it anyway. That would consider her to be a snake!!! She probably did the same thing in this campaign (took way too much money from somebody) and that is why she is hiding her taxes. If this had been Obama, he would have been disqualified from the race. But since it's Hilary, they brush it under the rug.....but only until she wins the nominee and then the media will pull all of her dirt out so that she will lose to McCain. Wake up people this is a set up to get the Republicans back in the white house. and who the heck is Hilary to say that McCain would be a better president than Barack. How can you endorse a Republican and say you are with the Democratic Party????

Bill Clinton profits from company tied to felon, China
March 7, 2008
By Jim McElhatton - The spring before his wife began her White House campaign, former President Bill Clinton earned $700,000 for his foundation by selling stock that he had been given from an Internet search company that was co-founded by a convicted felon and backed by the Chinese government, public records show.
Mr. Clinton had gotten the nonpublicly traded stock from Accoona Corp. back in 2004 as a gift for giving a speech at a company event. He landed the windfall by selling the 200,000 shares to an undisclosed buyer in May 2006, commanding $3.50 a share at a time when the company was reporting millions of dollars of losses, according to interviews.
A spokesman for the William J. Clinton Foundation declined to identify the buyer who was willing to pay so much for a struggling company's stock, saying only that the transaction was handled by a securities broker. It occurred seven months before Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton announced her bid to run for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.
The spokesman, Ben Yarrow, declined last week to say whether Mr. Clinton knew about the Chinese government's connection to Accoona or the felony fraud conviction of one of the company's founders.
"President Clinton gave a speech; he did not endorse a product," Mr. Yarrow said.
The $700,000 capital gains was listed on the tax returns of Mr. Clinton's foundation that were reviewed by The Washington Times.
The lack of disclosure about the buyer and the general activities of former presidents' foundations troubles some ethics experts. ...

Vote him in and you will still see...No Bin Laden anywhere, except on video to let us know he is still out there!
To all of you who are threatening to jump parties, SHAME ON YOU! Where is your loyalty? Apparently you're NOT equipped with any!

Hillary the Vampire will refuse to stay in her casket until Al Gore drives a renewable-forest wooden spike through her heart (if he can find it).
C'mon, Al, you hate the Clintons. Hillary usurped your Veep job (if we are to believe her two-fer slop) and Bill deserted your election campaign, so you'd lose and pave the way for a third Billary term.
C'mon, Al, gird those ample loins and throw your weight (carefully) behind Obama.
C'mon, Al, the time is nigh. And drag the wimpering Edwards along with you, for good measure.

This country has turned into a continent of cynics and pessimists who spit in the face of anything optimistic or new. For me this whole presidential election comes down to one question. What kind of world do you want to live in? From what I've been hearing, especially on this comment thread, is that you would rather live in a world of fear rather than take the time or effort to envision, let alone work for, something new and possibly better. Given the current state of the U.S. economy and our standing in the world, it would seem to me that instead of bashing someone who wants to improve all of this, you ridicule him for not seemingly not be as tough, mean or ruthless as the other candidates. Sen. Obama is being tough, very tough indeed. He is refusing to go down into the bowels of hell just to win an election. He is sticking to the premise that this country is better than that. In this current climate of cynicism, despair and fear, that is a lot tougher to do than slander, rant and rave about the media being mean to you.
Don't you get it yet!!! If you put a tough, mean-spirited, divisive person in the white house you are going to get a tough, mean-spirited and ruthless country. Doesn't sound too appetizing to me. And before anyone starts to rant about how our President needs to be tough because the world is a dangerous place, I am very much aware of that as well. However, I also realize that except for a small fraction of fundamentalists around the world, the majority of people everywhere just want to be happy and raise families that have a chance to be happy. Even though cultures may differ, the common thread is, has and always will be the pursuit of happiness. So again I will ask the American people to ponder the question - what kind of world, country do you want to live in and leave for your children?

Obama is all hat and no cattle. All of these criticisms of Hillary Clinton are Republican talking points. Barack Obama is what we call the "me too" candidate. Everytime Hillary Clinton makes a point in the debate and proposes a plan, all Barack Obama can say is, "Me, too." What is really bothering all the Obamanistas is that finally their man is being exposed for what he is. He is not above the fray. His name was mentioned twice in the opening remarks of the Rezko trial. And, when Chicago reporters, who are a little less adoring of the boy wonder, were on the plane with him for a press conference, he left after 8 questions because he did not want to answer the real questions concerning the corruption that surrounds him. If the Obama supporters think he is getting heat now, wait until the general election. This is nothing. Then, Democrats will really find out what an empty suit he is but it will be too late for the Democratic Party by then. Obama cannot beat McCain. He has absolutely no credentials. In fact, he sounds like Bush: "A uniter not a divider." Remember that phrase the last time it was used? You can see where it got the country. People are losing their homes, their jobs, their health insurance. They need more than Ra!Ra! politics. They needs plans, solutions and leadership. For all those supporters of Obama who cannot name one single accomplishment of their leader when asked, Good Luck in the general election if you make it that far.

I have voted independent in every election, and this one also.
But,I have never heard any one ask this question. How will Senator Obama reach across the isle, and be one who unites as he claims he can, after he has accused Senator Clinton many times for voting for Bush to go invade Iraq? Shouldn't he get his hand slapped, instead of having his hand shaken, by other Democrats and the Republicans alike, who also voted to give Bush that authority for the very same reasons Senator Clinton stated she voted yes? It is a big issue since S Obama was never present to have to put his head on the proverbial block for that vote. How can S Obama "have his cake, and eat it too"?
Maybe he will fend off that issue with one word, "Change." It has worked before with many people, many times.

It is funny how in the tank Obama's supporters are for him--they can not see his gaffes for what they are. The rest of us, who are trying to look at this objectively, see Obama for what he is--just another politician using the rhetoric for the day. He has no plan, no ideas, no real knowledge of what he would actually do. He may get elected based on his words, but the country will fall apart afterwards if he has no plan for actions.

What do you mean there's nothing wrong with being an "old white republican'? Have you seen the headlines this morning on what is happening with jobs, housing and Iraq? Not to mention the bomb in NY and the threatening letters to congressmen.
Believe me, there is plenty wrong with being an old, white republican these days. They had their best shot with Bush and they flat out blew it. Not it is time to try something completely opposite of what old white dudes like to do.

That so many of my fellow Dems here have expressed their commitment to honesty above winning in November gives me hope for the Party and, yes, it follows, hope for winning in November based upon the strength of our principles. It's not the candidates, per se, but we voters who are the Party. If Hillary isn't nominated, I foresee her pulling a Lieberman. Bless his heart, he's reduced himself to a single issue that pits him against us, his ex. That single issue, to his credit, is not himself, but the Middle East. Major Koontz expressed precisely my feeling that Hillary has reduced her candidacy to a single issue, herself.

The questioner has the point, and the answer misses it. You can't even congratulate LBJ on civil rights legislation without the Obama camp charging "racist!" McCain doesn't just have to be delicate when talking about drugs and the like, he's in the difficult position of having to at least disavow, and in the worst case apologize for, every nutjob smear coming from the hard right.

Mrs. Clinton, hey!
How many lies did you tell today?
Mrs. Clinton's strengths are in manipulation of the media and rousing the demons still powerful in US society. The (white) media has repeated her "See me (white) woman whine." "A (white) wife of a US President has a harder time in US society than a black man." She has demonized Senator Obama, making his skin color darker in her attack ads, putting out photos of him in so-called Muslim garb, insinuating that he may not be Christian after all, lying about his NAFTA position, fear-mongering, and calling him a liar. All this time voters have been rewarding her and the nation watches as the media and the Democratic party WINK WINK at Mrs. Clinton's obvious cheating ways. Mrs. Clinton's return from the brink of defeat is the return of Richard Nixon.
Hillary Clinton returns
As Richard Nixon!!
What a tragic commentary on US society....

This blog is repeating the lie that Obama told the people of Ohio one thing, and the Canadian government another. As it turns out, it looks like it was the Clinton campaign that did the back channel assurances.
It's amazing that this got pinned on Obama. As if the community organizer who has always said he was opposed to NAFTA because it didn't ensure protections for workers and the environment is somehow a secret free market absolutist. But Clinton, who is on record as supporting NAFTA, skates on the issue when it's far more plausible that she would tell the Canadians that her NAFTA rhetoric was political posturing.
This issue has been the most unfair reporting of the entire campaign so far.
This is outrageous!

What this does is remind me that Every time you introduce a Clinton into the equation it turns the stomach. This is the politics of the past and what we all "say" we hate. I, for one, am tired of being embarrassed for my country because of Bush, now I feel that same shame when I look at this woman who actually things she will do a better job at healing the country, I say NO WAY. Clinton is more of a divider and possesses the same bad judgement Bush has. Is this what it comes to - who can tell the most lies and bloody up the opponent gets into the White House. You are right - Clinton has experiece with being divisive and shamefull. Is that what we want, again? Cont me out. I will vote for Obama on faith because he is such a better person and is brilliant. I think after witnesses where all the current experience has led this country, that's more than enough!

NAFTA comment implicated Clinton's campaign, not Obama's
Posted CNN.com: 02:20 PM ET 5/6/2008
Clinton campaign denies Canadian report on NAFTA comments
(CNN) - Hillary Clinton's campaign is denying a Canadian report Thursday that suggests her campaign called representatives of that nation's government to re-assure them that despite campaign rhetoric, they would not seek changes to NAFTA - an allegation they used against Barack Obama's campaign in the days leading up to Tuesday's critical primary votes.
"Unlike the Obama campaign, we can and do flatly deny this report and urge the Canadian government to reveal the name of anyone they think they heard from," Clinton spokesman Phil Singer said in a statement.
Shortly before the Ohio primary, the Canadian network CTV broadcast a report that Obama economic adviser Austan Goolsbee had told officials with the Canadian consulate in Chicago that the campaign would not look to alter the trade agreement, even though the Illinois senator had pledged to do so.
That report became a lightning rod on the campaign trail in Ohio, where NAFTA is deeply unpopular.
The Canadian government has said it is investigating the source of the leak. The Canadian Press reported Thursday that the comment that sparked the original story may have come from Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper's chief of staff, Ian Brodie - and that hisremark had implicated Clinton's campaign, not Obama's. The Thursday story also said CTV's Washington bureau had initially decided to report on Clinton. The New York senator was mentioned in the final report, but it focused on Obama's aide.
The Canadian Press said government officials did not deny the conversation took place, but that Brodie denied discussing either candidate.
Earlier this week, the Obama campaign admitted Goolsbee and consulate officials had spoken, but not under the direction of the campaign, and said that a leaked Canadian government memo implying otherwise had mischaracterized the substance of the discussion.
On Monday, the Canadian Embassy in Washington issued a statement on the controversy that "there was no intention to convey, in any way, that Senator Obama and his campaign team were taking a different position in public from views expressed in private, including about NAFTA."

When this race started, I chose to work for Barack Obama. I did, however, expect to support the Democratic nominee. Then, Senator Clinton said that she and John McCain and not Senator Obama had crossed the Commander-in-Chief threshold.
Based on this statement I've decided I will no longer be able to support Mrs. Clinton if she is the nominee. Perhaps, I can be persuaded otherwise, but it doesn't look good. I'm sure that many of my fellow veterans and others with my background will not be able to support Mrs. Clinton if she continues to place her own ambition over the welfare of the Democratic Party.

cfc, I wholeheartedly concur. Regarding your observation that female leaders haven't brought anything new to leadership, my theory is that those hormones that make women and men so different in their twenties, which are known to sharply decline in both sexes as we age, in their absence, leave us more and more alike. Hence, men mellow, women get ballsy.

While hardly original like Andres', the best strike I see John making is "age before beauty" using that famous quip of Reagan's on Barack, the exact words I can't remember, being old myself. Melding himself with the Gipper won't be easy , however, because Republicans have mythologized the moderate out of him, which McCain will remind them of at his peril.

This has been a strange year for progressives.
For a long time we have waited for the day when an African American or woman would be president, if for nothing else than to break the 200 year old mould of the white male as power broker in America - to project an image to the world that we aren't doomed to be perpetually locked into the old racial and gendered hierarchy that has dominated our history. Now we get two viable candidates to do that in one year and many are torn over who to back. It's not that a candidate of another color or gender is automatically going to make it all good. No one will be able to do that all at once. And its not that a woman or African American are going to embody our political ideals - depends on what their's are. Feminists, or a certain portion of them have said a woman would bring different priorities to the office simply because she is a woman, but that argument hasn't been borne out by other women world leaders - Indira Ghandi and Margaret Thatcher, for instance. To win the top offices in their countries they chose to shape themselves in the cast of the male leaders before them, choosing to project an aura of strength and it interpreting that to be synonymous with a belligerent foreign policy. Hillary Clinton has quite obviously chosen their precedents for success in modeling her public image. This is not what we need to repair our standing in the world right now, nor to extricate us from a disastrous commitment to endless "war on terror." If elected, I believe she will be pushed into proving her "toughness" and actually be more likely to commit us to more military adventures before long. Barak Obama is not a well-known quantity as the alternative, but he has demonstrated a talent for mobilizing people in our polity who have previously politically disengaged. If have any hope for the future, a part of it will always rest on the fact the torch will need to be passed to the next generation someday. Despite the deep desire of boomers to extend their youth into the golden years, our time is passing. It's the right moment to pass that torch. Obama has built a coalition that reaches across race and gender and it holds the promise to expand if we cut it loose into the extended campaign of a general election. We need to support and nurture that promise and give it a chance. We have to make a choice between which "glass ceiling" of the white house gets busted this year, and given the choice between a woman who gives every indication that she will extend the dynamic of foreign policy machismo or an African American man that at leasts maintains the possibility of returning our foreign policy to one in which war will again be the last resort, I choose possibility that is promised by the latter. HIllary, stand down; there will be a woman in the white house some day - just not this woman and not this year.

Aside from the Xenophobes (which seem to congregate in these blogs), the country has moved on beyond race and gender. So the question McCain should be asking is "how do I run against an inspirational movement of hope?" Taking cues from Clinton, he could try to pursuade us that inspiration and hope are 'just words' or that Obama is not the true messenger for such lofty ideals. The problem is the country is really fedup of the same old politics. McCain would do better to offer some hope and inspiration himself than copy Clinton.

Obama's best response will be to lightheartedly mimic McCain in a high-pitched girly voice, "As even Hillary Clinton said..." If every time McCain dares to say it, he finds himself thus mocked, being nobody's fool, he will soon stop. The beauty of Barack's baritone, aside from the beauty of Barack's baritone, is it practically obliges him to quote McCain in high-pitched tones, which he graciously will not do except when he has to...

Dear Stumped,
If Barak is the nominee, then he can just claim that Hillary was wrong, that is why she lost. If Hillary wins, it will be in part because she is right. Pretty simple?
John McCain will be busy explaining why so many people in his own party hate him.

i think you are 100% right. the longer the democrat candidates in-fight, the easier it is to exploit their weaknesses. and personally i think that, weaknesses aside, obama is the candidate i would be most proud to call an american president. so it's sad to think of that being lost.
