Does McCain Have a Conflict of Interest?
Dear Stumped:
How will McCain handle the obvious conflict of interest of a presidency presiding over alcohol regulations and policy when his wife owns a $300 million beer distributorship?
Melissa Salvi
Fort Lee, N.J.
Dear Melissa:
Following in the footsteps of that other Vietnam veteran who ran for the presidency, John Kerry, John McCain married well indeed. His wife's stake in her family's business is estimated to be worth some $100 million, although those assets are held solely in her name, shielding the senator (at least as a technical matter, if not reality) from some conflicts.
Overall, beer doesn't strike me as an especially problematic business interest for a presidential candidate. It's not like we have a national beer policy, do we? If the family business were steel or sugar, I'd worry about the temptation to embrace protectionism to keep foreign imports at bay. If it somehow involved energy or healthcare, it could be squarely impacted by the outcome of ongoing federal policy debates.
That said, any business is, of course, affected by government policies and regulations. Is it a conflict of interest for McCain to push for lower corporate taxes that could benefit his wife's company? It seems a stretch (the same logic would imply that any call for lower
individual tax rates is a conflict), but there are surely people out there who try to make it an issue.
It's worth noting that the family business in question, a Phoenix-based distributorship called Hensley & Co., only sells Anheuser-Busch beers. So we'd all have to be vigilant lest a McCain administration engage in brand favoritism. Offering visiting heads of state nothing to drink but Bud or Bud Light would have to be a big no-no. Regulations barring reimbursement for federal employee travel involving facilities that don't pour Budweiser should also raise eyebrows. And please, we don't want to be bombarded with Budweiser ads while standing in line to go through airport security.
Then there is the whole Belgian issue, which, as I sit here pondering it on a languid Labor Day, I am beginning to realize is huge. Forget about McCain being the proverbial Manchurian candidate; he's actually the Belgian candidate!
Anheuser Busch, after all, is in the process of being taken over by Belgian giant InBev. My three-year-old son is already quite alarmed by this takeover, as he eagerly awaits word from Leuven on the fate of Williamsburg's Busch Gardens. But have those wily Belgians also potentially bought themselves a U.S. president with their $45 billion
acquisition? The McCain family fortune, after all, is contingent on the ongoing flow of Anheuser Busch brews.
I shudder at the prospect of undue Belgian (Flemish!) influence over U.S. foreign policy. Are the Walloons (the other Belgians) aware of this? How will this affect the tenuous balance of power maintained in the Low Countries since Westphalia? Will Heineken make common cause with the Russians to stop McCain?
I think McCain needs to come clean this week at the convention (and what beer is being served at the Xcel Center in St. Paul, by the way?) about the extent of his Belgian connections, and put these concerns to rest once and for all.
Dear Stumped:
Don't you get it? This is a time to celebrate for female Republican voters!!! This is our time, not a time to assume we want the female Democrats. Don't rain on our parade!!!
Mindy Rodriguez
Redondo Beach, CA
Dear Mindy,
Parade away, but I sincerely doubt that Sen. McCain would have chosen such an inexperienced running mate if he weren't trying to woo those 18 million Hillary Clinton voters. Your candidate does want some of those female Democrats (which is why Gov. Palin herself paid homage to Geraldine Ferraro and Hillary in her remarks last Friday), though it remains to be seen how many Clinton supporters will be so gender-obsessed as to embrace an anti-choice conservative Republican.
Palin's personal story is a compelling one - and getting more compelling by the day! - but only time will tell whether McCain's desperation to woo some of those Democratic women didn't result in a serious self-inflicted wound.

I sort of agree with a previous post. Gov. Palin scares me. All this is going to get to her head. She will become a Dick Cheney in heels, which I think is why the red team is soooo excited. Actually, she could end up making Cheney look like an altar boy.

"And as long as Palin has no relationships with known felons, I'd prefer her in the #2 seat over Obama in #1. Hey, we survived Dan Qwayle, right?"
Funny you should mention that, as it looks like she's going to end up a felon herself. What is it about Republicans and abuse-of-power? How many investigations does it take before people realize she's just as miserably corrupt as every other pol in Alaska?
Couple that with her religious fundamentalism and stated willingness to ignore the Constitution of the United States, and you've got quite a candidate. She makes Jack Abramoff look like a paragon of public virtue.

I see a conflict of interest in the McCain campaign.
The conflict is that McCain is selling himself as a moderate, willing to reach acrross the aisle and all that... and I guess he thinks that isn't playing so well with his party, and it won't get him elected - so he goes out and gets that fire breathing dragon the right longs for, in the form of Sarah Palin.
What I read into McCains selection of Palin is: Here's the aggresive, pro war fire breathing dragon you really want, I hope your happy, but you'll have to wait for my 4 years of reaching across aisles before you can have her. I think his plan is simply to ride HER hardcore Cheney-in- heels approach and image ...and simply ride on her coat tail to the White House.

I think McCain screwed himself out of getting any moderate Democrats or Independants. From what I've heard on TV and read on the net, no Democrat would vote for him just on the morallity issue alone. You have to meet certian moral standards to merit Democratic votes and the Republicans haven't met them.
Posted by: Lodie | September 2, 2008 5:16 PM
Thanks for the reminder that all those Clinton Democrats would have voted for McCain if only he hadn't insulted them by naming a woman governor as his VP choice. We will know when McCain loses that these sophisticated voters were not duped by such tactics.

I chalk it up to a partisan media who parrot anything said by their flavor of politician and a "televangelistic" editorial community who propagate the posturing under the guise of news coverage.
I can credit the Bush era for putting more Americans into houses yet I can still cite him for failure to be more vigilant for predatory lending. The same thing happened when the SEC in the Clinton era allowed monstrosities like Enron to emerge and dominate (that Enron, in particular, collapsed under its own weight on Bush's watch is only fitting).
Bubble capital investing is the problem with our economy. When investing, we all speculate that values will go up (until we short). Speculating wrong is a personal problem. Both Exec and Legislature can and should do more, together.
Sorry, off on a tangent!
Posted by: Executive Legislation | September 2, 2008 2:14 PM
"Last time I checked, it was the LEGISLATURE that passed the laws in this country."
So true. So why do we only read references to "Reagan tax cuts," "Bush(41) tax increases," "Clinton tax increases," "Bush(43) tax cuts," etc.?
Posted by: Lazarus | September 2, 2008 1:41 PM
Last time I checked, it was the LEGISLATURE that passed the laws in this country.
Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi and Ted Kennedy all the other DEM (and GOP) millionaires in the U.S. Congress (Senate in particular) will benefit just as nicely under inheriance tax scheme (or anything else presumed to benefit McCain, his wife or any other American).
If you favor checks and balances on your super-sized, obese, morally bereft, all-things-to-any-special-interest government, you'll vote McCain this time around, regardless of your affiliation.
If you don't want this insane government to have ANY checks and balances, then go ahead and vote Obama.
Either way, we end up with the best government you and I can pay (them) to project.
Posted by: Executive Legislation | September 2, 2008 1:27 PM
Conflict of interest? How about McCain's support of efforts to eliminate or drastically reduce inheritance taxes which would enable Cindy to pass along her lucky sperm, beer swilled $millions gains to their children (probably leaving out his children from his first marriage as she left out her half-sister).
A clear conflict of interest however it pales in comparison to the fact that McCain is a warmonger of the first order who gives every indication that he can't wait to start another war somewhere, anywhere, at anytime.
Posted by: Lazarus | September 2, 2008 1:14 PM
Since when did an old, white man (from the proverbial Old Boys Club) in the #2 position on the ticket ever woo anyone other than old white men? The only reasonable Obama agenda in selecting Biden ("experience anxiety", anyone?) was simply to woo middle age white men who are losing posture in their party.
McCain's pick, in and of itself, is more change than anything ANYTHING Obama has actually ever done. His actions have yet to match his flamboyant rhetoric.
I'll give up it to McCain simply for having the huevos to do what Obama should have: find a decidedly non-establishment running mate.
And as long as Palin has no relationships with known felons, I'd prefer her in the #2 seat over Obama in #1. Hey, we survived Dan Qwayle, right?

Give all voters freedom to drink and to die for their country!
Rather than just dropping the drinking age to 18, let's be more responsible. Better still, to lower it from 21 to the date of the first general election occuring after the voter's 18th birthday.
Buy them their first beer outside the polling place--make it a Bud, of course--then hand them their Selective Service card.
Posted by: LowertheDrinkingBoom | September 2, 2008 12:19 PM
wasn't it recently reported that college presidents were coming together in an attempt to reduce the drinking age from 21 to 18?
that group is overwhelmingly liberal and left-leaning in their perspective. not sure if they're not in collusion with the gop now. eh?

Is Obama in conflict with his book publisher that's made him a millionaire? Or is there anything nefarious about the tripling of his wife's salary upon becoming a senator?
Does Biden have a conflict over receiving subsidized Amtrak transportation, daily, for 27 years (that's a TON of discounted train fares)?
Does Palin have any conflict because she shoots bullets from guns (at moose) or rides snowmobiles, or because her husband works for Big Oil?
America, it seems, has become one giant conflict of interest--particularly as concerns intellectual honesty in the public interest.

I find it hard to understand alcohol policy and regulations a conflict of interest for a candidate for president. Our major college presidents insist our government lower the drinking age to 18. Remember that group can vote for president but can not drink legally. Here's a better conflict of interest. Mothers against Drunk Driving and academic leadership whom now are shepherds for their children. I'll take military leadership for our sons and daughters any day. They fight but can not drink whether 18 or 58.
Posted by: WRKing | September 2, 2008 10:37 AM
In order to avoid conflict if/when McCain is elected, I believe Congress should pass a bill to require Budweiser to change its color scheme from Red White and Blue.
Otherwise, anytime President McCain goes on camera with the American flag backdrop, he'll be attacked for promoting America's oldest and most recognizable beer brand (now owned by Belgians) to the benefit of his wife and the tens of thousands of other beer distributors in America that sell Bud products.
This is a scandal in waiting. Thank you for bringing this to the attention of the taxpaying, voting and beer-drinking American public.

of course Palin is no Hilary Clinton. She has the same length of experience which Obama has but in an executive position. People should have voted for Clinton for her experience and not for Obama who is a speechmaker and an incredible marketeer. If I want a car salesman, I get Obama.
And the media does not investigate Obama and goes easy on him even during the debates between him and Clinton.
voting for an inexperienced guy like Obama who already compiled strings of poor judgement and perhaps corruptions in his association with Rezko, William Ayers, Auchi and Reverend Wright is unacceptable.

Next surprise could be a commercial for the MasterRace card, offered by the AIP (Alaska Independent Party) through its former member, Sarah Palin.
Lying about opposing the Bridge to Nowhere…worth 1 mooseburger
Abuse of power as governor…worth 2 mooseburgers
Opposing birth control and trumpeting abstinence only….worth 1 pregnancy
Claiming international experience as head of the Alaska National Guard because Russia has not attacked Alaska….PRICELESS!

Obama is a hypocrite and maybe corrupt.
In his term as a senator, he never sanctioned his contributor, Rezko who sponsored his 3 campaigns with $250,000.
Rezko has at least 11 of his slum housing projects in Obama's constituency.
Rezko has sponsored Obama's purchase of his $1.65 million home.
Palin has as short a career as Obama but has not turned up such stink before. She is keeping her kid with Down's syndrome.
Obama can talk but has no substance

McCain's stance on marijuana prohibition is hypocritical at best. He wants to fight for freedom all around the globe (nation building), unless you prefer pot to beer. He wants to continue to throw medical marijuana patients in jail, but you can drink yourself to death and that's OK because his family is making a fortune. McCain has a financial stake in the prohibition of God's wondrous plant. Why should the taxpayer be required to pay to arrest, incarcerate, feed, clothe, & house people because they use marijuana? Because it is in his financial interest to bilk the taxpayers out of billions of dollars on an unconstitutional ban on God's plant. Now there's your conflict of interest!

Did you see Cindy try to raise money in that gold lame dress ($15,000), four foot strand of perfectly matched pearls, ($50,000), enormous diamond broach ($50,000) notwithstanding the shoes makes for a ten minute $100,000 bejeweled display. Much more money draped on her body that almost everyone makes in a year. If they just cashed in her bobbles they would have increase the contributions by over 10%. She even made Mrs. Bush seem old and frumpy. Wow, out-of-touch.
Posted by: tearlbrady | September 2, 2008 9:51 AM
I love unintended consequences. You say McCain's desperate effort was to woo Democratic women - maybe so, but, on the other hand, it certainly has energized this 58 yr old independent male who is sick and tired of insider politics and special interest corruption.
Any David (Davette) that can slay entrenched political crooks (in her own party) can certainly occupy a position on a ballot I will vote for.

Mrs. Palin wanted to secede from the United States in the 90s. Shouldn't we have someone patriotic enough who always wanted to be a citizen as our VP.
And shouldn't we have a President who demands it?
It surely isn't McCain and Palin.

Why should John McCain, if elected President, worry about conflict of interest when the issue of beverages in general and beer in particular come to his desk for a decision or resolution?
He simply could resort to a strict technicality, which is that it is his wife Cindy who is the beer distributor--and not he, John McCain.
He will even go further and say that no significant conjugal assets, whether real estate, bonds, stocks, insurance or what have you, is in his (McCain's) name.
(How about the watch on his wrist? That's in Cindy's name, too?)
And that, he will remind everyone, is why he doesn't know how many homes he owns! The seven homes he and Cindy actually own are all in Cindy's name!

OBAMA CHAMELEON’S TERROR KISS
-~America is great~-
-~We can change it~-
www.barackobama.comeleon
By selecting Joe Biden, Obama implicitly acknowledges that, in fact, the “Hopeful Barack Obama” (himself with his background Family - as Family always dwells in intimate limits of the Imago of every individual -) is singularly deprived of the complex, full capacity, and capability of leading the USA (and I would add, far more than Governor Palin who, at least, has an experience of governing, while Obama has only experiences of complacent rhetorics.)
And yet, the President is THE President of the USA, and the vice-president is only a vice-president…
(This prospective of Obama Presidency male dominance was amusingly highlighted by the macho kiss of Obama on Biden’s wife’s mouth, in front of a “surprised” Biden, and an “electrified” or mesmerized folkloric crowd. By the way, Biden did not even “think” of kissing Obama’s wife on her mouth : Hierarchy commands Hierarchy !)
More seriously, Obama, despite his undulating phraseology, has finally revealed himself totally ignorant of IDEOLOGY WAR.
Obama could send as many soldiers to be killed, and spend as many billions of dollars, in Afghanistan instead of Iraq (what an innovative revolution ! ) : that would not change one iota, on the long term, in the War against Islam Terrorism.
The real and only target on the long term is the Madrasas, Islamic Schools & Centres, etc. who teach tirelessly the murderous hatred of all non-Muslims : (Jews, Christians, Hindouists, Buddhists, Shintoists, Animists, Shamanists, Marxists, etc.)
A perfect example of this IDEOLOGY WAR is given, TODAY on an impressive scale, by the Genocide of Darfour :
And who rushed first to the aid of the President of Sudan (and his acolytes who masterminded this Genocide) ???
- An angry Assembly of Arab Ministers ! (although the Moslem Population of Sudan are not Arabs but Africans enslaved and converted by force to Islam in the 9th century…)
And, here again, Obama (by himself and with his background family) appears completely disarmed, glued and vulnerable in the interlocked Fundamentals of the Islam Terrorism Ideology.
At least, John Mc Cain offers an efficient guaranty of the valuable experience of collective discipline, which is one of the minimum conditions of waging war against any Terrorism.
Should, one predictable day, the Pakistani (or Iranian) atomic Weapon fall in the hands of Al-Qaida, Talibans, and other similar Syndicates, their automated brains, fully loaded with petrodollars but rather humiliated, thirsting for revenge, and wanting to set to Occident a spectacular and unforgettable example of MUHAMMADAN JIHAD , would not hesitate, one minute, to use the Atomic Weapon, to wipe off Israel, to set ablaze the Middle East Oil reserves (of the “civilized World”) and to strike the powerful USA…
And then, the 11-9 surprise of the twin towers of New-York would be nothing compared to the Hell Disaster to come.
On the necessary way of waging War efficiently, on the long term, against Islamic Terrorism, without endlessly sacrificing soldiers and wasting billions of Dollars : SEE : http://jerusalem-4thtemple-natan.blogspot.com
P.S. Quizz : (-the first who finds the right answer wins 1 US Dollar paid by Natan-) :
Why the running-Mate of Barack Obama is not Hillary Clinton ?

I feel insulted by McCain´s choice. It is as if we women would vote for anyone who has our same plumbing system (Gail Collins). When I say I don´t vote McCain because I do not like his party, his approach and his ideology, I mean it not because of his gender.
It is both wrong to stop voting for a woman (or another minority) JUST because of gender, as to do vote for a woman (or another minority) JUST because of gender. McCain seems to think we women think like that, well, I have news for you John McCain we vote for the best candidate and not the female candidate.
