Va. Governor Announces 2 Swine Flu Cases in State

UPDATED at 8:43 p.m. ET:

By Anita Kumar

Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine confirmed tonight that two state residents contracted swine flu while traveling in Mexico.

Kaine told reporters that the separate cases involved an adult woman from the central part of state and an adult male from the eastern portion of the state. Two sources close to Kaine said the cases involved a woman from Chesterfield, which is outside of Richmond, and a man from the state's northern neck.

Neither required hospitalization and both have recovered. Each had traveled to Mexico, both had mild illnesses and are recovering well, Kaine said. Neither are students, he added.

Kaine would not reveal more specifics about the addresses or ages or any other personal details about the patients.

He also said the state would only release information about confirmed cases, and would not discuss any probable cases, if there are any.

Kaine told reporters that it is "likely" there will be additional cases in Virginia.

The state has established an information line at (877) ASK-VDH3, or (877) 275-8343, for anyone with concerns or questions. The hotline, which will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., received 750 callers Thursday.

Unfortunately for President Obama, there just ain't no "Hidin Biden!"

I almost drove off the road laughing this morning when I heard Biden on the Today Show say he would advise his family not to use public transportation like the Subway or commercial airplanes. Then this afternoon I heard his office "clarify" his remarks by saying he was referring to "using public transportation to go to Mexico."

I was tempted to call the VP's office to inquire where I could catch the subway to Mexico?

Joe("5-deferment")is the reason every American should pray each night for Obama's good health! He will probably go down in history as the dumbest and most inept vice president of all times; by contrast he makes Palin look smart and Dan Quayle absolutely brilliant.

It appears President Obama has already assigned Biden the role of designated "butt of jokes" for the late night comedians -- a role for which he is eminently well qualified and ideally suited. The Obama challenge will be "Hidin Biden" for four years!

Press Release - Researchers Question Nature, Cause and Treatment of “Swine Flu” Outbreak

"Northern Neck" was capitalized in your initial story, but not in your latest. This is an error, and a highly misleading one. Virginia's "Northern Neck" is actually south and east of the area usually referred to as "Northern Virginia."

If we did not have all these alliens in this country US would not have the problem. This problem will not end until we close the broder.

nativeva1: Which "alliens" do you mean? Illegal ones? The infected people had each traveled to Mexico (presumably, from the US) and returned. We don't even if know if they were Mexican. Non-Mexicans also go there, you know. Or do you mean all aliens? If you know anything about American history, you know that almost all of us are aliens, or children, grandchildren, etc. of aliens. So when should the border have been closed? After the Pilgrims arrived?

Do you realize that the Canadians, for instance could speak the same way about Americans? ("This problem will not end until we close the border") After all, Canada IS cleaner, and many Americans have illegally crossed the border there to avoid all types of situations. How would you feel if they were talking about sealing the border with us? A little discriminated against, perhaps? In many ways they would have more to complain about regarding their immediate Southern neighbors, but unlike many ignorant Americans who espouse beliefs such as yours, they tend to be warm and welcoming despite all the reasons they might have to be less so. Personally, I feel enriched for having made friends with immigrants of many countries in my area- Italian, Spanish, French, Canadian, Australian, and yes, Mexican. These current borders are imaginary lines drawn by people who are no longer living for reasons that no longer apply to us. From one Native Virginan to another.... it is a new millenium, and has been for almost ten years. Time to update your outdated outlook.

"So when should the border have been closed? After the Pilgrims arrived?"

Native Americans might argue for 1606.

How fitting that a swine who really looks like a pig should be announcing this. I am really hoping that Kaine gets the Wet Back flu.

It took the enegry secretary Steven Chu, who went to mexico two weeks ago, up until now to start exhibiting the flu after traveling there on April 16th.

Therefore, this swine pig flu thing has about a two week incubation period. Before feeling too relieved that this is not that serious, give it a couple of weeks to see how many people become sick from this thing. In the mean time, use good precautions around other people. [All schools should be closed!]

Take an aged garlic pill [Kyolic is good], since garlic is the most potent anti-viral remedy (as well as anti-bacterial, anti-fungal). Aged garlic is just a food suplement, but it is one of the most healthful food suplements that has a lot of great benefits [check it out on the internet.] Kyolic comes in a capsule and does not stink the breath.

Good luck!

native1a:
I could reiterate the comments above, but I will just say this: why don't you read a little bit before passing judgment on this event? The two people who are the first Virginia cases were visiting Mexico are residents of the US, and one should presume either natural born citizens of the US, naturalized citizens (do you have some problem with that?), or legal residents. People do visit foreign countries, you know. Well maybe not you. Most of the early cases in the US were high school students from New York City who visited Mexico recently.

So what?

The problem with people like you is that you think your little rants add something to the discussion of issues that these threads are supposed to enable. If you don't have something less idiotic to say than the comment above, you should stop.
Yeah, you're free to say what you want. But it doesn't make it any smarter or any better informed.

FYI

Chugai, the pharmaceutical manufacturer of Tamiflu, and half owned by Switzerland's Roche Holding AG, reported in their 2008 annual report to shareholders that they expected a 531% increase in sales due to the expected resumption of government stockpiling in FY2009.
Many millions of packets of Tamiflu will be expiring in 2009/2010.

The other thought that comes to mind :
They are leaving the border WIDE OPEN
1. The flu story is a faux flu
2. They want us sick/dead
3. Someone can make a lot of money with this...

take your pick

This is indeed going to be a big money maker for vaccine companies and a big increase in funding for the CDC.

then the other thought...

A disease named after our
Non-representatives

Concentration camps for living creatures is never a good thing. This case is another proof.

It is time to leave out the meat and other animal products. Check out websites like http://www.MeatAlternatives.org and see how many options (healthier ones) we humans have.

Right now, we are slaughtering our only plant. Let's wake up before it will be too late.

It's an aide/staff member to Energy Secretary Chu who's exhibiting flu symptoms, not the Chu himself.

Seriously people?

Biden said "He would advise HIS FAMILY not to use public transportation like the Subway or commercial airplanes."

Do what you feel is right for your own family. If you don't agree with Biden's opinion, then that's ok! You have the power to make your own choice regarding your family's health & safety during all of this.
