2-0 and $100,000 Richer?
NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- Overcast day here so far. Picked up The Tennessean outside my hotel room door this morning, and read reporter Adam Sparks laying out how Middle Tennessee State could perhaps pull off the upset tonight against Maryland. Sparks also explains that this game is the second game in a two-for-one contract. Maryland hosted MTSU in 2006 and will host the Blue Raiders in 2009.
MTSU received $500,000 to play Maryland in 2006, a 24-10 Maryland victory. MTSU pays Maryland $100,000 for tonight’s game, and Maryland returns $100,000 to MTSU in 2009 for that game, the newspaper says. Maryland's hope in the series, obviously, is to get a total of three wins before it enters a more difficult ACC schedule in each of the seasons. What do you think of the money figures? Worth three wins?
Tonight’s game marks the third straight season MTSU is hosting a team from a BCS conference. MTSU lost to Louisville, 44-17, in 2006 in a designated home game. The Blue Raiders also lost to Virginia, 23-21. Mississippi State and Georgia Tech will make the trek to Murfreesboro in 2006 and 2009, respectively, and Vanderbilt is slated to visit in 2015 and 2017. Vanderbilt is the only BCS school that MTSU has beaten, but all three wins came in Nashville.
A little bit later, I will have a prediction, a suggestion for the ACC and updates throughout the game once I drive back down to Murfreesboro. But it’s time to grab some breakfast.
