Best Bet for Steffy Return: Wake Forest
Ralph Friedgen said Jordan Steffy will be out at least 3-4 weeks with the fractured thumb on his throwing hand, so let's look ahead:
Four weeks would give Steffy an outside chance to return for the Virginia game in Charlottesville on Oct. 4. But why bring Steffy back for that game, when you get a bye week, another week to rest and recover, right after that?
The best timetable to bring Steffy back in the mix seems to be for the Oct. 18 game at Wake Forest. But here is the question: If Steffy is 100 percent by mid-October, should he get his starting job back? Should it be based on how he does in practice, again?
What record, or performance, would Chris Turner need over the next five games to put him in position to retain the starting job? And can Steffy lose the starting job because of injury for the second year in a row?? Talk about unlucky fortune!

I totally agree with Anthony...plus we should be seeing a healthy dose of Josh Portis by then. Jordan Steffy just doesn't bring enough positive plays to the football field to justify getting his job back. Great kid, I'm sure...just not a great football player.

The Wake game is at Byrd.
Turner will have to perform poorly to bring Steffy back for the Wake game. If you recall the Wake game was a huge collapse started by Steffy's pick-6.

I hate to say it, but yes, he can lose his job to injury two years in a row. At this point Chris Turner is the starting QB for the Terps, and should be until his performance dictates otherwise, or he is physically unable to play effectively. I wanted Steffy to play well once he was named starter, but it was questionable whether he would have started against MTSU even without the injury. He did not separate himself far enough from the other QBs to be the unquestioned starter when he returns.
For all those wanting Turner initially, Turner had a good game against Rutgers leading to a comeback win, and against BC, two highly ranked teams at the time. But he was also the QB for the losses to Virginia and UNC, not exactly the finest hours of Maryland football. He has shown himself to be a competent D1 QB, but not exceptional. This is his chance to change that with his play the next 3-4 weeks. If he does the job, it should be his to keep as long as he is healthy.

Hopefully Ralph won't be throwing a welcome back Jordan parade before the Wake game. Turner will have ample time to prove himself by then. If by chance he isn't cutting it, then Portis should start.

Steffy should not get the job back no matter how Turner plays. If Turner somehow bombs then Portis should take over. If Steffy is ready halfway through the season then what is the point of putting him back in? He will not improve and his eligiblity will thankfully be almost over. I would rather get Turner or Portis the experience and hopefully have them improve because we will need them next year too.

5-1 or 6-0 means Turner is playing too good to put him back in. Turner has won the job.
Terps should be 4-2 at the Wake game. If they are 4-2 you can't put him back in and risk upsetting team chemistry and falling out of the bowl picture. Gotta hold serve at home.
If they are 3-3 (don't even want to consider a worse record) the season is already headed to the toilet in which case we better be seeing a healthy dose of Josh Portis to build for next year.
I really DON'T see any scenario where it makes sense to put him back in outside of injuries or Turner playing extremely poorly and the team being 4-2 winning in spite of his play...

Turner, Turner, Turner, Turner! We cannot wait to see you in action on Saturday(s). GO TERPS!

Is Ken Mastrole still available?

I agree with Lee. If , somehow, the season is going downhill by mid October, Portis should be the first option instead of Steffy.

Why do we keep dwelling on Jordan Steffy?
Really?! What the hell has he done for University of Maryland's football program as a starting QB. Nothing! He maybe a great kid and all that ... But, it doesn't translate into a "Win" on the football field.
Chris Turner has played decent ball, and even in the losses we had with him as a QB, we were in the game and competitive.
Fact of the matter is that we need to open up our offense and make it high octance - if we expect to win big games against ranked opponents. If we are able to consistently score 30 points/game, and our defense does its job ... we could have a monsterous year.
By the way, do we have any freshmen QB's worth considering to be pushed into the mix?
Jordan - a word of advise... please just focus on your graduate studies, and other charitable work.

Umm, this isn't the NFL where we play for draft position. If Turner is playing well he keeps it. If he's not Jordan gets it back. Portis isn't ready yet. I don't get the "hate Steffy at any cost" crew.

"I don't get the "hate Steffy at any cost" crew."
Based on Steffy's career thus far, most Terp fans have determined that Steffy does not have what it takes to be a decent QB at the division 1 level. He has two career td passes, panics under any defensive pressure and makes poor decision such as sliding into the ground rather than running for a open first down that would have clinched the WF game last year. Most Maryland fans don't hate Steffy but are frustrated that he was picked to start over Turner, who performed far better than him last year and there is the preception that Ralph favors Steffy.

The Terps should beat Middle Tenn, Eastern Michigan and UVA. If Turner can pull out a win against either Clemson or Cal to lead the team to 5-1, there is no reason Steffy should get the starting position back when healthy. He's NEVER proved anything, only that he supposively good in practice and horrible in games.
