Bobby Bowden on Point Spreads

I caught Bobby Bowden’s interview before I jumped in on his son’s interview, and let me tell you, Bowden is sheer entertainment each week. I have always thought that the Florida State football team would be one of the best football beats in the country. Never a dull moment and the coach could say just about anything. Case in point: A Seattle columnist today asked Bobby Bowden is he ever pays attention to the point spreads of his games.

Bowden said he does, and that he looks at the spread in the newspaper and “kind of enjoys looking at it.” Bowden made clear to point out, “I don’t bet.” When asked whether he ever hears from alumni after games regarding the point spread, Bowden offered a hearty laugh and said, “I’m sure we hear from some nuts who” bet on the games and they say, “Why didn’t you go for two? Why didn’t you do this?”

Many coaches this week are talking spread offenses. Bowden is asked about point spreads. Gotta love it.

On a related note, I was surprised to hear the spread for the Clemson-Maryland game was something like 11 points. Who thinks that is a bit too much respect for the Tigers? I see this game being close, but I’ll have a prediction later in the week.

Clemson -- 48
Maryland -- 17

Maryland will finish with a 4-8 record (good for last place in the ACC - even behind Duke).

I am happy that Maryland is no longer recruiting Tavon Austin.

Jelani Jenkins, Travis Hawkins and Isaac Holmes will be signing with the University of Florida.

Go Tar Heels !

On the one hand, I kind of see where the oddsmakers are coming from. We have played one road game this year, and we lost it to Middle Tennessee State. Death Valley will be a more challenging environment and matchup than MTSU could provide. Our pass defense is suspect. Our kicker has looked shaky. Seems like you can add all those up to get 11 points.

On the other hand, I have a tough time seeing us getting blown out, if we lose. I think we'll win or lose by some score like 28-24. Just a hunch.
