Boo Who?
NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- Check this comment out from reader Dan about fans booing Jordan Steffy: “We always stick around after the games to let traffic clear out. Most of the players come out of the stadium at the gate there by the top of the endzone, with their families. We saw Steffy come out that day. Alone. And was greeted in the parking deck by (I assume) a family member with a huge hug. The kid looked just beyond down. It's easy for people to boo some faceless helmet and a number...but I wish those folks who booed him could have seen that side of the coin...seen him after the game, away from the public facade and the cameras. No, I didn't boo. I really hoped that he would get his game straight this year...and still hope he gets a chance.”
I have read many comments and received a bunch of e-mails from readers saying that the booing was directed at Ralph and the vanilla and ineffective offense rather than QB Jordan Steffy. Here is my point: From the press box, I still heard the “We want Turner!” chant and the boos. Even if the boos were directed at Friedgen, how would Steffy know the difference? He wouldn’t. So the team’s starting quarterback is playing and hearing boos every time he releases a pass. What I can’t seem to grasp is how Maryland fans booing the offense could help the quarterback if there is even a chance he might think it is directed at him. If it doesn’t break his spirit, wouldn’t it be an unnecessary distraction in his home stadium, at the least? Aren’t home game meant to give the home team’s players an advantage, not a disadvantage? Am I missing something?

The "we want Turner" cheers seemed to start in the student section.
I wonder what the Diamondback's take has been on the QB situation, and how the average student feels about Turner v. Steffy? Might be an interesting insight into some of the booing of Steffy or Turner love.

You boo after games, not during them. See the first mens basketball final four run sparked by the team being sent to the locker room to boos after an inexcusable loss to FSU and the Giants fans who gave Manning the Steffy treatment to the tune of 3-5 at home last year and 11-1 on the road and a Super Bowl championship.

I think it was just desperation time for the fans. This is a pretty unique situation, where basically 99% of the fanbase feels that the head coach made the wrong decision at QB. When our fears were realized Saturday(Steffy played the same way he always has in games), the fans tried to let the coach know how they feel. I'm not saying it's right, but it was almost a form of protesting against Friedgen. It's just a shame Steffy has to deal with this.

Ralph should never have put the kid in the situation. Steffy is clearly not capable of playing at this level. Putting him on the field as the starting QB is a joke and insulting to the fans. If Ralph can't do better than that then he should resign.

I'm all for 'give the guy a break', no question. Jordan hasn't exactly been fairly treated by Ralph either. Jordan has been put in a situation where he had to perform above what he is capable of doing. And, I don't hear fans saying "What about Chris Turner's feelings? He's sad because he didn't get the starter position."
Ralph CODDLES his favorites, and one player's feelings can't be put above the team's. I know Steffy is a great kid. I expect ALL of them to be great kids. But, the next great kid may be sitting down on the depth chart.
If you want to be a big-time football program, you have to perform. A 14-7 win over Delaware is unacceptable. Career totals of 2 TDs, 7 INTs, 31 sacks, 933 yards in 15 career games (6 starts) - against not top-notch competition, mind you - are UNACCEPTABLE.
Steffy should never have been in this position this year. Ralph just set him up. Ralph needs to get his head checked. His vanilla offense, coupled with Cosh's vanilla defense, is a recipe for disaster.

Final Score this coming Saturday:
Middle Tennessee State -- 37
Maryland -- 17
Maryland will finish the season with a 4-8 record (good for last place in the ACC - even behind Duke)
I am glad that Maryland is no longer recruiting Tavon Austin
Jelani Jenkins will not be attending Maryland - he will sign with the University of Florida.

Yeah, you are missing something. Fridge's decision making in this situation is just beyond comprehension, and everyone knew he made the wrong choice by going with Steffy despite Turner's successes as a sophomore. He was poised for big things this year and perhaps a bigger and better senior year. So when Steffy goes out there and the passing game is horrible against a lowly opponent, booing was an appropriate reaction by the fans. If he wants to think we hate Jordan Steffy as a person, that is just redirecting the message the fans are trying to send to him. We don't have an open line of communication with him like the press, and after Steffy played exactly as we expected, that was the only way to vent our frustrations.
This whole storyline is missing the more important point: forget the so-called bias against Steffy - what does Fridge have against Turner? He's got a chance to develop a strong QB and three-year starter and he basicaly takes every chance he can to dump on the guy. And we're supposed to feel bad because Steffy, who isn't playing well, is conversely getting dumped on by the fans???

Many MD fans complain about everything. They complain about a basketball coach that took them from probation to a national title while playing clean. They complain about a head football coach who after 3 9+ win seasons could have walked to any job he wanted, but stayed at this alma mater. Gary has said it's a product of being in a big media market where its acceptable to criticize pro athletes, and it then extends to college players. Ironically, it's MD fans who boo at their players that are hurting MD, not the coaches.

Come on people--It is a football game that people pay to attend and these are adults playing the game in front of large crowds that is all part of the allure for them to sign up at a big university. If fans want to boo then so be it. For those of you who are so above booing at football or basketball games then i expect you give only polite tennis applause when something pleasing to you occurs during the game. Does booing help the kid play better at QB? Of course not but neither will cheering him on if his talent level is division 2. If fans want to cheer for another player to play--so what--let them do it--if the team was playing well then this would all be moot. You cant be a big time college football player or coach and only expect to get the cheers when things are going well--you have to expect the boos when things are not going well. It all comes with the territory.

If the school wants to charge pro prices in a pro-size stadium, and treat these players like pros, and market them like pros, and adjust the schedule on relative short notice for TV's benefit as if it were pro, then don't be surprised that people boo.
I have not a doubt in my mind that some comments were way out of bounds. But if I"m paying more than 40 bucks for each seat, paying $15 to park unless you join the Terp Club, then they only charge you $10 after taking your $50 strongarmed donation, don't get all indignant about how I express myself.
(and if it matters, I couldn't go to the first game, but I understand the sentiments being shared on both sides)

If the coaching staff was organized and prepared in advance and did not lead by emotion, no one would wonder every game who the QB is. Its getting really old. The booing was wrong, and Chris Turner again showed Maryland class by telling everyone it was wrong and to stop booing Steffy.
Turner was not impressed with the booing towards his roommate and friend. And Im not impressed with Ralph, It is obvious he has something against Turner.
Bored of Fridges games and they are getting expensive to watch

No, you are not missing something. The booing was inexcusable and unjustified, even if aimed at Ralph and not Steffy. C'mon people, it's college football. Give the guy a break.
