Great Franklin Quote on Portis
Offensive coordinator James Franklin is always very high-energy and very candid, even in defeat. He can be blunt, and he also has a way of explaining complicated things in a clear fashion, which some coaches cannot always do. While Josh Portis has tremendous potential, I think Franklin really summed up a lot of the fans' feelings about Portis with this quote:
“When Portis goes on the field, there are two guys that are very nervous: Me and the defensive coordinator. Every single time.”
Franklin also talked about his philosophy that he has tried to explain in depth to starter Chris Turner.
“They are going to have to cover the entire field. They are going to have to stop the run, stop the pass. And really depending upon what you are doing, you have different types of throws. You have the vertical passing game, you have horizontal stretch, you have high-lows. A lot of times it’s going to be horizontal stretch.
“They can’t cover them all! That’s what I keep trying to say. If you just drop back, go through your progressions, there are very rarely where your first, second and third reads are covered. Very rarely happens. That’s all you have to do at the quarterback position, make one of those three. Keep the chains moving.
“There are still some plays haunting me. There is still so much room for improvement. The first quarter was good. We played below average the rest of the game.”
Q: What do you make of the fact that the team plays to the level of its competition?
“We let one slip away. We should be 3-0. But there are people, looking at the schedule ahead of time, maybe they say, win, win, loss. I didn’t look at it that way. We let one go, we ended up winning one today that maybe we weren’t supposed to win. We are back to where we should be. Eastern Michigan is critical that we show some mature and know how to win when we are supposed to. Build more confidence and come out and be ready.”
