More on Barnes

I didn’t have room for everything on Kevin Barnes in my story. Ralph Friedgen talked a little more about the progress Barnes has made since he has been here. Remember, Barnes came into Maryland around 155 pounds. Now he is about 188. (And he still looks thin.) But he can hit. Here’s Ralph:

“It was a good hit. And Kevin has been playing extremely well. What was refreshing is that tackling has not been Kevin’s strong point. It was an area that hurt us last year. He has really made a conscious effort to get better at it. The thing I liked about it – Kevin goes in a lot of times with his head down, and that’s very dangerous. The hit he made, he had his head up and was in good hitting position.

“Of all our DBs, he is playing with the most confidence. The interference call he had, I think it probably was interference but he was making an adjustment to go to the ball, and legs kind of got tangled up. Kevin has come a long way. I tell some of our younger defensive backs. He was very timid about getting beat and he played very soft at times. He has really changed that and is having a really good year. He is doing great with leadership, too, and I am proud the way he has matured.”
