Ralph's Concern about using Portis

So for the foreseeable future, Josh Portis will be No. 2 at quarterback. But coaches still said he will definitely see action under center Saturday. That makes the situation interesting because Ralph Friedgen said he has had some concern about playing his backup too much. He doesn’t want to risk injury to Portis because, if something happened to Chris Turner, Fridge could really be in some trouble.

“The one thing [Steffy’s injury] changes is he is getting more reps in practice now," Friedgen said. "He has a chance to develop and grow. It could be a blessing. It depends on Josh approaches it. He ought to see this as an opportunity to get better. Hopefully he was.

“It crossed my mind [about playing him too much as backup]. If we lose him it could put us in a bind. But right now we have to play every game to win. But that has been a concern of mine.”

Question: How much action should Portis see Saturday?

Enough to run more than just one play out of the playbook. If Ralph is concerned about what would happen if Turner got hurt, he should be. Portis needs to play enough to show Ralph that he can be trusted to run more than the same play over and over.

I'm tired of hearing how Ralph doesn't want to use someone cuz they could get hurt. DUH! 22 guys on the field at once could get hurt.

You play to win the friggin' game. Give yourself the best chance to win. Injuries are always a risk. Turner could get hurt and then the next play Portis gets hurt. S happens.

Ralph, stop letting your own mind get in the way of winning games!!

If you are going to use him use him right. Let him showcase his abilities without the 6th grade play calling.

What happened to the innovative and daring coach we had when Ralph came aboard? How can you be afraid to use a player of his ability? This is utterly ridiculous.

I don't see why 60/40 or 70/30 is out of the question. Do like Tennessee did a year or two back. Or the way Leak/Tebow were Tebows freshman year. I think Florida had some success (undefeated season)with that.

Ralph has been playing not to lose for the last 4 years. He needs to get back to playing to win.
