Turner to Start; MTSU Ready for Him

Just got into the office. To review the news of the day: Chris Turner will start at quarterback for Maryland this Saturday at Middle Tennessee State, and opening game starter Jordan Steffy will be out a minimum of three weeks after yesterday's X-rays revealed that the ligament in the thumb of his throwing hand was torn away from the bone.

When a reporter asked Friedgen how Turner played in practice all week, Friedgen gave a one-word answer: "Okay."

Here is what I find interesting. Fellow Post reporter Steve Yanda talked to MTSU Coach Steve Stocktill at 11:27 this morning, some six minutes before Ralph made the announcement on the ACC teleconference. Yet Stockstill sounded like he knew Turner was starting because, well he said so:

"Here is what I think, Turner is going to start, and they are going to bring in [Josh] Portis to run the ball. That is what we are planning on. As for how much they are going to play Steffy, I don't know.. They will run their regular offense with Turner. You don't have enough time to prepare for all three quarterbacks; you can't do that. I don't think an offense can have three different plans for three different quarterbacks."

Here is my question to everyone: Now that Turner is in, will he ever give up the starting role the rest of the season?

Turner will give up the starting job when Portis finally fingures out how to read a defense and show the potential that made him higher on the depth chart at one time than Tim Tebow at Florida.

I think he has it for the season. I believe he is the best option for the team and it is clearly evident that Portis does not have a good enough grip on the offense.

With Turner and Portis, we still have them both for another year as well. Steffy has shown nothing in games to justify keeping the position.

As much as I love Portis, he was never higher on the depth chart than Tim Tebow at Florida...Portis transfered because Tim Tebow committed to attend Florida. They weren't there at the same time.

It does not matter who starts, Maryland is a weak football team. When the Twerps take on the Hokies, I do not expect a much different outcome than the last time you visited Lane Stadium. Maybe Turner will be the difference between winning 4 or 5 games and slipping into the "Who Cares Bowl" at 6-6 but so what?

BenColemanhasabigego,
Not sure that after you lose to ECU and your own coach who stubbornly stuck with 'his guy' at QB was forced to recant and unredshirt a guy that played better than the guy he named started last year is the time to start tossing the old stones around. Some might say you reside in a glass house. An 0-1 glass house at that.

That said FREE Josh Portis. Bigger upside. Who wants to win 8 games? I would rather go all in and try to win 10... Dudes never gonna learn the office sitting at 3 on the depth chart, taking no reps in practice, and only coming in to run the ball. It's like taking a point guard and saying "here go run the princeton offense with the second string while our guys are running the flex."

First of all, props to Prisbell and company for cranking out the posts. I think this will fill a demand for MD fans that has been sorely lacking in the area media outlets.
I am totally in favor of Turner being the starter and have advocated for him on this blog. However, he is not a savior and is not yet to the level of a Shawn Hill or Scott McBrien. He is definately better than Steffy and i think that has been the whole point. The way Ralph has bungled the Qb situation I do not think anyone can say with any confidence that there wont be a change again this year. Turner will have his bad games but hopefully Ralph will cut him some slack and let him get better.

There's no chance Turner retains the starting role for the rest of the season, because his coach has seemingly completely lost his grip on reality. One too many 'okay' weeks of practice, and he'll be yanked. I no longer have any faith in Ralph Friedgen or his ability to objectively manage a football team.

Lee,

The last time I checked, ECU is not an ACC team so VT's ACC chances were not impacted by that defeat. Luckily for the Hokies, we are likely to win the ACC yet again in a rebuilding year. I am certain we could defeat Maryland with Frank Beamer's daughter playing QB. We would have joined the league earlier if we had known the ACC was such a cakewalk.

This is with a top ten in the nation running back duo. I just don't see him as the savior. He's a 9 win QB if he's lights out. FREE Josh Portis

BenColemanhasabigego,
So what you are saying is that you are 0-1. That your expectations have been lowered by that one loss. and that you also have a problem at QB. Same problem MD has in fact, except that you are 0-1. You know, 0 wins, 1 loss. Just so we are on the same page...

Turner will QB the rest of the season, I wouldn't be surprised to see Steffy leave the team all together, hang up his cleats and concentrate on grad school

Posted by: Mike in MN | September 3, 2008 2:29 PM | Report abuse

Steffy will never quit the team. If Chris has a couple of bad games you could see Jordan come back toward the end of the year but that depends on how far he falls behind because of the repair and rehab. Chris could also be replaced by josh but I believe the more likely situation would be to see more time on the field for Josh and less for Chris.

Why do VA Tech fans come on to UMD message boards and talk trash after a devastating loss. For some reason I have seen them on here more frequently like they consider us a threat or rival. UMD does not care about VA Tech, and I consider WVU a bigger rival.

Posted by: Wes | September 3, 2008 2:53 PM | Report abuse

get your own blog. wait...they don't have computers in blacksburg yet. by the way, your team sucks this year. beat it.

Posted by: V | September 3, 2008 3:09 PM | Report abuse

Coleman just proves again what a dump of an academic school Vagina Tech is. They lose to ECU - and then talk trash. Moronic.

Posted by: SeanTaylor21 | September 3, 2008 3:19 PM | Report abuse

If MD can get any kind of play from their QB's this year they will win the ACC.

The ACC is weak this year. MD has the most talent at the skill positions by far they just need consistency from QB. Hopefully Turner or Portis can give us that and hopefully Steffy is out the entire year.

BenColemanisBig.....HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA

are you serious? You are talking trash and you just lost to ECU. You will be better noW that tyrod taylor is coming back but still you don't talk trash after losing to ECU. Also ur saying Beamer's daughter could play for us...compared to Glennon she is probably an all-american. Ralph Friedgen at 400 lbs is better than Glennon.

The Fridge and Franklin proved their questionable eye for talent by starting Steffy again. Whoever plays best in games should start. Hopefully that player is solid in practice too. If not, play the gamer. Franklin recruited Steffy and has done a great job of it since he returned. Shameful that pride and or blind loyalty seems to have decided who started vs. UDel. Maybe the fans were booing Fridge and the staff for their poor discernment? Play turner, who can read a defense and throws a sweet deep ball, especially on play action and run the I formation with Portis running the triple option to win. Hope he can throw the freeze option pass. Or, put Josh at flanker, TB, , kick returner and or wedgebuster just to get him on the field if he's not ready to QB yet...

Turner starts as long as the Terps win.

Lets see how he does not just saturday, but against Cal at home and Clemson in Death Valley.

GO TERPS!!!

It was painful to watch the Delaware game. The only pass Steffy threw downfield was on a broken play. Granted the running games was great, but we might actually score a few more points with a complimentary passing game. Go Turner!

i am a die hart terp fan and have been for years however this is the first time a am asking rgo fridgen to step down.He has allowed his personal feelings about chris turner take prority over what is best for our football team

Sorry steffy you are a nice guy but you are not a div 1 player and embarrasing out of shape fridgen feels sorry for you.

This game is about business and fridgen either changes his attitude or he must go

Debbie we look to you as our commander and chief to straighen fridgen out before its to late

Thank you

Yo Ralphie! Please call Taffie and get the offense back into gear.

While you are at it, let me know if you need a QB. The one that you stand behind should actually be standing behind you and hold the clip board for a long long time.

Doesn't Maryland have a freshmen QB that can rise up to the challenge?

What happens if Turner gets hurt too? Is Jamarr Robinson still with the team? Nobody talks about him.

Posted by: Mike F | September 3, 2008 6:57 PM | Report abuse

Ralph is in the tank for Steffy...once kid is healthy again he will find ANY excuse to yank Turner. He is biased. Simple as that. Tell you what...he said so yesterday at his presser when he said that he "guarantees that Steffy will come back this year and win a game". Gee Ralph, does it matter how the other QB kid is playing. Like lots of fans, sick and tired of Ralph's act...wish he would quit. Don't think enough oxygen is getting to his brain through his clogged arteries.

As a season ticket holder I was disappointed at Sat's game. On Sun I asked "Why?"
Secondafry was my concern but they appeared athletic and fast with 2 picks. Pleasent surprise. Linebackers were good. D-line got pushed around but overall the D gave up 7 pts. A good effort. The O-line and runing backs put up over 200yds rushing, very good. But someone has to grt the ball to the receivers.Heyward-Bey, Williams(both of them), Oquendo, andGronkowski. Jordan does not appear to be the guy. Try Chris. Get Portis on the field somewhere he is too much athlete to get four touches.

I thought that the CHokies waited until the end of the season to perform their famous choking maneuver? Why start so soon this year? Too bad the ACC was held hostage by the former governer of VA and was forced to let a safety school like Va Tech into the conference.

If the fat genius guarantees that Stiffy will come in and win a game for us this year, than I have faith. But no, Turner shouldn't give up the starting spot from now until 2010--when he'll be playing on sundays...

Posted by: Rudes | September 3, 2008 8:19 PM | Report abuse

Ralph's judgement and handling of QBs is highly suspect right now. Consider the number of QBs that have transfered out of the program...pretty sure it cannot be counted on one hand.

Posted by: ML in DC | September 3, 2008 8:29 PM | Report abuse

So what if Steffy had led us on four scoring drives in five possessions and had us up 16-0 at the half? Wait - "he" missed 3 field goals didn't he, that dummy! How come so many people are so much smarter than the coaches. I'm sorry I doubted he was hurt - though he could have screwed us by not letting the coaches know right away. (Ok, I still think he's an idiot but ease up folks).

Posted by: UMT | September 3, 2008 8:40 PM | Report abuse

coaches make mistakes...Ralph's mistakes include Statham, not once, but TWICE. How many QBs have transfered out of the program? Getting rid of Taffe and Blackney...hiring Cosh. Numerous game day blunders. Acting as a poor OC. Should I go on? At $2M...coaches cannot put personal agendas above the program. The entire episode is indicative of the downtrend.
