Where Would a Loss Rank?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- Maryland has lost to one non-BCS team in Friedgen’s eight seasons, and that was to open 2003 in Dekalb, Ill. Remember, that Maryland team had won 21 total games in the two previous seasons combined, so expectations were a bit higher. The 20-13 overtime loss was surprising even though Northern Illinois had a pretty good squad led by Michael “The Burner” Turner. In fact, NIU finished 10-2 that season, so as it turned out, the loss wound up being not as bad as it looked at the time. (Thanks to FredTerp for sending the link for yearly win-loss totals.)

From what I have heard about that game --- I arrived at The Post two months later --- the media from Northern Illinois did a pretty good job celebrating that victory in the press box that night. Even with that defeat, the 2003 Terrapins team still won 10 games and pounded West Virginia in the Gator Bowl.

Expectations are not quite as high for this year’s Maryland team, and I would contend that MTSU is not as strong as Northern Illinois was. Would a loss Saturday be the worst loss of the Friedgen era?

Northern Illinois was 10-2 that year (6-2 in the MAC)

They lost to Bowling Green and Toledo.

i think NIU even ended up being ranked in the final AP poll and certainly was at some point during the year (although cause/effect is certainly an issue with that fact)

Final Score this coming Saturday:

Middle Tennessee State -- 37
Maryland -- 17

Maryland will finish the season with a 4-8 record (good for last place in the ACC - even behind Duke)

I am glad that Maryland is no longer recruiting Tavon Austin

Jelani Jenkins will not be attending Maryland - he will sign with the University of Florida.

Gary's a troll with too much time on his hands since "The Union Gap" broke up...and he's still bitter about it.

there's no doubt that a loss to MT would be a painful shock to the system...
