Who wants more Portis?
Two players looked good in the first half, for the most part: Josh Portis and Da'Rel Scott.
Who thinks Portis is best option for the Terps?
By the way, a MTSU reporter told me Maryland's defense looked like a middle-of-the-pack Sun Belt defense.

It's time to bring in Portis - to stay. He gives the Terps a true dual threat behind center.
***
In the second half, I want to see our O-line grind it out. This will make room for Portis and Scott to run!

Come on coach, open up the playbook. Being conservative isn't working tonight!

wow, can't do anything right. getting pwnd by division 2 teams. can't wait to see how bad it's going to be when we get ACC teams.

Turner is ineffective. Obi can't kick. Bring in Portis and see if he can revive this team!

Prisbell, what was it you were saying about our O-line dominating their D-line?
Posted by: cbs | September 6, 2008 8:59 PM | Report abuse
Eric, how clueless is Portis that they're so afraid to play him in a game like this? Are they that set on building Turner's confidence?

Looks like a 3 ACC win team. Ralph can join me as a coordinator

Wow- Chris Cosh did a great job preparing the defense this week!!! Debbie Yow won't have to worry about adding more seats. And the new suites being built will look good sitting empty.
As an alum and season-ticket holder, I'm certainly not enthused about what I'm watching.

I feel disgusted to be a DC football fan right now. Skins and Terps both looked like high school teams this week. Just terrible.

Game plan looks like it was hope for a big play. Do not see why I would want to go to a game this season. Is RF mad at fans and going to punish them with losses?

Prisbell, are we getting out-schemed, out-athleted or what? How is MTSU able to get consistent pressure on Turner?
Can you ask Friedgen these things post-game?
Posted by: Eric | September 6, 2008 9:26 PM | Report abuse
Yes, and pls ask how MTSU's undersized D-line was able to dominate MD's O-line.
Posted by: cbs | September 6, 2008 9:29 PM | Report abuse
I think a lot of the pressure is coming on botched screens

Posted by: Jim Zorn | September 6, 2008 9:41 PM | Report abuse
so fridge calls a run play every single time portis is on the field, then somehow thinks the defense will be on their heels on the 4th and 6 play when portis is brought in? guy gets smothered in the backfield, just as predicted. sort of like how steffy played terible last week and couldnt complete a pass longer than 5 yards in his start, just as predicted.

I cant believe it....we have one of the fastest players in the country AND the son of the drummer from RATT and we still cant score

This is going to end up being the worst loss of Fat Ralph's tenure. I'm legitimately embarrassed to be a Terps fan right now. And what is infuriating me most at the moment is the fact that I'm more pissed about it than FR is on the sidelines. He's finished. Doesn't have the stones to be a big-time coach. It's become evident that Taffe and Blackney were the brains behind the success we had earlier in the decade.
Fire Friedgen.

This play calling is the worst, next week will be a**-kicking and more boos and "Ralph must go" chants It's 3rd and 16 bring in Portis for a 2 yard run.

Hey Eric -- could you please ask the Fat Man where the new offense is? This is absolutely no different than last year's mediocre attack.
The schemes are elementary and the passion is non-existent. To quote the great B.B. King, the thrill is gone.
I used to wonder why UMD couldn't keep the top-level HS talent that comes from the DC metro area. I wonder no longer. If I had half a modicum of big-time talent, I'd run as far away from Fat Ralph as I could.
Fire Friedgen.

Missed tackles, dropped passes, INTs... this was a top to bottom effort to lose.
Posted by: JTS | September 6, 2008 9:58 PM | Report abuse
Embarrassing isn't a strong enough word here...
I really only have a few comments:
1. Turner looked really, really bad.
2. Couldn't agree more about that quote on the defense. Cal and the rest of the ACC are gonna eat our pass D alive.
3. Please tell me that 3rd and 4 QB draw with Portis, followed up with the same play on 4th and 4, was a joke? Please, please, please.
I agree with 4-8. It's gonna be a long, long year. Perfect timing for the Byrd expansion... NOPE

I don't think I have ever seen defensive backs play as poorly. They never had an idea when the ball was coming.
Last week the offense looked just like last year's. This week it was a little different - it was worse than last year's.

Maybe this is a no brainer but...
Maybe call a few more pass plays for Josh?
If they can't stop a very mediocre MTSU offense, I shudder to think what will happen when they face a real offense in Cal.

Thanks Ralph for the bulletin-board material you provided MTSU this week.
Would you like to take that quote back about wanting to play someone good? LOL
"We must clean this house!"

Guess practice does matter after all doesn't it? Turner sucks. And you can't leave any defense on the field for that long without having them break down, not even in the NFL.
Posted by: umterp | September 6, 2008 10:23 PM | Report abuse
it is time for the fat man to go; he can't recruit and now he doesn't coach. i wonder if he is going to cry tonight.
Posted by: philly | September 6, 2008 10:23 PM | Report abuse
It bothers me more that Cosh will sit back all game and get nickle and dimed. He either has no confidence in his players, or he missed the last 10 years of football. Newsflash...read and react defenses went out over a decade ago. Speed, and MD has plenty of it, makes up for mistakes.
This is easily the most talented team in MD's history. Coaches need to put players in position to win. Whoever said that Taffe and Blackney were responsible for Fat Man's first 4 years, is right on.
Ralphie and Cosh coach to not lose, to not make mistakes. MTSU out coached MD. If Debbie can't find a frying pan large enough to accommodate Ralphie's ass, maybe someone can custom make one.
This is a disgraceful loss.

Posted by: JFRAZ | September 6, 2008 10:46 PM | Report abuse
maybe...just maybe Fridge was right for not naming Turner the starter at the beginning of the season. If you throw 3 ints to a Sun-Belt team, you don't deserve to be the starter!
Posted by: B Real | September 6, 2008 11:13 PM | Report abuse
Steffy still would have done worse. He threw two INTs against a team that would lose to MTSU by 3 touchdowns.
Posted by: Charles | September 6, 2008 11:16 PM | Report abuse
Don't make excuses for Turner. Steffy was an idiot because he didn't let the coaches know right away how bad his thumb was. Turner was very bad today, period. lets leave it at that.
Posted by: yuck | September 6, 2008 11:32 PM | Report abuse
So we go from having "three really good QB's" to having none. Steffy is out, Turner has been abducted by aliens, and Portis, what can you say about Portis, he is not allowed to throw. must be tearing it up in practice.....
"where did you go Scott McBrien, our nation turns it's lonely eyes to you."
Posted by: rick2412 | September 6, 2008 11:53 PM | Report abuse
Portis is not the best option, he is the only option! When you don't have an offensive line that can hold off a second rate, young, inexperiencd defence, at least Portis has some degree of excapability.
